As stated before, getting an Apple ID is a good idea and might be required, but
you don't need an iPhone for that. As a matter of fact, I don't know of any

That's correct if you want to do that sort of thing, I hope I explained that in
an earlier message I sent.
You can also use the IOS with your Apple TV in the form of a remote controller
with the Apple Remote app from the Apps store.
As stated originally, an iPhone etc isn't necessary for the
iPad is exactly the same as iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad - and even Apple TV -
are all IOS devices smile.
