Robert DeCandido noticed a MISSISSIPPI KITE flying over Tupelo Meadow in
the Central Park Ramble and quickly disappearing off to the east at 9:13
a.m. today. Deborah Allen photographed it and I posted it to Manhattan Bird

About an hour ago (11:45 a.m.), as I was about to turn onto Sound Avenue from
Hallock State Park, a Mississippi Kite flew south with purpose across Sound
Avenue at about fifty feet in height. I turned right onto Sound Avenue, and
then left onto Herricks Lane, and caught up with the bird again as

Just saw Mississippi Kite at Bronx Zoo's ParkingLot A, Westbound. Pointed
wings, smooth dusky coloration and upper wing with pale ashy trailing
edge. Gobsmacked.

Amazingly for the second time in 3 years I just had an adult Mississippi Kite
fly over my house. It was traveling north west so keep an eye to the sky if you
are in Brooklyn.

Yesterday evening (Tuesday) Tom Brown saw a Mississippi Kite at Highland Mills,

A Mississippi Kite flew over big John's pond at Jamaica bay Wildlife refuge
heading west about 5 minutes ago. Last reports from this on the west pond were
that it turned north and was maybe somewhere in the vicinity if Spring Creek
heading NNW.

Rob Jett just reported a MIKI from greenwood cemetery in Brooklyn. He reported
the bird was very low over the treetops heading north and was a similar plumage
to the bird photographed yesterday in the same location.
I've been standing vigil on prospect park south west and have not seen anything

Resurrection, soaring fairly high above the road leading to the overlook and
feeding on the wing (cicadas of course).

Hi All,
I did not see any reports yet today so I thought I would just mention that
the Mississippi Kite continued near the pond at Cemetery of the
Resurrection around 230pm. An adult Bald Eagle also did a quick flyby, as
well as a distant Black Vulture.

I am passing on a message from Patrick Baglee who reported that the Staten
Island Mississippi Kite was actively feeding this morning between 07.50 and
08.20 to the south of the pond in the Cemetery, mainly over the area of
equipment storage. That is before the rains came.
For those
Rich Guthrie reports that a MISSISSIPPI KITE is present for a second day at
the Asbury-Kaatsban Firehouse, which Google Maps says is at 1977 Old Kings
Highway in Saugerties. The Kite has been seen perched in dead trees south
of the firehouse and has apparently been present since yesterday morning.
Seen near the same area in the Cemetery of the Resurrection as described
by Anthony. Observed with Anthony Ciancimino, Eric Miller, Jeff Ritter,
Bobby Veltri and Tom Duluski.

of the Resurrection near the town of Pleasant Plains on the south shore or
Staten Island (Richmond Co.).
If you are coming via Brooklyn, take the S.I. Expressway to the West Shore
Expressway South (440) and get off
For those who don't know, this cemetery is on Staten Island. It is the place
that had all the cave swallows last fall.

I was thinking of going up for the Mississippi Kites at Sterling Forest on
Saturday and was wondering if the birds were seen today?
Also, if any other interesting species (such as Golden-winged Warbler and
Black-billed Cuckoo) were seen today in the vicinity, and their exact locations.

This is off topic, but for the benefit of some birders -- those that took
interest in a dragonfly that I pointed out at the Mississippi Kite spot the
day I was there (May 31). I had called it an Illinois River Cruiser, which
made sense as that's the only River Cruiser so far recorded in New York

Both Mississippi Kites put on quite a show this afternoon at Sterling Forest
Nature Center.
There was also a singing Cerulean Warbler a little down the road at the Laurel
Pond (?) parking area.
Bald Eagle and Raven were seen from the bridge at Narrowsburg in Sullivan Co
early this AM.

What I assume was the male was present at around 3:45pm today
(Friday), perching on the dead tree across the road from the supposed
nest area, soaring, and carrying nesting material. Lost sight of him
when he entered the denser trees next to the parking lot.

afternoon. Apparently, the female has not been seen in the past couple of days
and people suspect that she may be in the nest. BTW, the best time to see the
bird (based on the behavior of the male Kite) is early in the morni

Joe Giunta, Debbie Martin and I (Sy Schiff) arrived at 8:30 to find a dozen
cars in the parking lot and the MISSISSIPPI KITE clearly visible, by eye, in a
large dead tree. As we approached the birding group, after a few quick nods,we
were escorted to th

I finally headed up to Sterling Forest after work to lookfor the Mississippi
Kites. I arrived at 5:15 PM to a couple of birders but nokites. At 5:49 one
soared in from the north and circled overhead for about 10minutes before coming
down and land
Thanks to a prompt call from Ken McDermott, I was able to get down to Sterling
Forest Visitor Center in Orange County this morning to see the continuing

An adult Mississippi Kite just made two brief appearances over the royal oak
section of Clove Lakes Park on Staten Island. Saw it once flying north and
another time flying south so it may be sticking around.
Also had a very late Hermit Thrush in the same general area.

over the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge North Marsh @ approximately 11:25 a.m.
Other observers included Fritz Brock from PA. The bird was heading towards

After waiting for about one hour between 5 and 6 PM today (June 20th), I saw

Mapletown Road in the Town of Root, Montgomery County. The bird remained for
a long time and seemed unperturbed by my presence as I sat and photographe

I found the bird at the second corner of Donato as you come from
Mapleton. It was perched in a dead tree. It flew after about one
minute, disappearing over the tree line. It was about 11:30 am.

Just received a call from Peter Schoenberger that at least one of the kites
had returned to the area in the Town of Root where a pair spent last breeding
season. Peter observed the bird from Donato Road (DeLorme pg. 65 B 4-5)

We're at or near the time when young should be fledging from a
Mississippi Kite nest in Montgomery Co., if the pair observed there
all summer is in fact breeding. This will provide the best
opportunity to confirm what would be the first known successful
nesting of the species in NY St
