Oh yes! This Problem occurs also when the NFS-Server itself is not
reachable. No NFS, no $HOME, no gnome. :-)
In case of doubt just do "cat /proc/cmdline" on a running client to have an
overview which essential settings the client received.

Okay, thanks Jörn. That at least got me looking in the right direction.
For some reason the default NFS server of $(myip) was not being sent to the
thin client, so I changed it to the DNS name and everything started working
immediately.
