Re: [nysbirds-l] Croton train station and Croton Point Park
The two Caspian Terns were still there around 2:30. 41.189078, -73.879924 Half an hour later a Merlin joined the usual two Kestrels moving around the cap, perching on the little poles. I got a horrible photo of it from great distance. Around 4:30 the very tame adult male (I think) Red-tail again put in a sustained appearance on the west side of the cap near the main path and the maintenance buildings. It's incredible how tame this bird is. I saw several hikers get within twenty feet of it as it perched on a pole right off the man path. One little girl asked "is it real"? On the Hudson low tide, I saw 22 great blue heron behind the train station and out past the trestle. A high count for me. One bald eagle flyover and a kingfisher as well. L. Despite high water there were 3 Bonaparte's gulls swirling in water behind croton train station about 6:30 this a.m., moving towards but none close to full breeding plumage. Noticeably smaller than ubiquitous ring billed gulls. L. A brief stop at low tide this am found at croton train station (green heron - 2; great blue - 3, one yellow warbler and one marsh wren calling and of course osprey) ---and at Croton Landing a BC night heron. Only shorebird (many at both locations) was killdeer. L. [nysbirds-l] Croton train station -- common tern
Low tide this a.m. Highlights were a green heron, 5 great blue heron, two common mergansers (young) (I understand they bred in croton river this year); and on spit in bay a common tern, also 2 bonaparte's gulls and some unidentifiable peeps. [nysbirds-l] Croton Train Station: Exact Wheatear Location
Here are some more specific directions to the exact location of the Wheatear for those not familiar with the location. These directions start from the entrance to the Parking lot (so you will have to find your own way to get to that location). First, you turn left into the Croton/Harmon Train Station parking lot (this turn is right before the entrance road and sign to Croton Point Park and on the same street as the Franzoso Contracting building. The parking lot is fairly large and there is a marsh with fragmites and mud flats on the left hand side of the parking lot. Keep driving strait through the parking lot until you cant drive anymore. There is a small parking area at the very end of the train station parking lot Past the large brown shack that is a storage building for salt. The storage building cant be missed (it is on the parking lot, not across the train tracks!) If you can see inside the salt storage building, you are in the right area of the parking lot. there should be a green porta potty there and a large pile of gravel pushed to the edge of the parking lot. You should also be right next to the steal support bridge for the train tracks. The bird frequents the large pile of gravel. it also tends to fly onto the train tracks that can be seen easily through the fence on the right side of the parking lot (right: facing the support bridge) The bird may also be sitting on the fence, wooden guard rail, or in the trees closest to the marsh on the left side of this small parking lot area. if you cant find the bird at first, keep looking, it will appear within 10 minutes, providing it is still there. If you are struggling finding the bird, check the area on the other side of the salt storage building (the area of the parking lot where you can't see into the storage shack, but I doubt it will be in that area). I hope this helps!
