[Openstack-doc-core] I18n core proposal

2017-09-19 Thread Alexandra Settle
Hi team,

I know this is a little unorthodox based off our current process, but after the
PTG I was looking at our reviews/commits and the openstack-manuals repo now has
a *lot* of i18n patches that are highly relevant to Frank Kloeker (eumel8), the
new i18n PTL.

I wonder how you would all feel about proposing Frank to be a core for the
openstack-manuals team, representative of i18n?

Thoughts?

Re: [Openstack-doc-core] [openstack-docs] Core review stats

2017-08-07 Thread Alexandra Settle
Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your input regarding core reviews last week. For the month of
August we have sadly lost Olena and Olga – two of our strong contributors who
have done a lot to improve documentation. Also, sadly, I have not heard from
Tom Fifield regarding his position as OpenStack manuals core. I have emailed
him twice in two months regarding his interest in the position to receive no
response.

I assume that Tom is busy at the moment, and has other commitments that take
higher priority – which is completely understandable. As of today, I will
remove Tom from the core list, unless he reaches out to me in which case I am
more than happy to chat :)

I thank Tom, Olga, and Olena for their hard work and dedication to the team
over the last few years, and am sure our team will continue to work with them
in the wider community.

Thanks,

Alex

Cosidering my current loading level at work, I am sorry to say that I would

[Openstack-doc-core] [openstack-doc-core] Core team review - July

2017-07-03 Thread Alexandra Settle
Hi core team,

Due to last month’s change to using Stackalytics for the review stats, I am
choosing to continue this trend so we have some consistency. However, I will
send out an email shortly to decide on what review stats we use in the future.

Here's the core reviewer stats for this month[1]:

Current cores not appearing in any stats:

  *   Lana Brindley
  *   Brian Moss
  *   Joseph Robinson
  *   Darren Chan
  *   Maria Zlatkova
  *   Olena Logvinova
  *   Olga Gusarenko
  *   Tom Fifield

This is a first-time appearance for most. However, I have spoken to Joseph and
Darren regarding their contributions and I believe they are choosing to step
down. Lana and Brian however intend to continue with their reviews. I will
email and discuss the potential for staying core. I will also email Maria,
Olena, Olga, and Tom about their interest on staying on. Right now, we need all
the core(s) we can get, and we truly need people to step up if they can provide
the time and expertise.

Current non-cores appearing in stats:

  * Petr Kovar (All 3 columns)
  * Bruce Benjamin (All 3 columns)
  *   Melissaml (All 3 columns)
  * Ian Choi (All 3 columns)
  * Akihiro Motoki (30 days and contributions)
  * Ildiko Vancsa (30 days and contributions)

I have reached out to Bruce and Melissa on several occasions. Melissa has
contacted me back and is interested in becoming core. I have advised her to
introduce herself on the ML, as she is not a strong presence on IRC, and read
up on the responsibilities of being a core. I still have not heard from Bruce.

I would like to promote Petr to becoming core. Petr has been around since the
Mitaka[2] release, and has recently stepped up with his reviews and commits to
help us out with our migration. He is also intending to step forward to become
our release manager for the Ocata cycle.

This month’s big thanks go to Doug Hellmann who has been tirelessly helping
orchestrate the documentation migration. Thank you, Doug!

My recommendation for April is:

Drop: Joseph Robinson, and Darren Chan
Add: Petr Kovar

Yay or nay?

Thanks,
Alex

Hi core team,

Since the Dawn Of Time (I dunno when, sometime around July 2016) we’ve been
using the Russell Bryant statistics to keep an eye on our core reviews.
However, today I was simply unable to access the site and nobody else can
either.

Bummer, that generated results from the reviewstats tool that I want to use to
automate reports on cross-repo stats. Have you investigated any further on the
plan there?

That’s unfortunate! ☹ No, I think using stackalytics is a fine option for all
intent and purpose here.

So, this month I have adjusted and used Stackalytics, please note that this may
cause some discrepancies between previous core reviews. Here's the core
reviewer stats for this month[1]:

Current cores not appearing in any stats:
· Anne Gentle
· Olga Gusarenko

This is the second appearance for Anne, however I know she is working hard at
our theme consistencies, and has other patches in the works[2]. I am also aware
that Olga has been travelling, and has otherwise been unable to contribute as
often as possible. I will reach out to them both to ensure that there are no
other issues.

Current non-cores appearing in stats:

· Bruce Benjamin (30 and 90 days)
· Nicolas Bock (30 days)
· KATO Tomoyuki (All 3 columns)
· Mario Pranjic (30 days)
· Akihiro Motoki (30 days)
· Melissaml (30 and 90 days)
· John Davidge (90 days)
· Stephen Finucane (Contributions only)
· Jay Bryant (Contributions only)

Melissa (ma.lei) and Bruce Benjamin have been appearing in two or more columns
since the beginning of this year, and various times last year too. I reached
out to them last month to see if either of them were interested in learning how
to become core based off our recommendations, however I still have heard
nothing back. If anyone knows how I can contact them, please let me know ☺

This month’s big thanks go to Nicolas Bock and Akihiro Motoki who have both
stepped up from the Nova and Neutron teams respectively to help us out with any
reviews and issues. Thanks guys!

My recommendation for April is:

Drop: No one
Add: No one

I'm fine with this, and I'm also fine with dropping me as core since I'll keep
doing the same work either way.

