take a look at jpackage.org, it's used bu RH, MDK and SUSE and it has
been started with cross distro compatibility in mind.

I didn't -- probably because I don't ``Do Java'' much beyond installing the
java interface for OpenPKG.org and similar things. My Real Work(tm) tends
to be done in python or perl.
