Re: [openstack-dev] [gantt] Scheduler sessions at the summit

2014-10-24 Thread Dugger, Donald D
(I hijacked this thread to save the context but changed the subject so more
people might read it.)

Looks like we have a scheduler specific session on Thurs. at 11:00AM for 90
min. so we can use that for working out some of the specific scheduler changes
we want to do (e.g. the split for sure).

On the Nova summit etherpad:

https://etherpad.openstack.org/p/kilo-nova-summit-topics

there is a scheduler section but it's not very cross-project focused. I would
like a cross project session on Tues. so we can get requirements from other
projects on what they need from a common scheduler. I don't know that I have
specifics that I can put down on an etherpad yet, I'm hoping to get that info
from other projects. Specifically, I think:

1) Cinder
2) Containers
3) Neutron
4) Ceilometer
5) Heat

are specific projects that have scheduling requirements (either to use the
scheduler or provide input to it) that they need and it would be really good to
find out exactly what they need. My suggestion would be an etherpad with a big
title `Requirements' on top and sections for each of those projects would be
enough to get us started.

PS: Note that Sylvain and I are both on vacation next week so we'll have to
miss the Gantt meeting. It would be great if you could lead the meeting Jay,
otherwise we'll just meet up at the summit.

The regular meeting time is Tuesdays at 15:00 UTC/11am EST:

https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Meetings#Gantt_.28Scheduler.29_team_meeting

Generally, we don't do slides for design summit sessions -- we use etherpads
instead and the sessions are discussions, not presentations.

Next week's meeting we can and should create etherpads for the cross-project
session(s) that we will get allocated for Gantt topics.

I'd prefer we had much of that done by the time the summit rolls around,
thus the focus on the various blueprints that involve the resource
tracker and scheduler. Please do review these all:

resource object models: https://review.openstack.org/#/c/127609/
request spec: https://review.openstack.org/#/c/127610/
select_destinations(): https://review.openstack.org/#/c/127612/
detach service from compute: https://review.openstack.org/#/c/126895/
isolate scheduler db: https://review.openstack.org/#/c/89893/

Note that the last one I have proposed to break down into further more
specific blueprints that cover the aggregate and instance group DB calls
separately...

My guess is that we will indeed have the Gantt session on Tuesday, as
there is quite a bit of interest in it. The remainder of the TC members
are voting today on those cross-project sessions and ttx will take it
from there.

As I mentioned in the previous response, I would greatly prefer if the
Gantt cross-project session was actually NOT a we want XYZ from the
scheduler session. I'd prefer to have an etherpad already containing
all those requirements from people before the summit and use the summit
time to discuss prioritization and implementation/design proposals for
actually getting the work done.

Sure, I can do that, no problem. Me and Paul will ponder the vast
expanse of time and space together and then try to unclutter the
resource tracker. :)

Re: [openstack-dev] [gantt] Scheduler sessions at the summit

2014-10-24 Thread Dugger, Donald D
Jay-

Your faith in the ability of everyone to get concrete ideas down before the
summit is a joy to behold - I'm a little more cynical :-) I think it'll happen
in Paris.

1) Gantt specific work. Your list of BPs is great, if we can come to an
implementation plan for those on Thurs. I will be ecstatic.

2) Replies to this thread on cross project requirements would be wonderful.
Let's see what we can get.
