[nysbirds-l] Roseate Spoonbill, willow Pond, hewlett bay park

2023-09-03 Thread Pat Aitken
A roseate spoonbill was found last night by Michael Redstone and has just
been refound.

Anyone chasing this bird should park at the hewlett high school and walk
over to the pond. There is no street parking.

Unfortunately, Shu Swamp will be closed this week due to intense storm damage
and dangerous trails.  There is no parking in the area.  It may open back up
this weekend.

If you go, understand that this is a very narrow two lane road. There is no
parking (or shoulder) anywhere in the Mill Neck the area. You could park at
Bailey Arboretum and walk east on Feeks (becomes Cleft at the little causeway).
Be careful - there are no sidewalks and no shoulder on this curvy steep road
and cars come zipping along.Second possibility is to park at Shu Swamp and then
walk north along that road till you get to Cleft and make a left. Again, be
careful for the same above reasons.
Good luck!Sue Herbst

Re: [nysbirds-l] Roseate Spoonbill Wappingers Falls, Dutchess Co.

2021-07-25 Thread Donna Schulman
There are two eBird reports (with photos) of a Roseate Spoonbill seen for a
minute this morning in Laurel Hollow, Nassau County, close to the Suffolk
County border. Let's hope it can be relocated!

By my count, this is the 6th NYS Spoonbill for the summer, if we assume the
Wallkill and Wappingers Falls/Poughkeepsie birds are two different birds.

[nysbirds-l] Roseate Spoonbill and Wood Stork Montezuma NWR, Seneca County

2021-07-21 Thread Wasilco, Mike R (DEC)
Both birds were showing well around lunchtime today. The Spoonbill was perched
out in open on a branch over the Seneca River about 200m west of the Rte 89
bridge on north side of river with some cormorants. The wood stork was
actively feeding with some egrets in a pool along the near side of Knox
Marcellus Marsh about 2/3 south in the marsh. It was near the island of
cattail with a pool of open water to its south.

[nysbirds-l] Roseate Spoonbill Orange County, NY

2021-07-15 Thread sophiesaid
I viewed/photographed a Roseate Spoonbill (flyover only) at the Wallkill River
NWR (NY)last night shortly after 8:00pm. The entire flight was over the New
York portion of the refuge only. The Spoonbill flew west to northeast and over
the treeline (Liberty Corners Road) and was not relocated.I (and others) spent
many hours trying unsuccessfully to relocate the Roseate Spoonbill today.
I am curious if the other N.Y. Spoonbills were seen at their respective N.Y.
spots last night.

[nysbirds-l] Roseate Spoonbill in NY YES. 6pm Aug 2.

2018-08-02 Thread ArieGilbert
Bob Proniewich and I went to Wallkill nwr today in the morning and observed the
spoonbill in its usual spot on the west trail in the cut south of the water
control and water depth meter.
Much as we hoped, when it flew a few times it never ventured anywhere near to
the NY border.
We left to get food after a while and then went on a fruitless search for the
previously reported anhinga. No luck.
We returned to wallkill after we concluded the anhinga was not gettable and
after the rain stopped we went back to get another look.
We were joined by Bill Weissman and we brought him to the area and located the
bird for him.
By around 6pm we decided to depart, and unbeknownst to us it took off north
some time after we did. Bill called me but I was out of cell phone range.
When we emerged from tree covered section of the trail near the berm, I spotted
a large bird flying south from near oil city road. It was a spoonbill, and my
immediate thought was that it was a second bird!!
We watched it fly south and we made haste to go back to where we had it before
and determine if it was the bird or another.
Bill confirmed it had flown north, and while it was not a second bird Bob and
I were elated at our good fortune.

The same could be said for the Anhinga up in Sullivan County yesterday, despite
that bird staying around for only a few hours.

[nysbirds-l] Roseate Spoonbill (Barely Extralimital), Liberty Marsh, Sussex NJ/Orange NY

2018-07-24 Thread Timothy Healy
A juvenile Roseate Spoonbill is currently visible at Wallkill River NWR’s
Liberty Marsh off Oil City Road, where it has been reported for several days.
The New York/New Jersey border runs directly through the wetlands. So far it
seems that the bird has remained on, and is only visible from, the Jersey side
of the loop trail. I’m guessing that the perceived “noncountability” of this
individual for NY state listers is a contributing factor in its absence from
the listserv. All the same, I’m sure there are plenty of people who might be
interested in chasing a local occurrence of this species. It may yet decide to
check out the northern portion of the marsh, too.

Cheers!