Are you suggesting you would like to be removed as core? I admit, I would be
loath to lose you as one of our cores ☹ You have been so instrumental to the
project for such a long time!

Yay or nay?

Thanks,
Alex

Hi everyone,

Before I send out my summary email to the greater mailing lists, I felt I
should reach out to you all first as the gate keepers of the documentation
project.

As we all know, we are rapidly losing key contributors and core reviewers. We
are not alone, this is happening across the board. It is making things harder,
but not impossible. Since our inception in 2010, we’ve been climbing higher and
higher trying to achieve the best documentation we could, and uphold our high
standards. This is something to be incredibly proud of.

However, we now need to take a step back and realise that the amount of work we
are attempting to maintain is now out of reach for the team size that we have.
At the moment we have 13 cores, of which none are full time contributors or
reviewers. This includes myself.

That being said! I have spent the last week at the summit talking to some of
our leaders, including Doug Hellmann (cc’d), Jonathan Bryce and Mike Perez
regarding the future of the project. Between myself and other community
members, we have been drafting plans and coming up with a new direction that
will hopefully be sustainable in the long-term.

I am interested to hear your thoughts. I want to make sure that everyone feels
that we’re headed in the right direction first and foremost. All of these
action items are documented in this WIP etherpad:
https://etherpad.openstack.org/p/doc-planning

Here’s a few action items I’d like to highlight:

1. We have a detailed outline in the above
etherpad<https://etherpad.openstack.org/p/doc-planning> on the action items
going forward with the Installation Guide.
a. Send email to the openstack-dev mailing list requesting input with
regards to the project-specific installation guide move:
i. Request
solutions from the remaining teams that are pushing back against in-tree
content.
   ii. Agree
upon long-term maintenance solution for Installation Guide.
2. In the Administration and Operations Guide
session<https://etherpad.openstack.org/p/admin-ops-guides> we asked operators
what they wanted and how they wanted to go forward. Through a vote in the room,
operators agreed that they would like to see the Operations Guide moved out of
the openstack-manuals repo, and placed into the OpenStack
wiki<http://wiki.openstack.org/> for their own maintenance. We lose ownership,
but we also empower the operators to maintain their own guide.

Sounds fine, though who will do the migration? I'd also make sure it's not only
the people in the room who traveled that get a vote.

One of the things we mentioned in the room is that there would be a message to
the operations mailing list and that this would be a final decision.
Admittedly, I am trying to avoid going in circles a thousand times. If you all
think another vote would be best, I can do that.

I think I will probably do this migration. But other migrations we are going to
need help. We will do our best to appeal and use project liaisons to help ☺

3. Work on improving the config ref auto-generation files using sphinx
extensions:
a. Move away from using the flagmapping files (reduce manual labour)
b. See: https://etherpad.openstack.org/p/config-ref-spec
Yay.
4. Ensure the CLI ref is documenting the unified client (move to the OSC
repo).
Does this mean stop creating the nova CLI ref and so on? Sounds good to me.

I would say so, yes. Doug?

5. Implement the archiving solution for the Pike release.

Do we have someone assigned now?

Yes, Brian and Lana still believe they can help out, and Petra Sargent put up
her hand too.

6. After the Pike release, include a note on the Architecture Guide and
cease edits after that point in time.
Can this also go to the wiki or no? Not sure why this one stays for Pike?

It’s still being worked on in the Pike release, and because we have had a
considerable amount of work done to this guide while being in a draft state. I
do not wish to pull this one down to simply be tucked away. I think it is
beneficial has a stateless guide with the promise of no further working
material.
7. After a period of time, any documents that are not being maintained,
or groups have not taken ownership (Examples: Security, HA, and Networking
Guides), they will be moved out

Thanks everyone for your support :)

Since there were some email issues, I will leave this until the end of the week

We have Brian appearing in stats as well - 30 and 90 days reviews, as
well as commits.

He's not listed in colum F of your spreadsheet.

You’re completely correct – thank you for pointing that out.

Although I knew this was here, I would not say this is easy to find if you were
looking for this type of information. The contributor guide continuously grows
and grows. I wonder if it’s worth separating it into two contributor guides?
One for how to contribute, and one for conventions and guidelines? Perhaps even
as simple revisiting of the contributor guide structure might help.

I am happy to make this a goal for my first cycle as PTL. I have reached out to
the 99cloud contributors only the other day to find out what they would be
interested in working on.
But this is also a community effort, it would be nice to see people coming to
me (for Pike) and asking what they can help with. I see lots of cores floating
around without much direction (this has been me in the past, for sure).

Also, Akhiro Motoki has been doing an awesome job. Probably not suitable

Re: [Openstack-doc-core] Bug triaging issue

2015-09-29 Thread Alexandra Settle
One case study amongst many, I’m afraid, I have commented on at least one
patch a day for the last two weeks.
Everyone is trying to go by the book, but the book is not all too clear
for new contributors.

Summit session would be a great idea, there is no one answer to this
unfortunately complex problem.

I had an idea, and I want to float it by the core team. We could separate
half the core team into a triaging team, and the rest into reviews/patches
- we definitely have enough cores now. Every time the core team is
reviewed (quarterly), we mix it back up again.
Those that were triaging, move into the review/patch team, and vica versa.
It does mean that your stats will ebb and flow, but we can monitor that
appropriately if we keep track of who on the core team is doing what.

What do we think?
