James Koopmann is presenting two sessions at the Rocky Mtn Oracle Users
Group (RMOUG) Training Days on 11-12 Feb in Denver.

Sorry for the plug, but it's a cool article, he's giving two cool
presentations (see http://www.rmoug.org), and he's a cool person! Oh yeah,
it'll be a cool conference too!

..especially for those going skiing/boarding after the conference...

RE: DBA tasks

2004-01-08 Thread John Flack
I had one like that:
I created a database under our 7.1.6, because We need an Oracle database for
development. When? Yesterday!
I gave them usernames and passwords and made sure that TNSNAMES was configured.
In monitoring a few weeks later, I noticed no activity, so I asked them, That
database you wanted right away isn't being used, is there a problem. No problem, we
just had a delay, we're going to be starting any day now.
Two years later, I was upgrading some databases to 8. The database had still not been
used, other than a few objects created. Should I upgrade this database?, I asked.
Oh no, don't bother, we're not using it. Can I delete it? No, please keep it
around. We're going to need it anytime now.
A year later, I backed it up with export to tape, in case I ever wanted it back, and
deleted it (along with Oracle home for 7.1.6). Five years later, I don't think anyone
ever noticed that it was gone. The tape is in a drawer somewhere.
Most troublefree database I've ever had.

Come on! If you don't install any software, you don't have to fight all
those fires. Oh, and if you have no activity on the database, that sucker
just flies. Combine the two, and you don't have to work 45 hours a week.

Nope, not yet. When (and if) that happens, the advertising companies and networks are going to scream bloody murder.

However, you can turn on a program, wait 10 minutes, and then watch the entire thing fast-forwarding thru all commercials. Super slick. by far the coolest toy I have ever owned... even though I opted not to purchase the stripped card and adapter.

Title: RE: OT: DBA tasks

While
that's a great feature. I like the ability of Tivo to pick up shows that
you like, based on your own tastes that it "learns". Almost on a weekly
basis it captures some movie that I have never seen or saw many years ago.
And then I will watch it that night, or watch bits of it over a week when I have
time. Plus I dont have to rush home to watch something on TV, Tivo saves
it for me.

A
"Tivo" should be in every TV. But most people just dont get it.

Zapped card that allows you to get EVERY channel, and the adapter that stops DirecTV from zapping your card to nothing (in other words, they caught you). Then you have to get another card from DirecTV or buy it from someone.

I'm kinda glad we don't have it. Though I'd love to be able to watch Minneapolis TV again (and the Vikings without buying the NFL Sunday Ticket), I saw it at a friend's house and all he did was flip through 5 channels of nothing but porno. Thanks but no thanks!

It also tries to record movies on channels we don't even get. Sometimes it does some really stupid things. Plus my husband recorded one fishing program - a week later it had recorded over 30 outdoors type programs. It basically went crazy. We had to laugh!

RE: OT: DBA tasks..turning into Tivo.

2001-08-20 Thread Grabowy, Chris
Title: RE: OT: DBA tasks

As for
the recording time, its 30 hours. There's another model that does 60
hours.

The 30
hour model gives you about 18 hours worth of decent recording quality. So
it truly not 30 hours, unless you only record cartoons or something like
that. Regardless, I can barely keep up with 18 hours of recorded
stuff. Remember, when you get home therecould be18 hours worth
of stuff waiting on Tivo to be watched, and then when the next program that you
want to record is started then the oldest recorded program is deleted to make
room for the new show. So you have to keep up with what is recorded or it
will be deleted.

Also,
there are websites with instructions on how to upgrade the hard drive to a
higher capacity drive. Some people are bragging about having a Tivo with
120 hours. So? When the hell are you going to watch 120 hours worth
of TV stuff? While your watching that, Tivo is recording more for you to
watch.Endless cycle...

Anyone
else use Tivo? Experiences? Advice?

pick up shows that you like, based on your own tastes that it
"learns". Almost on a weekly basis it captures some movie that I have
never seen or saw many years ago. And then I will watch it that night,
or watch bits of it over a week when I have time. Plus I dont have to
rush home to watch something on TV, Tivo saves it for me.

A
"Tivo" should be in every TV. But most people just dont get it.

BTW, what is the stripped card and adapter???

  Nope, not yet. When (and
if) that happens, the advertising companies and networks are going to
  scream bloody murder.
However, you can turn on a
program, wait 10 minutes, and then watch the entire thing fast-forwarding
thru all commercials. Super slick. by far the coolest toy I

Title: RE: OT: DBA tasks..turning into Tivo.

Lisa,

There
are options within Tivo so that you can tell it which channels you dont
get. Also, it needs to know if your using Basic, or Extended Basic, what
pay channels, etc.

Yes,
it tries to record stuff that you like. Like I selected Tennis and
Volleyball, so anytime a tennis or vball game is on, regardless of the time, it
records it for me. Dont forget to use the "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" to
teach it what you like.

Have
fun.

Chris

Zapped card that allows you to get
EVERY channel, and the adapter that stops DirecTV from zapping your card to
nothing (in other words, they caught you). Then you have to get another
card from DirecTV or buy it from someone.
I'm kinda glad we don't have
it. Though I'd love to be able to watch Minneapolis TV again (and the
Vikings without buying the NFL Sunday Ticket), I saw it at a friend's house
and all he did was flip through 5 channels of nothing but porno. Thanks
  but no thanks!
It also tries to record movies on
channels we don't even get. Sometimes it does some really stupid
things. Plus my husband recorded one fishing program - a week later it
had recorded over 30 "outdoors" type programs. It basically went
  crazy. We had to laugh!

Oracle DBA 101 from Oracle Press. By some author(s) that often pop up
here on list. Can't imagine who that could be. Check

If you search the net, you should also turn up some documents to
