That's a very good point, and I'm happy to answer specific questions about
how we run Evergreen for a consortium.

2019-02-18 Thread Rogan Hamby
Just a a quick follow up from what Andrea said, if your assignment is
specifically to talk to a vendor (which it sounds like) look carefully at
that page and you may want to talk to some community members about vendors
first to make sure you good a good representative one. Even better I'd
recommend talking to multiple. Unlike a proprietary ILS vendors for
Evergreen don't offer a uniform slate of services. One may only offer
development while another may offer hosting and another may offer those and
training and migration services.

full disclaimer: I work for Equinox, one of said providers on that page

Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Anyone willing to answer some general questions about Evergreen ILS?

2019-02-18 Thread Andrea Buntz Neiman
Hi Nita,

If it's relevant to your assignment, I have a hair to split: Evergreen is
not in itself a vendor -- it is a software project. There are vendors who
provide support, development, migration, etc. for Evergreen libraries but
there is no one single Evergreen vendor in the same way there are for
proprietary products like Polaris (III) or Symphony (SirsiDynix), etc.

A current list of Evergreen service providers is here:
https://wiki.evergreen-ils.org/doku.php?id=faqs:evergreen_companies

Additionally there are groups which -- while not vendors in the traditional
sense -- serve in a vendor capacity for their respective consortia, such as
the Georgia Public Library Service does for Georgia PINES.

That said, I work for one of the Evergreen service providers and I will
answer questions from that perspective if you need information.

I'm willing to provide answers. It might make sense to just post your
questions to the mailing list, that way the people who are most familiar
with particular aspects of Evergreen can answer those questions--for
example, there might be libraries that use the built-in self-check
functionality who can answer questions about that, while some of the
developers can provide detailed answers about API compatibility, etc

Nita,

I recommend just sending your questions to this list. That way you will
get the benefit of answers from multiple people, and other people will
benefit from seeing those answers as well.

Cheers,
Jason
