Hi Sue, I believe iron infusions, as opposed to intramuscular iron injections, can be risky. At my workplace they do not take place on the wards, but only under supervision in the intensive care unit. As you seem to be saying, the woman does not seem to have any indication that such drastic action

Hi Sue: It seems to me that iron infusions are often advised for anyone who has a Hb less than 100, antenatally/postnatally asymptomatic/symptomatic and blood transfusions for postnates with Hb's less than 80 or 90 depending on the doctor because again the woman maybe asymptomatic. Also

Without knowing her iron stores I would say avoid the iron infusion. A Hb of 9 should correct well with a good diet with adequate red meat and regular exercise. It will be much slower if she does not eat red meat. If she feels well milk supply is adequate I believe the risks of an iron
