Yes, that's right. It's all up to discussion and I'm glad you mentioned that.
"Orchestration" seems now a very cool popular word in the community and lots of
discussions are now going on about it, mostly meaning Heat mission and design.
However, when we started this initiative we found word "orchestration" very
suitable for what we were planning with respect to task processing. I believe
we'll come to a non-confusing terminology while discussing all the details with
the community.

Thanks, very valuable note.

Cool, I think Convection was one of the most interesting idea to come
out of the last summit, and it's great to see folks start to implement it.

That said, can we please, please, please not invent a *third* meaning of
"orchestration"? The proposal, as I understand it, is Workflow as a
Service, so let's call it that. The fact that orchestration uses a
workflow does not make them the same thing. OpenStack already has an
Orchestration program, calling Mistral a "task scheduling and
orchestration service" just adds confusion.

Zane.

Joshua, as far as renaming the original document I would suggest we keep it as

far. We now have a link from launchpad name to Convection proposal so one
shouldn't be confused about what is what.

Re: [openstack-dev] [Mistral] Announcing a new task scheduling and orchestration service for OpenStack

2013-10-14 Thread Joshua Harlow
So from my understanding of the whole situation.

Convection doesn't exist (at the moment), and I think mistral will be an
implementation of what u call convection.

Its planned to be along the lines of convection, in fact I think we should
move https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Convection to
https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/MistralDesign (or something similar?).

Convection was planned to use taskflow to provide the underlying workflow
engine (taskflow is targeted for more than just this usage btw, since its
a generic library/concept).

I for one think it will be very neat to see where mistral ends up :)

Hi Clint,

This is done in collaboration with Joshua Harlow and the task flow team who
come up with the original proposal. We had a hangout session where we
defined a project scope and its relationship with task flow library.

We cant use name Convection as this is a trademark owned by Microsoft. We
saw the naming problems with Quantum, so we decided to pick up a name which
is not associated with any IT company.

Thanks
Georgy

[openstack-dev] [Mistral] Announcing a new task scheduling and orchestration service for OpenStack

2013-10-14 Thread Renat Akhmerov
Hi OpenStackers,

I am proud to announce the official launch of the Mistral project. At Mirantis
we have a team to start contributing to the project right away. We invite
anybody interested in task service & state management to join the initiative.

Mistral is a new OpenStack service designed for task flow control, scheduling,
and execution. The project will implement Convection proposal
(https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Convection) and provide an API and
domain-specific language that enables users to manage tasks and their
dependencies, and to define workflows, triggers, and events. The service will
provide the ability to schedule tasks, as well as to define and manage external
sources of events to act as task execution triggers.

The project will allow integration with the existing task flow library. Mistral
will initially expose task flow library functionality through an API by
providing a domain-specific language for describing task flow concepts. Going
forward there is an intention to extend DSL to provide a support for additional
concepts, like external events or scheduling rules.

The project page can be found at https://launchpad.net/Mistral.

We will be holding weekly meetings on Mondays at 16:00 UTC on
#openstack-meeting at Freenode. If you have any questions or would like to
contribute, you can find us on #openstack-mistral.
