It is not safe or practical to watch the screen all the time, and it is
often blacked out except when instructions

Andrew makes a good point.
Osmand is probably the best GPS navigator of its type, (it has become my
daily favourite for land-based use) but the developers, whose baby it is,
have nurtured its' growth since conception, and may not necessarily see it
through the eyes of a beginner.
