[nysbirds-l] Yellow-breasted Chat Hudson Yards

2021-12-16 Thread Alan Drogin
The Yellow-breasted Chat reported last week at Hudson Yards has stuck around to
make it on the NYC CBC bird count week. However, did not find last week's
reported Ovenbird or Wood Thrush (interestingly, I had a Wood Thrush in Hudson
Yards until the first week of December 2019).

Like the past few winters of birding Hudson Yards, I also found a female
Eastern Towhee, but no sign of the hybrid male I sighted late last winter yet.

Happy Holidays Birding,

Alan Drogin

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-breasted Chat - Mill Pond, Bellmore, Nassau County

2019-12-01 Thread Timothy Healy
The Yellow-breasted Chat recently sighted at Mill Pond Park in Bellmore
continues today, frequenting the brushy tangles along the trail on the western
shore of the lake. Starting in the southwest corner near Stella’s restaurant
and walking up the path will put you in the right area. It was alternating
between active feeding and extended bouts of roosting in dense cover during the
observation period. A Blue-winged Teal hen continues near the western shore of
the lake as well, and the young Common Gallinule present for the past few weeks
is presumably still nearby as well.

Cheers!

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-breasted chat, philly vireo etc Central Park North End

2019-09-13 Thread AA Fawkes
Still out birding, but thought I should report that Alex Hale and I just
had a (very skulky) yellow-breasted chat at the southwest corner of
wildflower meadow in Central Park, as well as Philadelphia and white-eyed
vireos on the great hill. Loads of birds around after the north winds last
night, though not much active migration visible from the park.
Happy Birding!

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-breasted Chat, Jones Beach, Nassau County

I just found a Yellow-breasted Chat in the brush north of the road and west of
the Coast Guard Station at Jones Beach. It was along the western edge of a
somewhat open bowl, observed at these coordinates: (40.5886626,-73.5587467).
The bird appeared while I was pishing for warblers, dropping out of sight after
investigating the noise.

Re:[nysbirds-l] Yellow-breasted Chat at JBWR

2017-04-08 Thread Steve Walter
For those thinking of trying tomorrow, it should be noted that the Chat
started ranging over a wider area after spending the morning in the area
noted below. I last saw it at the start of the West Pond trail, under the
large cedar on the right (next to the lower entrance to the south garden).
And from the time I arrived at JBWR, it wasn't quite so cooperative. I guess
it remembered that it's a Chat. I managed a couple of usable pictures, one
of them now on http://stevewalternature.com/ for anyone that wants to take a
look.

I got my first look at the restored West Pond. I was told earlier in the day
that it was essentially a mud flat and would require rain to fill up. What I
saw was a full pond, with ducks in it. I'm not sure what's going on with
that. Maybe old information I was given?

Also noted a Common Raven and possibly the largest number of Boat-tailed
Grackles ever on the refuge grounds (large numbers have been noted over the
years flying to or from a roost site). What else? Oh yea, I had
Yellow-rumped Warbler and Golden-crowned Kinglets. I think I saw that
mentioned in the subject line of recent post, so I guess that's something
you're supposed to report.

Steve Walter

Bayside, NY

Update: the bird is moving south along the west edge of the parking lot at

the edge of the woods, towards the visitor center

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-breasted Chat at Maintenance Field, Central Park

2016-09-10 Thread Tim Healy
Getting the word out on a chase-worthy species through as many outlets as
possible. A Yellow-breasted Chat has been seen at least twice in the past hour
and a half on the western edge of Central Park's Maintenance Field. It has been
spotted feeding on berries, somewhat surprisingly in the upper two-thirds of
the tree. Views have been brief but diagnostic.

Decent migrant activity even for the middle of a hot day! Plenty of other birds
to be seen and heard.

Cheers!

A Yellow-breasted Chat was singing at Goethals Bridge Pond this morning, near
the observation platform off of Forest Ave.

Shorebird numbers there were modest and utterly dominated by Semipalmated

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-breasted Chat, Dutchess County

2015-06-06 Thread John Kent
At least one Yellow-breasted Chat is present this morning at Hopeland Sanctuary
in Staatsburg. At least one, and maybe two, have been reported over the past
two days. From the parking area on Old Post Road, cross the bridge, turn right
on the trail into the field, and look along the trail to the right. It has been
near bluebird boxes #50 & 53.

