[nysbirds-l] Clay colored sparrow croton point

2023-05-09 Thread Trachlar
Around 400 pm today Karalyn Lamb found a clay colored sparrow at CPP. it was on
the ball field by entrance in the NW corner near far bench; close to fence line
associating with four adult white crowned sparrows and two savannah sparrows

There was also a low flyover above the landfill of seven glossy ibis this am. A
nice bird for the river side of the county.

[nysbirds-l] Clay-colored Sparrow Jones beat west end 2, Nassau county

2022-10-29 Thread kevin rogers
Hi All,
Just had a clay colored Sparrow as I walked by the bicycle path entrance about
150 yards past the entrance/toll booth at west end 2. On same side of the road
as the sand spit, not the ocean side...Also 4 or 5 marbled godwits are present
on the spit, and 2 surf scoters are in close to the boat basin, currently
feeding.
Kind Regards-Kev
Just saw the clay colored again, now just before the bike path...same area...

At about noon today 5/10/22 I had a Clay-colored sparrow foraging with many
Chipping Sparrows at Owls Head Park in Brooklyn, in the grass below open
birch groves in the southwestern quadrant of the park. When I left at 12:30
several birders were observing it.

[nysbirds-l] Clay-colored Sparrow Flushing Meadows Queens NY

2015-12-22 Thread Andrew Baksh
Dear Peeps,

I managed to shoot some video today while observing the Clay-colored
Sparrow at Flushing Meadow Park in Queens, which I wanted to share for
anyone interested.

Today's rain, coupled with a very active bird made it quite difficult to
get decent video scoping footage, so don't be too hard on me about the
production. I removed portions of the various clips where it was too blurry
or the bird was absent and slowed the frames down to give the viewer time
to study the field marks of the bird.

Many thanks to Steve Schellenger who was a good spotter in helping me track
the bird when shooting with my scope and iPhone.

The video is publicly accessible at https://flic.kr/p/CpitGj

Best,

Andrew

RE: [nysbirds-l] Clay-colored Sparrow, Queens

2015-10-21 Thread Steve Walter
Clay-colored Sparrow still at this location today. Between lunch and after work
visits, I’ve been able to find it on four straight trips. It will take five, at
least, to get a good picture. Cooperation only goes so far. Also a Lincoln’s
Sparrow there today.

Since I know someone that will ask, butterflies were limited to Cabbage Whites
and an Orange Sulphur that seems to have escaped a Phoebe foray.

Just another Clay-colored Sparrow – is it even worth reporting anymore? But
this one is away from the barrier beach, so a bit different. It was seen a
little while ago in the field across from Oakland Lake, part of the Alley Pond
Park chain. At least at the time, it wasn’t associating with the many Chipping
or Savannah or any other sparrows.

[nysbirds-l] Clay-colored Sparrow in Brooklyn

2015-09-21 Thread Rob Jett
This morning Sandy Paci and Kathy Toomey spotted a Clay-colored Sparrow in
Brooklyn's Green-Wood Cemetery. Joshua Malbin and I were able to eventually
track it down again at about 2pm. The bird came down to drink and bathe inside
the mostly drained Dell Water pond. There is a trickle of water at the
southeast corner of the pond and, if one is patient, there is a nice mix of
birds coming down to that spot. In addition to the clay-colored we had several
resident species, 13 species of warbler, phoebe, Blue-headed Vireo, Red-eyed
Vireo, Swainson's Thrush, Scarlet Tanager, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Indigo
Bunting, Baltimore Oriole and Chipping Sparrow … all coming to the "waterfall"!

Good birding,

Rob

[nysbirds-l] Clay-colored Sparrow Captree SP

2015-08-28 Thread Shaibal Mitra
Pete Morris and I found a Clay-colored Sparrow along the southeast corner of
the northeast lot at Captree SP, Suffolk, LI.

The bird struck me as not quite typical in a couple of ways and the date is
slightly early for a southbound bird on LI, but it clearly showed a nice
auricular patch edge in black below, completely pale lores, a brown rump, and
nice buffy breast and flanks.

