Which it does a very good job at.

I just received my VRStream yesterday, and I was a little
disappointed in the quality of recording, at least from the built in
mic. Haven't had a chance to try it with an external mic. The
microphone's level of sensitivity isn't adjustable or configurable.
In other words, if you want quality for other than taking off handed
notes for yourself you will need to invest in another product. The
audio reproduction isn't good enough for Podcasting g.

As for file formatting, it uses it's own proprietary format. Of
course you can convert these to .wav with their conversion utility
within the Stream Companion software, but you will have to reconvert
them to .mp3 via another option such as Goldwave, or Cdex. And no, it
will not record in stereo, not even with a stereo mic. It's purpose
for offering recording capability is clearly stated, for taking personal
 notes.

You could probably use the mic for recording meetings or lectures,
but it would help to not be an a room with lots of reverb, or
 background noise.

Re: CD Copying machines

2008-05-10 Thread Gary Schindler
it is a matter of preference, sometimes in certain situations you want a
stand alone machine. if your computer is down, you won't copy anything. your
computer might be tied up and you don't have the computer resources to do
any copying at the time. you are also talking portability. if you get the
right duplicator, you can carry it in a backpack. then there is the cost of
the computer which is going to exceed the cost of the copier. if someone
doesn't know how to put in the drives on the computer that is another
expense. maybe people like granny don't have the knowhow to use a computer
so a copier makes it easier for her to copy discs for her bingo buddies
while she reads her email done on the hp mailbox printer utilizing presto
services. to wrap it up, the machines are out their, if you don't want to
use them, you don't have to, it is a nice alternative if you choose to use
it.

 Hello,
I bought a machine that was sat up like that about 4 years ago.
It does record from CD to CD.
But however, it won't make copies of store bought CD's.
But if you still want to do that with that unit, run a pare of RCA
 cables
from the record out of your stereo receiver and in to the record in of
 the
 unit.
But keep in mind, you will have to change the tracks on the CD while
 it's
 recording.
Or else, you will have a CD with 1 big track.
 My best regards.

Yes, quite agree. The sensitivity of the internal mic is very good too and
one could quite easily record a small round table meeting using it.

If anyone has used an external mic with the Stream I'd like to hear about it
as folks here on the UK Stream list have said they find it hard to find a
mic which suits the Stream.

Cheers,

I agree with Bruce on this one.
Given that the purpose of the VR Stream is hardly as a recording device,
it actually does a rather decent job and acceptible in noncritical
 recording situations.

I think if you plugged in some good headphones, and played the recordings,
you'd be surprised, or, exported it to a *.wav file using the stream
companion software, you'd be surprised somewhat. Quality isn't the need
here, usability for particular purposes like note taking, and it does
pretty good at lecture recording also, especially with an external mic you
can aim at the speaker.

Adobe Audition Scripts

2008-05-10 Thread G. McFarlane
Hi
I wonder if anyone else who uses the scripts can help.
I've tried the scripts on Audition 1.5 with Jaws 7, and Jaws 9, and they work
pretty well in multitrack view. But I always find in whichever machine I'm on,
that the scripts make navigation difficult by dialog boxes in the Edit View,
e.g. you can enter a dialog box but can't tab round it - you have to use the
Jaws cursor.
Am I alone in this and if not are there any solutions, like for example a
particular screen mode?

Unless anyone else knows differently Adobe Audition only works as far as

Perhaps if someone is using the latest version 3 they could let us know how

Subject: A question regarding multitrack recording

 Greetings all

For the past 7-8 years I've been using Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 (yes, I
 realise
that this program is now ancient), but the reason I stuck with Cakewalk
 so
long, is because it works for me, and I know it well.
However, I'm increasingly needing to import .mp3 files into my projects,
 but
every time I want to use an mp3 file, I have to convert it back to wave
 format.

 My question then is this:
Is there a program that would allow you to do multitrack recordings, but
would also allow you to import files in other formats than wav, e.g. mp3,
 flac, ogg, etc?
Also, would said program be reasonably accessible, and if not, are there
Jaws scripts for the program available?

Thanks for any help, it will be much appreciated.

