I have enabled use energy saving for the screen in kde control center, and I
have also enabled a screen saver. Screen saver always works as expected, but
going to stand-by/turning off of the monitor only works sometimes and
sometimes not.

I think the most important issue for you as a business is that SLED HAS
a life cycle and open suse has not. The issue of updates is not to be
dismissed of easily- For example there was a rather large update to open
office for 10,2 Open Suse, but this update was not made available to a
10,1
If you are going to choose either a scanner or printer I agree make sure
its a real HP. You will always have Linux drivers
