If I was going to go to O'Reilly I would get the CD bookshelf. It
comes with the Nutshell in hardcopy I believe. Of course you have
to be the type that does not mind reading online (or the type that
will print out the book). Their learning book is always included
and usually quite good. It is

I use the Unix in a nutshell by O'Reilly (ISBN 1-56592-427-4). It pretty
much covers all of the basics.

is probbly another good item.

Hamid - I agree with Kevin that Unix in a nutshell is an excellent book and
I use it all the time. Highly recommended. However, it is more a reference
book. If you already have a basic understanding of Unix, everything is
there. I have found beginners sometimes need something that is more a

It has the books already mentioned as well as others like Learning the Korn
Shell and sed awk. I have found it very useful.

might be helpful to you.
