Saw a set of chains on offer some years ago (in Bike Nashbar, I think).
Short lengths of chain run over the tire from one loop of cable (think
clothesline) to the other.
You just slip them over the knobbies when they're deflated and then pump it
up!
This would be no good for 700c though.