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-breasted Chat and more

2013-01-05 Thread Cesar Castillo

Hello all,

Joined the Queens County bird club at Point lookout today with leader John
Collins (THANKS JOHN!!!).  We had common eider, blank and white-winged scoter,
horned grebe and more usual suspects.  We had purple sandpipers, none of them
landed by us, only fly bys.  Also most of the group had a swift look at a
razorbill, but I missed that one, darn!!  It was right at the last jetty on the
beach.  No harlequins.

Jones beach yielded Horned larks and goldfinches feeding on pine seeds.
Otherwise quiet around lunch time.

After that I went solo and decided to explore Jamaica Bay in search of the
Yellow-Breasted Chat reported on Ebird on Thursday.
I got  yellow rumped warbler
a bufflehead female on the west pond

carolina wren
grey catbird
a cedar waxwing
hairy woodpecker and
yellow-breasted chat in the South Garden just as I had given up on it.  A nice
life bird which I missed last year.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Yellow-breasted Chat continues in Bryant Park

2011-11-02 Thread Felipe Pimentel
I saw the bird several times between 1:30PM and 4:30PM. It was seen in
different spots around the northeastern part of the park (both upper and lower
levels). It tended to spend most of the time inside the bushes and plants in
that area with occasional exposures of several minutes. It was also seen (by
Matthew) in the grass area on 5 Ave/42 Street. This is a picture of the bird.

Following up on the wanderings of the Yellow-breasted Chat. I saw the bird
at ~12:20p. The bird was in the lawn/garden along 5th Ave. south of the
southern lion. At 1:45p a photographer reported seeing it on the upper
level near the north edge and just east of the library.

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-breasted Chat & other sightings in Bryant Park

2011-10-26 Thread gabriel willow
On this morning's NYC Audubon Bryant Park Bird Walk (Wed. 10/26 from 8-9 AM) we
had some wonderful sightings and a daring attempted rescue!
We started in the NW corner of the park, where we saw Ovenbirds, Catbirds, a
Hermit Thrush, and White-throated Sparrows.  We then worked our way along the
hedgerow at the Northern edge of the emerging skating rink.  There's a lot of
ongoing construction, so it can be hard to get around, but this path should be
open.  We spotted a couple of Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, lots more
White-throated Sparrows, a Brown Thrasher, a late Black-and-white Warbler,
several Common Yellowthroats, and I caught a brief glimpse of a larger bird
with a yellow throat pecking at a bagel with several sparrows... could it be, a
Yellow-breasted Chat?  My gut said yes, but it was gone before I could get my
binoculars on it.
Just then, I spotted what appeared to be a small bird in one of the London
plane trees, hanging from one foot and struggling.  It was a female Blackpoll
Warbler, with her foot somehow tangled in the twigs.  I went to find help, some
way to get her down.  With the assistance of Bryant Park staff, we got a tall
ladder and an arborist with a very long pruning clippers, and some workmen held
a blanket as a net to catch the unfortunate warbler as we snipped the twig.
The plan was a success, we caught the bird and disentangled her foot (I
couldn't see exactly how it got caught).  We warmed her up and placed her in a
paper bag, to take to a rehabilitator, but unfortunately she died en route,
from shock or exhaustion.  Who knows how long she had been hanging there?
Meanwhile, the Yellow-breasted Chat reappeared, and my instincts proved
correct!  It was seen by several observers and was last seen hopping on the
blue astro-turf at the north edge of the rink.
About an hour ago in Prospect Park, I encountered a Vesper Sparrow with a flock
of Chipping Sparrows and Juncos at the Eastern edge of the Long Meadow near the
Upper Pool.I also sighted a Swainson's Thrush in the Ravine.
Quite a day!

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-breasted Chat in Central Park

2010-12-04 Thread Felipe Pimentel
Around noon (12-1PM) we saw a Yellow-breasted Chat on the parking area next to
the Boat House. The bird moved between the parking area next to the East Drive
and the grass area between the East Drive and the path near the playground.
Yesterday, it was spotted closer to the building area (the restaurant).

To locate the area using Goggle Maps, these are the coordinates.

40.775837, -73.967654

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-breasted Chat at Robert Moses State Park (Suffolk Co.)

2009-09-19 Thread Ken Feustel
A slow morning at RMSP was enlivened by the brief appearance of a
Yellow-breasted Chat at the volleyball courts on the east side of RMSP
Field 2. Specifically, the bird was observed in the brushy area north
of the sand roadway that leads to the volleyball courts.