Some photos can be seen at the end of this album:

[nysbirds-l] Clay-colored Sparrow in Brooklyn

2014-12-15 Thread Rob Jett
I received this second hand report that I thought I should share with the list.

A Clay-colored Sparrow was observed in Prospect Park yesterday near the
Maryland Monument and Wellhouse Drive. Klemens Gasser posted some photos on his
Flickr page here:

https://m.flickr.com/#/photos/gasserberlin/15836779838/

It's getting a bit late in the year for this species, so it would be a very
nice addition to the Brooklyn CBC if it stays until Saturday. Here's more
details from Klemens email to me:

"It was at Maryland monument where the fenced in bushy area is next to the
street and later around the cut down tree on peninsula Meadow. With a first
winter CHSP, other CHSPs and DEJU."

Good birding,

Rob

[nysbirds-l] Clay-colored Sparrow Captree SP, Suffolk, LI

2014-05-09 Thread Shaibal Mitra
Rare on Long Island in spring, a Clay-colored Sparrow was an unexpected find at
Captree SP, Suffolk, LI this morning.

Initially, it fed along the grassy margins of the northern edge of the main
lot, between the bait and tackle shop east of the concession building and the
hedge occupied by the cat colony:

https://picasaweb.google.com/109808209543611018404/LongIslandMiscellany2014#6011481797723496418

Later, it flew north over the bay, then arced back to the left and appeared to
land a little bit west of the concession building.

As mentioned by Tom F, it was a very dynamic morning in this part of the state,
with many Neotropical migrants moving around in the rain and fog.

[nysbirds-l] Clay-colored Sparrow - Forest Lawn - Buffalo

2014-05-02 Thread joetf1973
I had a Clay-colored Sparrow at Forest Lawn Cemetery earlier this afternoon.
The bird was seen briefly near Mirror Lake. There is a large weeping willow
across the road from the Birge Memorial - on the lake side of the road (the
Birge Memorial is the round structure of columns near the NE corner of Mirror
Lake). There are many Chipping Sparrows, and at least one Field Sparrow in this
area - you may have to look through a lot of other sparrows. This bird is more
gray-brown, and the median stripe is very distinct.

Dennis Gralak had many warblers earlier - I think I was able to re-find most,
including: Yellow, Palm, Yellow-rumped, Black-and-white, Nashville,
Black-throated Blue.

I believe he had Blue-headed and Warbling Vireos as well. I may have heard Pine
Siskins, but I am not positive, and I did not see any in the short time I was
there.

[nysbirds-l] Clay Colored Sparrow at marine Park

2013-10-03 Thread Isaac Grant
As facing the nature center go down the path on your left. Cross over the
bridge. Make first left and follow fence line. When the fence ends, make a left
( it is the first left you can make ) and then continue to go left. You will
see a ball field on your left. Bird was along the perimeter of the field in a
mixed flock of sparrows.

[nysbirds-l] Clay-colored Sparrow in Montauk

2012-10-05 Thread Anthony Collerton
This morning at Theodore Roosevelt C.P. in the 'pocket grasslands' (dry
ponds full of seeding sedges) near the HQ building. There also were 14
Bobolinks, 3 Indigo Buntings and an assortment of common sparrows.

Still a few Cory's Shearwaters visible from Camp Hero this morning - along
with the usual 'goat rodeo' of hundreds of fishing boats chasing back and
for after a few False Albacore. Lots of Phoebes, Palm Warblers and
Yellow-rumped Warblers moving this morning, but couldn't pick up anything
unusual in the time I had.

[nysbirds-l] Clay-colored Sparrow in the pumpkin patch, Wading River

2011-10-16 Thread Sara Burch
We went pumpkin picking at the Lewin Farm Pumpkin Patch on 25A just past Sound
Ave near Wading River, Long Island and were treated with a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW
hanging out with a bunch of Yellow-rumped Warblers who were hawking near the
wooded fenceline on the eastern side of the field. There were lots of Tree
Sparrows flying around above the pumpkin patch until a MERLIN came flying
overhead and cleared the air. An unexpected and surprising nice couple of finds
for a site we weren't even planning on birding!

