[nysbirds-l] Greater White-fronted Goose, Randall's Island, New York County

2020-12-21 Thread David Barrett
I am seeing a Greater White-fronted Goose on the northeast ball fields of
Randall's Island, south of Field 31 with many Canada Geese. This goose was
initially observed by others yesterday and reported publicly today. Here is
a quick photo:

https://twitter.com/BirdCentralPark/status/1341107965609320449?s=19

This seems to be the first-ever documented occurrence of this species in
New York County.

[nysbirds-l] Greater White-fronted goose pehlam bay park

2019-12-05 Thread patrickhoran
There is a greater white-fronted goose in the Thomas Pell marsh now hunking
down for the night in a flock of Canada geese,Richard aracil spotted it and I
recieved a message shortly after from him.I patted the dogs on the head and
headed over to the pehlam bay draw bridge and was able to locate it in almost
total darkness,so my digiscop pics and video are horrible but good enough to
add too the i.d. of the goose.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Greater White Fronted Goose

2017-01-09 Thread Shaibal Mitra
It's been decades since people have debated the natural origins of Greater
White-fronted Geese in New York State, and a huge body of records has
accumulated, supporting the regular occurrence of Greenland-breeding
flavirostris on Long Island, and of tundra-breeding North American birds
upstate. Still, it's worth keeping an open mind.

To me, the Elda Lake bird looks like a typical flavirostris (decidedly orange
bill, dark plumage, very narrow white tail band, etc.), but my photos seem to
show that it is missing its left hallux:

https://flic.kr/p/R1SzcA

Clipping a hind toe is a common practice among keepers of captive waterfowl,
but losses of digits also occur naturally. To me it seems unlikely that this is
an escaped captive, but perhaps we need to evaluate the various relevant
probabilities--how many people keep Greenland White-fronts here, etc.

RE:[nysbirds-l] Greater White-fronted Goose flyover flock

2016-02-20 Thread Scott Kruitbosch
That would certainly be interesting to say the least! Thanks for sharing
the post, Anders. I checked out eBird quickly yesterday and saw that
multiple areas in OH and PA to the SW, S, and SE had counts into the
dozens, but I hadn't examined it in detail in terms of NY and figured
surely someone in the strong WNY birding community would have
infrequently picked up a flock.

Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties are severely under-birded, and many
more unique or rare sightings undoubtedly go unseen. I've entered it
into eBird.

[nysbirds-l] Greater White-fronted Goose flyover flock

2016-02-20 Thread Anders Peltomaa
Hi all,
I just came across a posting on Facebook from the Roger Tory Peterson
Institute in which they reported a sighting of 29 (yes 29!) GWFG on this
past Thursday. Here is a link to the RTPI website with the posting and the
amazing photographs by the observer and photographer Kim Sherwood.

http://rtpi.org/greater-white-fronted-geese/

This may likely be a new high count for NY State. On eBird the high count
is 9 made by Chris Wood and Jessie Barry on 10/29/2012 at Montezuma NWR.

good internet birding,

[nysbirds-l] Greater White Fronted Goose on Staten Island

2014-03-15 Thread isaac grant
I just realized that this never made it to NYSBIRDS. Some very good
waterfowl was seen today on Staten Island at Arbutus Pond. First Anthony
Ciancimino found a pair of Tundra Swans that were scared away by the
resident pair of Mute Swans before anyone else could get to see them. The
Mute Swans were chasing every bird on the pond, including the Canada Geese.
Damn bully Mute Swans!

Shortly after arriving and missing the swans, Seth Wollney found a Greater
White Fronted Goose on the pond with a flock of Canada Geese.

Also present were 8 Common Mergansers, 2 Redheads, 2 Green-winged Teal,
many Ring-necked Ducks and Hooded Mergansers.

The pond is at the intersection of Arbutus Road and Nicolosi Drive. And is
directly across the street from Raritan Bay. For those that don't know,
this is just north of Wolfes Pond Park and the turn off from Arbutus Road
is off of Hylan Blvd. This place is checked often by local birders and as
far as I know has never produced any of the birds seen today. Not sure
what was going on, but I am not complaining...

I should also mention that this pond is surrounded by large mansions and I
am not sure that the local residents will be too kind to birders.

[nysbirds-l] Greater White-Fronted Goose, Yaphank, Long Island

2013-01-07 Thread Peter Priolo
Today I found what I believe to be the Greater White-Fronted previously
reported by Derek Rogers. It had been on and off at Hard's Lake of
Southaven County Park. Today I observed the bird from another Suffolk
County Park, Prosser Pines, which is near the headwaters of Hard's
Lake/Carman's River on Yaphank Middle Island Road. This park is adjacent to
a large inaccessible private sod field. Hiking through the park however is
encouraged and one can get a good view of foraging geese from the NE
boundary of the preserve. The pine forest is small and it is an easy hike.
It was foraging among ~300 Canada Geese. Beautiful bird out of the water!

