I found two Gray Jays at Sabattis Bog today and heard a calling Black-backed
Woodpecker. I hiked the Leonard Pond Trail (in the rain) to check for Red

side of Parker Rd., a flock of 33 COMMON REDPOLLS flew by and perched along a
nearby hedgerow. I viewed the flock for about 5 minutes and eventually had to

this afternoon. They were located in the center median across from the
coast guard station, and allowed close approach while they fed on the pine
seeds. One male was in full breeding plumage.

Common redpolls continue at a friend's bird feeder in Stephentown, Rensselaer
County, NY. Two or three birds showed up a week or so ago and have increased in
number since then. Normally, the redpolls leave after their morning visit, but
during today's snowstorm, we counted at least 42 that

Clear, cold (18 to 32 degrees), calm winds
David Buckley and I hiked about 5.5 miles round trip at Massawepie Mire
today. On the drive from David's home in Piercefield, we found a flock of
~10 Common Redpolls feeding on
Had a pair of COMMON REDPOLLS on an early morning walk around Flax Pond this
morning. On Sunday morning I had three flyover WW CROSBILLS at the same
location.

foraging in the median across from the entrance to the Coast Guard
Station. They were accompanied by several Red-breasted Nuthatches.
Otherwise, a scarcity of birds. Someone reported having seen American

Shortly after 2 PM today, a flock of approximately 100 Common Redpolls
alighted briefly in the pines at the entrance to the campground, then
lifted up and departed to the east. Otherwise, things were very slow,

Hello All, While driving along the access road to Moriches Inlet this
morning Dick Belanger and I found a flock of 19 Common Redpoll. They swirled
around us, then set down in a line on some snow fence just 15 yards from his
jeep. Got to love them. We also had an American Pipit and 5 Horned

Redpolls to my nyjer feeder. Not a bad trade-off for having to shovel
again. First time I've ever had redpolls at my feeder.

While covering my area for the NYSOA January Waterfowl count this morning,
I encountered 4 COMMON REDPOLLS feeding among 10-12 American Goldfinches
at Bayard Cutting Arboretum. The flock was feeding on the "cones" in alders

Ten Common Redpolls arrived at our feeders this morning. Late
December-early January is the typical arrival time during irruptive years in
Long Lake. (During our winters in Potsdam, in the St. Lawrence Valley, the
arrival dates were earlier.)

This morning while driving through DeBruce (Sullivan County) I found a flock of
90+ Common Redpolls feeding in birch trees. Hopefully I will see some at my
feeders soon!
