For the price of one RAS system, I can build several cheapo systems and cluster
them. So what if one of those cheapo systems dies? Throw it out of the window,
it's just one of man
That's actually a really good idea, I didn't know Xen worked on itanium2

I think this is a bit nuts, but if you really want to go down that path...
You might want to look at Xen. The hypervisor has been ported to IA64 and
Solaris has been ported to the hypervisor. There would still be a huge
amount of work to do, but running Xen instead of bare metal might make the

Do you have the hardware?
Do you have the expertise to create the low level stuff from the kernel?

Eh-hem! Sun just made its first mainframe in history, the M-series.
IBM, that's a crooked deal if I ever saw one: a bigwig head honcho from IBM
sales gets a job in my firm, and suddenly
Amen to that. Add Hierarchical Storage
I thought it ironic that the Linux world is spending this decade adding
the "business hardening" that we put into Unix in the late 80s and early

Oh, absolutely! SPARC and POWER are way too overpriced, which is just total and
complete BS, not to mention that it angers the hell out of customers like me!
And then Sun wonders WHY Solaris and SPARC can't pick up cri

Why not start on it and see where it leads??

Come on. That's such a small niche market. We're talking obscure here. I should
know, obscure hardware like that (for example the rx Integrity, and

It would be a possibility once OpenSolaris gains

They have already actually, I'm not sure how much progress was made,
but the project was scrapped. If Sun's willing to lawyer a little bit

be a possibility...
Sun types, likelyhood of this happening?

I would be very surprised if Sun put any effort into porting Solaris to
Itanium. This doesn't prevent anyone else from trying though.

Would that be cool? Why, yes it would!
Would it be a justifiable return on investment? No.
Here's the deal:
who's running IA64? Only two firms, sgi and hp.
hp's servers are WAY TOO EXPENSIVE to buy j
Is anyone other than myself interested in seeing an IA64/Itanium port
of OpenSolaris?
My reasoning is that Solaris already runs on two of the 4 major
enterprise architectures (SPARC & x86/amd64) and a port to a third is
making strides recently ( I'm referring to the ppc32 port ).
