RE: [ebirdsnyc] Fwd: [nysbirds-l] Kumlien's/Thayer's Gull on CP Resevoir Sunday - NO Tuesday

2014-02-04 Thread Anders Peltomaa
Hi all,
I looked for Anya's Kumlien/Thayer's gull today around noon, but it was not
to be found. The snow we received yesterday has received the loafing area
for gulls and numbers were down. All the birds present on the reservoir
were hanging around a small patch of open water around the fountain.

The only surprise was a Great Blue Heron that visited for a few minutes.

good winter birding,

RE: [ebirdsnyc] Fwd: [nysbirds-l] Kumlien's/Thayer's Gull on CP Resevoir Sunday

2014-02-04 Thread Steve Walter
I just did a quick, but pertinent update to my current running feature on
adult Iceland Gull variation, to add a link to a page I posted a year ago.
The first three pictures on that page are of an unusually dark immature
Iceland type gull at Jones Beach - possibly what the Central Park bird would
look like with better photos.

Apologies for posting late. An immature white-winged gull, possibly a
Thayer's, was on the reservoir Sunday, along with several hundred other
gulls and a definite Kumlien's. There has been quite a bit of debate on
various facebook groups, and I would welcome more opinions. I'm going to try
to re-find the bird tomorrow to get better pictures, as the ones I've got
are distant and overexposed.

2014-02-04 Thread Hugh McGuinness
Anya,

I agree that this is a good candidate for Thayer's b/c of the strong
crescents on the primary tips, the strong tail band and the overall color.
I would love to be able to see the bill, head shape and size in comparison
to Herring Gull to be sure.

[nysbirds-l] Kumlien's/Thayer's Gull on CP Resevoir Sunday

2014-02-03 Thread AA Fawkes
Apologies for posting late. An immature white-winged gull, possibly a
Thayer's, was on the reservoir Sunday, along with several hundred other
gulls and a definite Kumlien's. There has been quite a bit of debate on
various facebook groups, and I would welcome more opinions. I'm going to
try to re-find the bird tomorrow to get better pictures, as the ones I've
got are distant and overexposed.
