Subject: [ozmidwifery] Birth
Dear Diane, after the ICM congress I went to Byron
Bay which is not far from Lismore . To my dissapointment I discovered that Byron
Bay Hospital have two lovely birth rooms but no-one uses it. Of course politics
and lack of Obs given as the reason. But no reason really if you wish to birth
This is really interesting, I recently birthed with
a woman and she had a friend who was an osteopath and said that it was not good
to lift babies up by their legs to put a nappy on. The idea being that it was
pressure somewhere on the neck region so to change a nappy rolling side to side
Dear Joanne, I have recently come into contact with
someone who really believes in these magnets. I'm trying them out on my old
knees as they got a bit wrecked a number of years ago with parvovirus and all
the kneeling we do as a midwives is a bit tough on them . There is a store in
I think the sticker is a good idea, when i went to Oslo ICM there was an
impromtu meeting of all midwives who did homebirths. We gathered together in
one of the rooms and discussed where we were from and what our access for
women having homebirth was. I met two Midwives from Holland and got a lift
I have used ice on the cervix but only a couple of time. first
time it helped reduce swelling but there was cpd and LSCS was eventually
performed. Second time anterior lip that wasnt seeming to go down with
hands and knees Mum very frustrated The ice was placed inside my glove middle
Julie all that was missing was a bit more time, perhaps a
change in position. This happens so often I believe, it's an indication of
lack of flexibility and that whole ego thing of people not realising how things
in a labouring woman change. The "fat lip" I imagine was due to the too early
I have looked after two women with bicornate uterus at home no problems
however one woman was told to be cautious with placenta as sometimes the
positioning of it can be a bit complicated. I was watch full and there was
a lot of bleeding so we used syntocinon once the cord had stopped pulsating,
Only a few things to add. take a wedge to wedge the door
closed(sneaky but forces those that barge to Knock first) I guess you stress
that it is new life and she is doing the work to bring her baby into the
world. Practicing with holding ice, stay at home as long as possible,
maybe tell the
Ive found withe the use of Jasmin essential oil rubbed on the
lower abdomen and drinking raspberry leaf tea the pain is reduced
too.
Kirstie Marshall is obviously a really sensible new mother.
Poor thing having to go to work at 11 days postnatal. Says a lot about the
"convict mentality" Australia has around women. Does she have fan mail
cause I think she is wonderful and I fully support any woman breastfeeding
anywhere.
Just a thought Andrea but I would suggest some rest, maybe some different
forms of exercise swimming maybe. Perhaps a check Hb and clotting disorders?
I would recommend iron supplementation or high diet in iron and fluids. She
could try slippery elm powder, oats to reduce inflammation and maybe a
years ago now between the births of my two babies I had a FDIU
at 20 weeks. I did not realise it until I had U/S after having a very late blood
test for neuro tube defects. On U/s it was estimated that the baby had in
fact probably died 2 or three weeks previous 17-18weeks gestation. My Dr
Dear listers, a happy Midwives day to you all on 5th
May. WA celebrations sound wonderful I wish I could be there. if anyone
went to the ICM congress and wants to give a run down of what it was like I'm
all eyes and ears. Alas this time around I could not go, legal stuff has sucked
up my
Dear friends, Ive just nearly recovered from one of those
marathon labour and births that give me hope and I wish to share with you
all. First baby planning to birth at home. The labour got long 24hrs + for
the mother and there was arrest at 3cm for 4 hours. Exhaustion starting to set
in so
Dear Oz Midders, what a feisty bunch you all are.
The Guild insurance fiasco has indeed made me stop in my tracks around
birthing at home or providing continuity of care. BUT only for the moment.
At the moment and for the last three half years I have been
going through the litigation
