[nysbirds-l] Turkey Vultures
This afternoon, while on a non-birding trip to Rocky Point, I came across 5 T.V's. on & over the sod field located in Wading River, at the intersection of Route 25 A & Hulse Landing Rd. Four of them were on the ground, clustered around a carcass (with only one actively feeding) while the fifth bird remained airborne. All of the birds seemed to be 1st year birds, their head color in various stages between gray/brown & red. [nysbirds-l] Turkey Vultures/ Riverhead, Suffolk County: A preliminary status report.
Tonight at 6:45 PM, I had 9 T.V's. flying low between the LIRR tracks at Ostrander Ave, and E. Main St., near the L.I. Aquarium/ Atlantis Marine World. This location is quite close to the roost that held up to 30 of this specie, before the 2-3 largest (of ~ 10 mature pine trees) were taken down, causing the birds to head out, and stay away...at least up until this spring. A short time after the "tree trim", I stopped to speak to the lady (Mary) whom I thought was the owner of the property, whose trees held the roosting T.V's. and to whom I must have spoken to a dozen times, without being told they belonged to her new neighbor I He must have been worried about the liability involved (the trees extending well over her detached garage) prompting him to remove the threat. Fast forwarding now to the middle of last week, I had a reason to be back on the same block and found 12 vultures roosting in the 2 largest, remaining pines. After getting no response from "Mary's" house, I knocked at her neighbor's door, and found her home. I explained my past and present interest in the birds, and how an influx of birders might effect her family's activities. She, of course, wanted to speak to her husband first, and then call me re: their wishes. To date, I haven't received her call, and therefore, was holding up on posting the particulars, until I do ! After not seeing any T.V's at the Riverhead roost for about a week now, and thinking they had moved on, I was quite surprised to see 7 flying at low altitudes near the roost at ~ 0750 Saturday. Although I couldn't stop to see how many might have returned, I did manage to see 2 more ~ an hour later atop the large chimney of the St Isadore's Elementary School on Marcy Ave, Riverhead. They have used this spot in past years to warm themselves, via the rising flue gases (products of combustion). I did have an opportunity to stop by the roost at ~ 1400, but did not find any vultures there. http://www.petercolenphotography.com/WinterWrens/South-Florida-1/27594871_f4hHTW#!i=2326570297=wrdBPXj I just came back from the Miami-Dade area in Florida. It was rare not to see Turkey Vultures in the sky at any time during the day. I was told that hundreds of them collected over the entrance to this state park several times a day and just flew. Many more were out of the frame of this photo. This was a social event. I was birding a racetrack on afternoon and in the back of a restaurant, I looked over a fence and saw 3 Turkey Vultures and 2 Cattle Egrets scrounging in a dumpster who quickly flew away. The wooden fence made it impossible to get a photo. [nysbirds-l] Turkey Vultures
According to my experience birding on Eastern Long Island,in the past Turkey Vultures have been fairly rare. However yesterday I saw a flock of 9 Vultures over the farm fields off Edwards Ave. in Calverton. I took several pictures as they circled around and moved gradually north. Do Turkey vultures usually fly directly north as they migrate, or do they occasionally stay a while, circle and hover, as these did, slowly working their way North? Just wondering if they might be staying on Long Island for a while. Thanks for your comments. Birding While Driving: Frequently in the last few weeks I've seen up to five turkey vultures soaring above Northern Blvd (25a) from approx the Roslyn Viaduct to NYIT. This morning there was one gliding over East Hills Chrysler Jeep (25a) and as I passed the old Pall Corp Building (next door) there were three sitting on the edge of the roof - one with wings spread and one harassing him/her. (Last summer I saw them all the time too. Most notably on the Nassau Museum grounds as I stood over looking the western "lawn" next to the museum, four silently glided around, coming in very low to the ground. It was really very cool.) Had a turkey vulture over Stony Brook University at mid-afternoon two days in a row this week. Eileen Keenan -Original Message- From: ROBERT ADAMO To: NY BIRDS Sent: Thu, Mar 29, 2012 3:05 pm Subject: [nysbirds-l] Turkey Vultures + On Monday evening (3/26) ~ 6:35 P.M., I had a lone T.V. flying low over downtown Riverhead, and again when we crossied paths, about 5 minutes later, a bit farther north. Thinking at the time it was late in the day for such a sighting, coupled with the prevailing reasoning that the T.V's seen during the day on eastern L.I. are probably "day trippers" from Connecticut (and as such, would have started their "return trip"earlier) I put it down as a probable migrant. On Wednesday morning at ~ 0840, I had the same species (individual ?) flying low at the latter of the 2 locations above. The time, day and location of this occurrence made me wonder if this sighting was that of an individual that had spent at least a few days & nights feeding & roosting here in the Riverhead area. Today I received an email from Tom Lambertson, a local birder, who lives in Flanders, and works at Brookhaven National Laboratory. All 3 Osprey nests that he monitors (2 near home and 1 at work) were late getting occupied this year, with dates of 3/26, 3/27 and 3/28, respectively. These quite late, considering they are normally on territory by St. Patrick's Day, or the day afterward. For the last couple of days, between 6 and 7 PM, he has also seen 10 - 12 T.V's flying ( south & east) of the intersection of Routes 105 and 24 (Flanders Rd.), Flanders. In addition, Tom mentioned seeing his FOS Eastern Kingbird at B.N.L., on 3/28. [nysbirds-l] Turkey Vultures Suffolk County
Early this afternoon 2 Turkey Vultures were seen soaring over Southaven County Park, Brookhaven, tending in a northerly direction. Rather early, as multiples usually not seen here by us until March. [nysbirds-l] Turkey Vultures on the move?
Yesterday around noon there was a Turkey Vulture flying low just west of Mattituck on Rt 58 and another one perched on a lamp post east of Mattituck. An American Kestrel dove at the junction of Northville Tpk and Rt. 58, I couldn't see whether it was a hit or a miss. I have seen a Kestrel at this junction several times. Re: [nysbirds-l] Turkey Vultures in Wading River
I saw 6 Turkey Vultures on Tuesday, around 11:45 am, all sitting on the guardrail down by the lighthouse in Montauk. It was amazing...of course, the one day I leave my camera at home. I wonder where they're headed next. Thursday evening at 7:30 PM my daughter excitedly called me into our yard to witness 6 Turkey Vultures soaring very low (just above the trees) over our property. They continued circling for several minutes and then set down in the trees along our driveway, apparently to roost. At 8 PM they were still present. I check at 6AM this morning and they had already departed. It was a truly impressive sight.
