Re: [nysbirds-l] Brown booby

2019-08-04 Thread David Chernack
I commented on their Instagram post to ask for more details and got this
response:

"It landed right after we struck sail late afternoon (8/3) and stayed right
before we docked, then flew off towards storm king mountain."

No other details however. Also this serves a s a good reminder to keep your
eyes peeled on social media or other non-traditional places for rarities, I
don't think the bird would have been reported otherwise!

Montauk...)

Re: [ebirdsnyc] Re: [nysbirds-l] Brown Booby continues (Montauk, Suffolk County) 15 October

2017-10-16 Thread Karen Fung
FYI yesterday the booby was frequenting the south end of Lake Montauk and was
perched on the mast of a boat with a dark blue hull. Views were from the beach
at the end of South Lake Drive. When it's roosting at this location one can
actually obtain decent photos with a telephoto lens since the bird is much
closer to shore than when it's on the Maui or the green marker and one is
looking from Star Island Road.

Photos from yesterday are in my eBird checklist here:

Re: [nysbirds-l] Brown Booby is deceased

2017-06-20 Thread Gabriel Willow
There were also several deceased Great Shearwaters on the beach at Nickerson. I
considered grabbing some for you, but was taking public transit and decided
against traveling on the LIRR with a smelly shearwater corpse in a bag. Might
raise questions...

You should make little self-addressed bird body bags to pass around, then I
could've just popped it in the mail.

Is there any indication as to what might have led to her weakened state?
Will any effort be made to determine that further?

Is there any indication as to what might have led to her weakened state?
Will any effort be made to determine that further?

Re: [nysbirds-l] Brown Booby is deceased

2017-06-18 Thread Tim Healy
Sad to hear, and unfortunately not surprising based on her behavior yesterday.
Is there any chance that the body can be collected safely? Going to a museum or
research center would be the best possible end to her story at this point. If
the roping for the colony and the nesting birds are obstacles, perhaps the
local researchers could be alerted so they could gather the remains.

Cheers,

As a minor follow-up, looking over my pictures at home it appears that the
bird has an injury to its left eye, which may explain why it is so lost.

Apologies to the list.

The album defaults to private. It is now public.

That should make the photos easier to see!

Arie managed to snap a few quick photos to further firm the I.D. I
will get them up on my Flickr site later this evening and share with

Stay alert for this bird. Scan the tops of buoys in and around the
