One should never enter the fields on Indiana Road. The last time I was there
there were birders from a number of states trampling all of the fields, much to
the dismay (right fully so) of the local farmers. So much so that there was
talk of putting up a locked entrance gate.

There was a RED-NECKED GREBE at Old Field Point in Setauket this morning. Also

My report from West Meadow today included a Broad-winged Hawk, which I have
learned would be improbably early. Luckily I was able to grab photos of all the
birds today and the one previously ID'd as BW was in fact a RS...so, 4 RSHAs on
the day. No BWs. Still plenty of sunshine.

I found the bird at the second corner of Donato as you come from
Mapleton. It was perched in a dead tree. It flew after about one
minute, disappearing over the tree line. It was about 11:30 am.

when we noticed a larger bird way out. We were amazed
to find a Whimbrel working the water chestnut. The bird moved around a
bit, but stayed in the area. It was still there as it was getting dark.

In addition to the good birding on Mission Land Rd on Saturday, on
Turtle Cove Rd we found an American Golden Plover and 6 Sanderlings.

The bird is currently being seen along the fenceline and in the pasture at the
top of the slope above (northwest) of the ranch buildings

As of 11:20am the lovely Wheatear remains in the close vicinity of Deep Hollow
Ranch. It has been seen both in the high pasture to the northwest of the barn
and, more typically, in the low pastures just north of the barn where it was
initially discovered.

Ryan makes a good point about the owners. I asked permission to bird
the farm. They were very nice about it. I don't know if that applies
to an army of birders. I asked at the nursery that is located on
Pitcher La., that runs parallel to Rockefeller La .just north of the
fields.

A ROYAL TERN flew past Old Field Point in Setauket this morning at about 8:30.
At least a dozen LAUGHING GULLS were still present, as a well as a GREAT
CORMORANT and a COMMON MERGANSER mixed in with a flock of RB Mergs.

The bird roosted almost motionless in the center of the pond for the better
part of a half hour. I managed a few lousy spread-winged shots.

A RED-NECKED GREBE was at Old Field Point in Setauket this afternoon at about
3:30.
A GREEN HERON was a the Mill Pond in Setauket shortly before that.