 All the best

Thanks for all the info about the Victor Stream. I was hoping it would at
least be able to record at 128k mp3 or wma. Stereo is a good way to get

not intended for this purpose. I just wish it was. I don't like carrying a

Re: recording with Victor Stream

2008-05-10 Thread Mike Pietruk
Bob

One of the advantages of the Stream, as it records at a low rate, is that
recordings take up less space. It's designed as a voice recorder, not
something to record a symphony concert with.
And that's for the better, in my estimation, as it discourages
bootlegging.
The VR Stream is a mp3 player and book reader, not an all purpose audio
machine.
By designing it the way it is, HumanWare was able to keep its price at the
reasonable end of the spectrum.
If you truly need a recorder, buy a recorder.
If you want something to play mp3 podcasts and radio shows and sermons, my
principal use of the Stream, this fills the bill.
If you want to play NLS digital talking books, Audible Books, or RFBD
books, the Stream fills the bill.
If you wish to read textfiles and electronic texts, the Stream can do this
too though, personally, I'd have to be pretty desperate to listen to the
supplied synthesized speech.
Let it be said, I'm biased towards TripleTalk/Double Talk speech of the
BookPort and that which I have on my pcs.

Re: Mp3 cataloguing

2008-05-10 Thread Bobcat
I am trying Cathy now. Jaws had a little trouble seeing the tabs. You need
to find the catalogue tab first but the program starts in the search tab. I
found I needed to refresh Jaws and use the mouse cursor to find the other
tabs.

You need to right click a file to get options such as deleting. File
deletion is off by default. You need to start Cathy with a -dd switch to
allow deletion from the program. You could make a shortcut for the program
add -dd to the target. Or, you could use run and type cathy -dd but Cathy
would have to be on a path. Easier to make a shortcut to the program.

I happened upon the following free utility at download.com that might be
what you are looking for. I haven't tried it yet but plan to.

 Publisher's description of Cathy
 From
 Robert Vasicek:
Cathy is an extremly small, very fast and easy to use media cataloging
tool. You can use it to index files stored on removable media (CD-ROMs,
 LS120, Iomega
Zip and Jaz disks, or even diskettes), hard disks or net drives, and
 create
searchable catalogs that can be used without having access to original
 media.
Searching capabilities are based on file name, date and size. Additional
features include filtering options, search duplicates or singles,
 customizable
date format, etc. Found files can be opened (executed) or deleted
 directly,
if they are present. Drag and drop support. Directory trees, MP3
 album/song
lists can be printed, disk space usage can be investigated.

Good Morning,

I'm afraid I may have a few duplicates Any help would be much

Re: recording with Victor Stream

2008-05-10 Thread constantine (on laptop)
Hi

I love doubletalk on the book port. I can't stand reading text files with
the stream; the voice just seems way too slow! I like it faster, which
doubletalk does a great job at. Also, I checked out my info on a 2 gb sd
card. 300 hours of available recording time (that's right, 300)! Actually
that was with about 700 mb taken, so about 1.1 gb there. Pretty good imho.
If you want a recorder, you would want something like the olympus, which
comes with an external mic (the ds30, anyway). THe vr stream is not a stand
alone voice recorder as Mike said- so, that would explain some things. It
does, however, serve its purpose as a multi tasking unit. I love it, for the
most part- the only gripe I have with it is the fact that it doesn't last as
long as the book port, and you can't change the battery (it has an internal
one that is replacable but only with a certin kind, not A A which I like).

Have a good day from Tyler C. Wood!

There's nothing- and there never will be- for the simple reason that since
there is no screen, it would most likely be impossible to code. But, if you
organize your music just so (first by artist, than album, for example, or
maybe genre, then artist), that might help some!

I hope that helps- sorry for being so pesimistic, grin

Re: Synching Files for the Victor Stream

2008-05-10 Thread Jeffrey Dunn

Hi:

I too use Juice for obtaining podcasts, I also transfer a
great deal of music for listening, and hope that there
is an equivalent program for media management, not just
for synching but for creating play lists.

The companion software unfortunately lacks these features,
but maybe the folks at Humanware might enhance that for us.
In the meantime, I'm keeping a look out for alternatives.

The problem is that it takes some time sifting through Juice's downloads

a folder which can then be transferred to a sdhc card for the Stream.
Is anyone using a software utility that collects desired files on an
ongoing basis into a directory which then can be quickly transferred onto
a sdhc card for the Stream?

Thanks in advance for some ideas.

Hi

Ok, let's clear this up once and for all. If you aren't using the
computer, there's no way you'd ever be able to use
JAWS or any other screenreader for this kind of thing.

