I occasionally use Osmand for hiking and was originally staggered by the battery drain even screen off. However I didn't use it to navigate, just to check my position now and then. I discovered that returning to the home screen before turning the screen off made a major reduction in power use.

Note that everything the phone does drains battery, more or less. You could see the battery usage per app in the configuration settings of the battery, then with some common sense and some try/error you could try to improve your battery life by disabling some apps or services that you don't
