This has been discussed for about a year and a half before we finally had the OSLO_PACKAGE_VERSION to play with, when this was designed a few years ago. I'm now very happy about the way PBR does things, and wouldn't like it to change anything. Currently, what I do in Debian is (from the debian/rules file included from openstak-pkg-tools): DEBVERS ?= $(shell dpkg-parsechangelog | sed -n -e 's/^Version: //p') VERSION ?= $(shell echo '$(DEBVERS)' | sed -e 's/^[[:digit:]]*://' -e 's/[-].*//') export OSLO_PACKAGE_VERSION=$(VERSION) You may not be familiar with dpkg-parsechangelog, so let me explain.
