It seems to me that people think that a caseloading midwife never cares
for
people who are afraid of childbirth. (both men women) The truth is, that
many of my clients are just as frightened as those in the system. The
difference is, that at each
ever it is so hard to talk so many women out of
"their epidural", there has been an amazing PR campaign.

Sue, I think that the lack of "continuity of care" models contribute
enormously to the attitude of women to their labour birth. During
1-2-1- care we have the opportunity to educate women on WHY labour is important
to both the woman and the baby. (a la Michel Odent Sarah Buckley)
Why it
So elegantly and wonderfully said, Mary.

I encounter this every time I do shifts at a
particular hospital in CQ, so much so I turn down casual shifts there unless I'm
feeling particularly strong in mind and body. And my pet hate is being called a
nurse instead of a midwife.

Michelle, I hear what you're saying loud clear from a student's point of view!
While I have been blessed to have been able to work with some fabulously woman-centred midwives both within the hospital setting outside, it is enormously frustrating to betaught all of the woman-centred stuff @ uni
.
There is always hope!

Dear Nicole and all
I assume you are talking about Katoomba?
I was unaware that you were still involved. The lack of action at Katoomba is a tragedy and I believe it was set up to fail (no different to many other AHS -dont worry).

Hello Nicole,
I understand your frustration and amazement about the different styles of
midwifery that are out there. I agree with Mary that the environemnt in
the hospital has a powerful effect on the midwives who work there, as well
as the women and the comment from Micehlle (the student)

Your comments Nicole are superb.
I am currently finishing my 'obstetric training'
at a 'referral hospital' as a student midwife.
Unfortunately, Ihave got myself into big
trouble trying to empower women and give woman-centred care

I have been feeling exactly the same way -

After working for the most part of two years on

Dear Jo,
No lynching
You are right!!
For me Midwives, like consumers, are
microcosm of our society!
None are all good, some have some bad
daysor times or in the reflection of others look likeand we
can not all respond appropriately to every one in every
situation.
Even those who
agree. So many 'midwives' I've worked with are really 'ob
nurses'. They do ARM's, continuous CTG's on healthy women, they push analgesic,
they want her to do what they want, the dr orders. Active 3rd stage, 4/24 VE's,
augment if progress 'too slow'. Need I go on? They take control, and
some
in this area.

Jo,
I totally agree with you! Working in a tertiary
setting I know first hand that what you say is true, and unfortunately it is
these 'ob nurses' that seem to have the loudest voice, so sabotaging any effort
to create midwifery led care in any form. Which I find sad and
frustrating.
