I have a question regarding midwives performing
the newborn examination postnatally prior to discharge.
Having worked in several hospitals, I am used to
this exam being performed by a doctor/paediatrician. The midwife does an
initial check atbirthbut on about day 3 or 4, or at

At Peninsula Health the
midwives nowhave to be accredited to do any newborn exam at all, discharge
or otherwise.
In-house education
is required !

I think the only indicator that you "might" get a
shoulder dyst is a longer than expected 2nd stage. i.e. with a primip,
longer than 2 1/2 hrs, and with a multip, longer than 45 mins. You might
want to change strategies and help hydrate the woman that you're seeing with a
long 2nd stage.
