The world is filled with many odd and astonishing facts. For some
unknown reason, this evening, before reading this post, I discovered
that Saint Fiacre is also the saint to whom people turned for relief of
hemorrhoids. Really. How this might be directed toward orchids, I'm not
yet sure.
Hi,
I have grown orchids under lights for many years. I use the cheap 4 foot
two light fixtures. I have them mounted two fixtures side by side to make a
four bulb lighted area. I have always used the cool white bulbs and my plants
grow and bloom great. Paphs, Phals, Cats even Ascocendas.
Which saint should I invoke to when one of my orchids passes away or before
it is too late ?
Regards,
Viateur

Oh dear, Iris.
In OGD V6 #355, you said: I believe most of the people in this group grow

Would someone please recommend an efficient way to rid Paphs of mealybugs.
I've used insecticidal soap and parafinic oil weekly, and occasional spray of
Bayer Rose and Flower Insect killer (cyfluthrin + imidacloprid), but the bugs
reemerge when I stop. Do the bugs hide down in the potting media?
I have been growing orchids in the basement under lights for about 25
years. I use 4 feet fluorescent tubes in 4 tube fixtures and 2 tube
fixtures (2 units side by side to simulate a 4 tube fixture). I have
had the best results using a mix of cool white and warm light tubes. I

I've been out of town for a couple of days and he is just quietening down
nicely and now he'll start frothing at the mouth again! Iris will probably
redo the calculations and declare that the AOS lobby needs six full spectrum

Hi Mike,
I'm impressed with the genera you're able to flower under cool lights,
esp. the Ascos. How close to the plants are the lights? I think I'll
try the longer days, (the longest I've done is 14 hours) which helped
for sure, but I'm sure you're right about the 16 hr. days being the
critical
