Re: [openstack-dev] People of OpenStack (and their IRC nicks)

2014-12-10 Thread Matthew Gilliard
So, are we agreed that http://www.openstack.org/community/members/ is
the authoritative place for IRC lookups? In which case, I'll take the
old content out of https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/People and leave a
message directing people where to look.

I don't have the imagination to use anything other than my real name
on IRC but for people who do, should we try to encourage putting the
IRC nick in the gerrit name?

Often times I find myself in need of going the other direction — which IRC nick
goes to which person. Does anyone know how to do that with the Foundation

Thanks,

I don't think there's a lookup for that (might be worth logging a
feature request) but generally I rely on using the /whois command to
ask the IRC network for details on a particular nick and look at the
realname returned with it. I would encourage people to make sure
their IRC clients are configured to set that metadata to something
useful unless they really prefer to interact entirely pseudonymously
there (that's of course a legitimate preference too).

That's hard to enforce. A better way to solve this would be to link
directly gerrit IDs to openstack.org profile URL but I have no idea how
that would work. Gerrit seems only to show full name and email address
as a fly-over, when you hover on the reviewer/owner name in the UI.

This may be possible with a little javascript hackery in gerrit - I'll
see what I can do there.

I suppose a Javascript overlay to place REST query calls to the
member system might be an option down the road, but there will be
opposition to that as long as that system is not maintained by the
Infra team. Also, keep in mind that it's possible to have a Gerrit
account without having a Foundation account (though once Gerrit's
authenticating via openstackid.org that should also be tractable).

I re-noticed that the free form projects involved field in doesn't show up on
the personal wiki page. Some weird people like me do more other than normal
stuff. It would be nice to add that free form field, so others know what us

OpenStack is not really closely related to Launchpad. At the moment
we use its OpenID provider and its bug tracker, both of which the
community is actively in the process of moving off of (to
openstackid.org and storyboard.openstack.org respectively).

We already have a solution for tracking the contributor-IRC

is in there already:
