[nysbirds-l] Red-necked Grebes
There's now a Red-necked Grebe in the West Marina at Point Lookout / Lido Beach in Nassau County. This is just west of the terminus of the Loop Parkway. The RNG on Alley Pond in Queens continues. Two Pine Warblers there - most likely overwintering ones. [nysbirds-l] Red-necked Grebes on East End
On Saturday Sue and I had seven Red-necked Grebes at Montauk Pt. and three at Shinnecock Inlet. Besides a female King Eider at the Point there was little else but waterfowl. Passerines, with the exception of American Robin, were largely missing. Also notably missing were blackbirds (we had one Red-winged Blackbird), which in most years we would expect in number by the end of February. [nysbirds-l] Red-necked Grebes at Robert Moses SP and Oak Beach (Suffolk, LI)
It seems like there has been a sizeable movement of Red-necked Grebes into Long Island waters over the past couple of days. This morning, before the snow made viewing impossible, Tim Dunn and I watched 16 Red-necked Grebes fly west past Robert Moses field 2 (in a 45 minute period late morning), in small groups up to 3. Earlier in the morning we also found 6 at nearby Oak Beach, 2 on the water and 4 flying high west together. A very pleasing total for a small area. It will be interesting to see totals from other areas as this develops. [nysbirds-l] Red-necked Grebes at Point Lookout (Nassau Co., LI)
Yesterday morning at 10 a.m. there were three Red-necked Grebes at Point Lookout, along with two immature male Com. Eiders, a group of Lesser Scaup evidently frozen out of their usual mainland lakes, and the usual winter waterfowl. No Harlequin Ducks were observed there at that hour (they are often on the Jones Beach side of the inlet). [nysbirds-l] Red-necked Grebes - Argyle Lake, Babylon (Suffolk)
Everyone has probably had their fill of Red-necked Grebe reports by now, sorry if that is the case. There are 2 this afternoon on Argyle Lake in Babylon that are absolute stunners. They ranged widely around the lake, occasionally together but came really close at times allowing for great views. I also had my first (two) Tree Swallows of the year foraging over the lake. [nysbirds-l] Red-necked Grebes in East Rockaway
It might be a big deal in another winter, but I'll report it anyway. There were two Red-necked Grebes on the Mill River, by the East Rockaway (Nassau) train station this afternoon. Last week's Canvasbacks were gone, but two female Common Goldeneyes remain. Also out of place this far upriver are continuing Red-breasted Mergansers, but no Common Mergansers yet. Unlike my last couple of RN Grebe encounters, these (one more than the other) were active and put on a show - diving and bringing up prey (looked like Grass Shrimp), snaking along the water's surface, wing flapping, and even calling. All this at often close range, in good light, on calm water - a dream setup. Maybe that's what it was. I also dreamt that it was sunny and warm, with just a gentle breeze. [nysbirds-l] Red-necked Grebes
There have been a lot of recent reports of Red-necked Grebes in locations where they're not seen often, like rivers on Long Island. I read that the Great lakes are 75% frozen over, so this is probably driving them south. A similar event happened maybe 10 -15 years ago when they showed up in many spots where there was open water while the Great Lakes were in a deep freeze. So anywhere there's open water could be a good spot to look - could be an addition to many county and local lists, assuming you can find open water -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
