Chris - DB_BLOCK_SIZE is still there definitely. And I am confident that a
create database script from 8.1.7 will work against 9.2 just fine. The issue
is that the dbca (GUI Database Configuration Assistant) wants to create
everything as 4k block size.
Rachel, Joe - Thanks for the suggestions
Thanks Scott, I'll give that a try first.

My apps person tells me that they just restore the db
I found this on the metalink:
Default permissions are rw-r--r--,which can be overridden by the
following factors:
1) The Oracle instance owner's Unix umask since Oracle is the owner of all
the server processes. It is the server process that writes the UTL_FILE

Ok but why would I create a new group? Couldn't I just chmod the permissions on the

I understand what your saying but my problem is more than just utl_file and it is ok

First off, I can't answer any OEM questions.
I don't use it, and don't care to.
You can probably do this without changing the group of the directory, but
then
all users wishing to access it would require membership in the dba group.
This is ok as long as only DBA's are accessing the files.
umask is the same for oracle on both machines and
listerner owner and group is oracle dba on both machines and
both listeners have been started by oracle
Thanks

These calls came after about 6 weeks after downloading the products.
They wanted to know what I was doing with Developer 6i and I told them I was

hi, i think doing it with exp compress=N and It should use less space.
If you are in oracle8i+, i think doing : alter table move tablespace new_ts
storage(new storage clause) is faster, and then do: alter index index_on_the table
rebuild (nologging if possible).

Are their claims based on actual experience with 9i or are they simply

Thank you all for your interest.
1 - I did not get any error message.
2 - I do not have an index named index_1 in the USER1 schema.
3 - Oracle stops means oracle crashes without an error. It gets stuck.
It waits forever and no other user(s) may connect to it.
