The first Great Egret arrived, along with the recent Tree Swallows. A diminished Scaup group continues in the channel along with Belted Kingfisher and Ruby-crowned Kinglet on land. The Osprey pair continues at the nest site, copulating. Egg laying should be soon. The Peregrine nest box now has four (4) eggs. Both nests viewed via cam in real time. [nysbirds-l] Oceanside MNSA, Nassau County 10 Black-bellied Whistling Ducks
Hi All! Right as I was walking the trail back to leave mmsa at closing time I saw a flock of black bellied whistling ducks land just behind and to the left of the the osprey nest. I imagine the birds were at the golf course and something must have spooked them and they all flew into the Marine Nature Center. Watching the flock of 10 Birds with their bright beaks flying together was quite a sight. The birds appeared to be getting sleepy and started lying low in the grass soon after. It's a good thing I was just kind of surveying the area looking for salt marsh and seaside sparrows as that had me looking in the right direction when the Ducks came in -Kev -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birding.aba.org/maillist/NY01 Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

Marine Nature Study Area, Oceanside 21 Sep Finally a few migrants today, namely: several PALM WARBLERS and several SAVANNAH SPARROWS plus an EASTERN PHOEBE . A MARSH WREN that showed up yesterday and still here today is also probably a migrant along with a cooperative GREEN HERON. Shorebirds still not moving in; Forster's Terns lingering. The RED CANA LILIES continue to attract RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS. In a space of 17 minutes (digital cameras time stamp the images), I managed to take 60 photos with my point and shoot super zoom, a third presentable for ID and a few OK (Wings blurred in all cases). I spent the afternoon at the OMNSA, spending time with the specialty birds and other usual suspects. I heard a Clapper Rail and saw a Seaside Sparrow late in the day just before the trails closed. Many birds (Osprey, Barn and Tree Swallows, RW Blackbirds) are feeding young, and there were numerous Willets, terns, gulls, egrets, night-herons, and ibis. Other birds of note include Peregrine Falcon, two Semipalmated Sandpipers, and a Greater Yellowlegs. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S24160524 Cheers! -Tim H -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

Marine Nature Study Area 19 May Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) walked around on a foggy day. The west side of the pond harbored the birds associated with a marsh environment; namely, 2 CLAPPED RAILS, 2 MARSH WRENS and 2 singing SEASIDE SPARROWS in the phragmites along the trail. Saltmarsh Sparrows have not arrived yet. A few hundred shorebirds of the 6 commoner species gave us some things to do.. There was no breeze and the "no-see-ums" were very annoying. Bring bug-juice. [nysbirds-l] Oceanside Preserve
Marine Nature Study Area, Oceanside 22 August The pools to the east of the pond have been full of waders and Laughing Gulls recently. Today, among the many egrets, there were a few "white" LITTLE BLUE HERONS and a TRICOLORED HERON. Included were a half dozen species of common shorebirds. Two marsh sparrows popped up in an area that had both SALTMARSH and SEASIDE SPARROWS this week, but neither stayed long enough to ID positively. A pair of cooperative YELLOW WARBLERS continues around the path. [nysbirds-l] Oceanside Preserve
Marine Nature Study Area, Oceanside 22 August The pools to the east of the pond have been full of waders and Laughing Gulls recently. Today, among the many egrets, there were a few white LITTLE BLUE HERONS and a TRICOLORED HERON. Included were a half dozen species of common shorebirds. Two marsh sparrows popped up in an area that had both SALTMARSH and SEASIDE SPARROWS this week, but neither stayed long enough to ID positively. A pair of cooperative YELLOW WARBLERS continues around the path. During the week, the marsh has been host to CLAPPER RAILS and a pair of ROYAL TERNS fishing in the pond, neither were seen this morning. [nysbirds-l] Oceanside Marine Nature Study Area, Nassau County/Help needed
Dear Birders, With permission of the Listowner I am forwarding a petition being sent around attempting to speed up the restoration of the MNSA in Oceanside, Long Island. Like so many coastal areas, this site was heavily damaged by Hurricane Sandy. The location is a favorite of birders looking to view Seaside and Saltmarsh Sparrows from the network of boardwalks and berm trails, many of which are still damaged today. A few lucky birders were able to see a Fork-tailed Flycatcher here in the not too distant past! You can read more about the site and it's educational mission at this link. They are about half way to their goal for number of signatures. http://www.change.org/petitions/preserve-the-town-of-hempstead-s-marine-nature-study-area Thank you for your interest, Sean Sime Brooklyn, NY (Oceanside High School Alum!) -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Oceanside Preserve
Marine Nature Study Area, Oceanside, NY: 23 May A WILLOW FLYCATCHER was over by the golf course. Clearly seen by scope, but not identifiable. Fortunately, it was singing. We flushed a CLAPPER RAIL and heard several others. Saltmarsh Sparrows have been seen calling from the marsh, however, not this morning. No resident Seaside Sparrows or Marsh Wrens yet. Last Sunday, the Nickerson Beach colony hosted 300+ BLACK SKIMMERS and 100+ COMMON TERNS. Numbers still building Not much evidence of active breeding, but there were several AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER chicks among the several dozen adults. First post in a while. Recovering from a bad back and just getting out and about. [nysbirds-l] Oceanside Preserve
Marine Nature Study Area, 21 Oct, Bright sunny morning. A walk around the site produced SONG, SAVANNAH, SWAMP and WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS on the path. In the marsh, three white herons fed together in a small tidal pool. They presented three sizes, a GREAT EGRET, a crouched SNOWY EGRET and an erect imm. LITTLE BLUE HERON. Although the two smaller waterfowl are approx. the same size, feeding posture makes the Little Blue appear taller and hence larger. Nice contrast to see the three white species together. The dune area produced a Veery that I didn't quite see clearly. Returning later for a better look, I found the bird plus a rather late WOOD THRUSH.