Alex Pirko and I hiked a few miles from Van Cortlandt Park Bronx, into
Westchester in search of a Greater White-fronted that Alex had seen yesterday.
We found the bird at Tibbets Park(near the lake), where it provided excellent
views. We think this is our Van Cortlandt Park bird that just moved further
north. Good luck if you try for it.

Some additional information on the location. The Goose was hanging around at
the Northern end of Tibbetts Brook Park, right near the area that has a bunch
of kiddie pools and a water slide.
Good and responsible birding!

Subject: Greater White-fronted Goose (Westchester County)...

Good and responsible birding!

[nysbirds-l] Greater White-fronted Goose, Hauppauge, NY

2012-01-15 Thread Glenn Quinn
At 1:30PM today (01/15), there was an immature Greater White-fronted Goose at
the Hauppauge High School (Suffolk County). It is currently feeding with about
150 Canada Geese on the soccer/lacrosse fields bordering route 111 (Townline
Road) and Lincoln Blvd. Entrance to the high school is from Lincoln Blvd.

Right about here:

40.824949, -73.202108

There is no white around the bill of this bird and very little, if any, black
barring on the underparts.

There are usually many Canada Geese on nearby Stump/Mill Pond inside
Blydenburgh County Park, which I'm assuming was iced over today. If it stays,
it might also be found there.

[nysbirds-l] Greater White-fronted Goose @ Van Courtlandt Park Bronx + Northern Shrike in Brooklyn (YES)...

2011-12-17 Thread Andrew Baksh
The Van Courtlandt Park* Greater White-fronted Goose*, which has not been
seen for a few weeks was found this morning in a flock of about 500 Canada
Geese North East of the Parade Grounds. Over the past few weeks during our
Saturday walks at Van Courtlandt Park, we had searched for this bird with
no luck, so it was nice to see that it was still around. Maybe it will
make it to count week.

Following the walk I headed into Brooklyn to look for the *Northern Shrike*,
which I searched for and missed yesterday. After about an hour and a half
of searching I found the target bird hunting low along tree line behind the
camp grounds. Please note that this bird was also seen yesterday (not by
me), near the runway where the model airplanes are flown, indicating that
it is using a nice bit of territory to forage. I was able to get some
photos of both the Greater White-fronted and Northern Shrike, which I will
post later on my blog.

[nysbirds-l] Greater White Fronted Goose - St. Johns Pond, Suffolk

2011-12-15 Thread Derek Rogers
The reported goose continues along the east side (Suffolk County side) of St.
Johns Pond. It was among 70 CAGO's, all were in the water. Best viewed from the
church which is behind the fish hatchery on the west side of the pond. Scope
preferred but not necessary to pick out the goose among the flock.

[nysbirds-l] Greater White-fronted Goose at Van Cortlandt Park

2011-11-25 Thread gjm2044
The GWFG was on the lake at Van Cortlandt Park at about 12:30 this afternoon.
Later the bird was grazing on the 14th hole of the golf course and not paying
the golfers any mind. Also had two Snowy Geese with the flock of Canada Geese
on the golf course and three pairs of Hooded Merganzers.

Got some good photos of the GWFG:

[nysbirds-l] Greater White-fronted Goose in the Bronx [Yes] + Eared Grebe in Queens [Yes]...

2011-11-12 Thread Andrew Baksh
While leading a walk at Van Courtlandt Park in the Bronx, my group were
treated to the *Greater White-fronted Goose* in the fenced off area on the
Parade Grounds. This is the area right across from the Ranger Station. We
wondered if this could be the same GFWG that we had last year at Van
Courtlandt
Park(click
on the link to see a photo and post from that date). If you try for
the GFWG and do not see it on the parade ground, try the Van Courtlandt
lake or the Golf Course.

Much later back in Queens, I had the continuing *Eared Grebe* on the
Bayside of the West Pond in the company of about 12 Horned Grebes. A
*Red-necked
Grebe*, was reported in the log book earlier in the week, but I could not
find that bird. The West Pond was dotted with Ruddy Ducks along with both
species of Scaups and a smattering of other waterfowl including a few
Common Goldeneyes. No sign of the American Bittern or the Red-head Ducks.
I did not get to bird the East Pond but I heard that the *Eurasian Wigeon*,
is still showing on the North End of the pond.