[nysbirds-l] Clay-colored Sparrow tripleheader

2011-10-16 Thread John Gluth
A day spent birding (9:15-3:30) along the barrier beach strip from
Jones Beach west end to Captree State Park did not turn up any vagrant
kingbirds of any species, the continuing strong SW wind making for tough
birding in general. But some good birds were to be had. A CLAY-COLORED
SPARROW was making use of the "hedge" in front of the Coast Guard station
at west end, and a BLUE GROSBEAK was nearby, seen briefly atop some vines
growing on the station's western fence, then flying over to a nearby poplar
tree before continuing westward. Little of note was found during visits to
Tobay, East Gilgo, Overlook Beach, and Oak Beach Road, heading east along
Ocean Parkway. The result was the same at Robert Moses State Park, until
I encountered another 2 CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS, seen together along the
entrance road to the park administration building. This was around 3:00.
An E. Wood Pewee was also in the vicinity. I finished up an Captree Island,
where 2 of the 3 immature Little Blue Herons seen by Michael McBrien
Saturday were still present.

[nysbirds-l] Clay-colored Sparrow, etc - Jones Beach West End 10/9

2009-10-09 Thread Brendan Fogarty
A Clay-colored Sparrow was again present at the West End 2 parking lot's
central exit, on the "island" I have described in recent emails. Few other
birds were present there except a White-crowned Sparrow and singles of
Black-throated Blue and Blackpoll Warbler.

The Clay-colored was the only Spizella in its area, although dozens of Chipping
Sparrows were present at the Coast Guard Station. Highlights there included a
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker flyby, a  Red-eyed Vireo, a Lincoln's Sparrow, and
an Indigo Bunting.

In nonpasserine news, a massive flock of cormorants (over 600 Double-crested)
and gulls was following some school of fish in the inlet, as visible from the
Boat Basin, and an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull was loafing in the West End 2
parking lot.

Have a nice weekend everyone,

[nysbirds-l] Clay-Colored Sparrow at Cedar Beach (Suffolk Co.)

2009-09-30 Thread Ken Feustel
A Clay-colored Sparrow was present this morning at the northwest
corner of the Cedar Beach (Town of Babylon) parking lot. The bird
favored a row of stored lifeguard stands and was in the company of
Song and House Sparrows. Otherwise, there were few birds at the Cedar
Beach Marina and Cedar Overlook Beach.

[nysbirds-l] Clay-colored Sparrow - Jones Beach West End, 9/28

2009-09-28 Thread Brendan Fogarty
This evening a nonbreeding Clay-colored Sparrow quite literally replaced the
female Dickcissel (from Friday) on the West End lot 2 "island." At one point
the small sparrow flock frequenting the island took off for the shelter of the
shrubs immediately around the West End 2 pavillion. Again, for those unfamiliar
with the location, throwing the following stream of numbers into Google's map
feature will reveal the exact location:

40.585172,-73.560607

Despite strong onshore winds, no notable pelagics were seen except one Royal
Tern. A young White-crowned Sparrow continued in the Coast Guard Station
hedgerow, and a male Hooded Warbler briefly joined the sparrows on the West End
parking lot 2 island.

Photos of this week's Dickcissel and Clay-colored Sparrow can be found here:

2009-09-15 Thread Ken Feustel
A Clay-colored Sparrow was discovered on the west side of the RMSP
Field 2 picnic area this morning, where it was observed feeding on the
panic grass with a White-throated Sparrow (FOS for us) and Song
Sparrows. Other birds observed included Warbling, Red-eyed, and White-
eyed Vireo's, as well as our FOS Yellow-rumped Warbler. Good numbers
of Northern Flickers and Merlins (always an entertaining mix) were
also moving down the barrier beach.
