I thought a little about my response and it occurred to me that my point
might have gotten lost in the details. The point was that the asker of the
question might want to refine the question. That is, was the intent to ask
about a particular OS; or was the intent to ask about a particular
CDE? DECWindows?

Does Unix has an on-line research source, like
metalink for Oracle? Pls send me the links. Much

Also is Linux pretty similar to Unix. What's the

On the difference between Unix and Linux, here is how I understand it:
All UNIX versions are derived from an ATT code base (not sure who owns it
now). All Unix vendors must pay a small royalty back to the code owners.
Linux was developed independently by many developers (not just Linus,
The word Unix is a trademark, but it gets used in a generic manner much
like the word Band-Aid is used to refer to any kind of plastic bandage, or
the way Jell-O gets used to refer to any kind of flavored gelatin. It was

Update: Solaris = SunOS + GNOME. OpenWin is gone. CDE is just there for backup
but GNOME is the official desktop now.

Any OS that comes with the same set of utilities and, on the surface,
looks like Unix, gets called Unix by non-sys admin users, even though
there is only one vendor that can legally call its OS Unix. AIX,
Solaris, HPUX, and Linux are NOT Unix; and you're not likely to see an