If you're refering to the 1 GB model of the Zen stone, you can use
the button on the back of the unit to switch between folders. if
pushed all the way to the right, the player is in shuffle mode, which
obviously, means that it plays all files on the player in random
order. pushing it to the left means that it's in regular mode like
normal. If you push the button to the left once more, and you have
multiple folders with files in them, the player switches to the next
folder and begins playing the first file in the series, or at random
depending on how you have the player set to do. but no, no scripts
at all are needeed for this, even when it's attached to the computer.
It just plane does not need them, period.

Re: zenstone...it does not need scripts

2008-05-10 Thread Bruce Toews
Actually, there are scripts, available from www.hartgen.org. Here's the
info:

You can simply copy and paste MP3 and WMA files using Windows Explorer.
However, there is software which can be downloaded called Creative Media
Lite, which allows you to not only rip tracks from audio CD, but in
addition once the audio extraction has taken place, the music is
automatically transferred to the player. So for a person who does not
want to get into the business of copying music to the player, this could
be very good. When connected to the computer for charging, Creative Media
Lite will advise you how much space is available on the player together
with the battery charge status. The software is also used to update the
firmware of the unit. Free scripts for JAWS for Windows are available
from this page containing the following functionality:

Most of the buttons speak their names as you use Tab, Shift+Tab or
Insert+Tab. There is still a bit of work to be done in the Settings
Dialog of the CD ripper as the fields do not speak correctly but this will
come in time.

When you Tab into the main drive list or the Zen player contents list, the
individual list is identified.

F12 activates the Audio CD rip Button.

Usefully, you can now check or uncheck the songs to be extracted from a CD
from the list by pressing Space Bar. JAWS will announce if the song is
checked or unchecked.

ALT+Control+V will allow you to set the maximum volume of the player and
access the parental controls.

ALT+Control+U enables updates to be accessed via the Internet.

F11 tells you the charge of the player and the amount of free space.

A small amount of Hotkey Help is available.

Has anyone written any scripts for the ZinStone which will enable a
 person
to know folder and files titles while arrowing through them? Thanks.

 Vicki

Major sport to be streamed

2008-05-10 Thread Stephen Jolley
Hi list members and others,

There's a lot of major sport to happen soon as the Northern summer gets in to
full swing.

Keep with my page and you should be right for getting to the action.

Amongst the events to entertain us are:
.Cricket in England with New Zealand followed later by South Africa. The
first test starts this Thursday, May 15.
.A week later, overlapping cricket when Australia start the first test in
the West Indies.
.Tennis, with the French Open starting on May 25.
.International Athletics including the Golden League which has the first of
six meets from June 1.
Later on there is Wimbledon tennis from June 23, British Open Golf from July 17
and US Open Tennis from August 25.

That's only what I know about.
Not confident about streaming of the Olympics and Euro 2008, but you never know.

If this is of interest to you, hold on to this message and keep checking my
page as that's preferable to troubling other list members, every time something
we already know about starts to move.

More sport than you can poke a stick at.

Re: recording with Victor Stream

2008-05-10 Thread David Tanner
Yes, the Braille Plus from American Printing House for the Blind is a notetaker
with a hard drive, address book, media player that handles a number of file
formats, bookshelf that handles NLS books, bookshare, Braille *.brf, MS Word
*.doc, text *.txt,. The unit also has web browser, RSS, email,
calendar/planner, stopwatch, several games, and more. The digital recorder
does a fair job with its' internal mike, but with an external stereo mike it
will do a fantastic job, and includes the ability to change bit rate and
sampling rate. It can record in MP3 or WAV.

: I just received my VRStream yesterday, and I was a little
: disappointed in the quality of recording, at least from the built in
: mic. Haven't had a chance to try it with an external mic. The
: microphone's level of sensitivity isn't adjustable or configurable.
: In other words, if you want quality for other than taking off handed
: notes for yourself you will need to invest in another product. The
: audio reproduction isn't good enough for Podcasting g.
:
: As for file formatting, it uses it's own proprietary format. Of
: course you can convert these to .wav with their conversion utility
: within the Stream Companion software, but you will have to reconvert
: them to .mp3 via another option such as Goldwave, or Cdex. And no, it
: will not record in stereo, not even with a stereo mic. It's purpose
: for offering recording capability is clearly stated, for taking personal
: notes.
:
: You could probably use the mic for recording meetings or lectures,
: but it would help to not be an a room with lots of reverb, or
: background noise.
