From what I recall of Neal Ewers' review of the Sony it isn't madly
accessible, but usable. Search out Neal's piece on it on BCT.

Well, I own the Zoom H2, and can' complain.

The Zoom isn't really that accessible, although Neal Ewers has a rather
valuable tutorial up at blindcooltech about it.
However, if you really want to go for the quality option, I would recommend
the Sony PCM D50 (not included in your list, quite expensive, but well worth
every cent).

RE: R09HR, Zoom H2, or Zoom H4?

2009-01-07 Thread Quinten Pendle
Hi

Well, there are many buttons on the sony itself, designated to perform
definite, and in my case frequently used, functions.
The actual menus of the sony isn't very accessible, unless you have a good
memory.
But even so, the Sony is worth every cent.
I own both the Zoom H2 and the Sony PCM D50, and I've now bought a pair of
binaural microphones from Core-Sound, which I've used on both recorders.
On each level the Sony stands out head and shoulders above the Zoom.

Seeking Opinions on Creative X-FI Cards

2009-01-07 Thread John Gurd
I am interested in the range of Creative X-FI sound cards. In particular I
see there is a software pack which allows the card to use Dolby Digital Live
which I want to take advantage of. My worry is that SoundBlaster drivers
have sometimes been problematic for Jaws users. Does anyone have experience
of using these cards successfully and what is your opinion of sound quality,
etc? I want to match it with a set of Logitec Z5500 5.1 speakers which I
already have and really am impressed with.

Re: High capacity SD cards with Victor Reader Stream

2009-01-07 Thread Ray
Hi. Yes, formatting a 16 gig card does indeed take a long time. I haven't
the very latestfirmware revision installed but I got no progress indication
while it was all happening silently.

I'm not sure, but he latest firmware might insist you have the power supply
plugged in while formatting a card - a good idea.

Some debate as to the highest card the Victor Stream is supposed to handle,
but on the Stream Uk list it's been reported that someone is using a 32 gig
card without problems so far.

I'd add that branded cards such as Sandisc or Integral and Kingston are a
good bet if you want reliability.

Hi.

I'm using a 32 gig SD HC card with no problem. It takes a little time to

I can't answer the formatting question, since all the cards I use worked

Also you can play mms live streams in foobar.
I never want to pay for any media player out there as long as there are good

I don't know how many players out there which are not free of charge but it
seems most of the players is free of charge.

1. I can add the ability to play an entire folder in Foobar from Windows
Explorer, fare enough its complicated to do, but works great once I've done
it. 2. I can stream files off the net using Foobar. I just add the link to
my playlist. 3. I have a multimedia keyboard, so I have a pause key that
works with Foobar, plus, notice the option in the keyboard section of the
Foobar preferences, Global Hotkey. If I check that box, a keyboard
shortcut, say for pausing, Playing etc will work anywhere in Windows.

Hi Anders,
Yes, I had a look to Foobar2000. Its a good one, but there are some things
in MaPlEr you may wanna notice: You can play a whole folder from the windows
explorer by just selecting Play with MaPlEr from the file menu. You can
pause and resume the playback from everywhere in windows by using the pause
key. You can play an audiolink from the internet without downloading it
first. The userinterface seems to be more usuable to me. And, yes, it's not
free, but the price is only 7,00 Euro, not too much, I think. You can try
the program, but you'll hear a message every 90 seconds in the demo version.

Best regards
Marco

RE: R09HR, Zoom H2, or Zoom H4?

2009-01-07 Thread Martin, Tim A., NMDOT
Hi Brad,

The Sony is usable as far as simple operation. You will need someone to
help you get the date and time set when you first turn on the machine.
Once this is done, you should be able to record and playback with ease.
As far as the menus, it is like any non-talking machine, takes quite a
lot of memorizing. It has both an input and output volume knob, which
is quite nice. I just received mine Saturday, and had my 10 year old
help me with setting date and time. He also told me the name of each
button and jac. Besides having great recording quality, the moment you
plug it in to the USB on the computer, you have access to all of the
folders.

Any more questions, let me know.

Tim Martin

RE: Seeking opinions on Olympus WS-210S digital recorder

I have one and think it's a pretty good machine. My one criticism would be
the fact that it has no moveable storage. This means that you have to get
things off of it and onto a PC fairly quickly if you are a frequent user.
Well, I also have to say that I'm not thrilled about the limited record
volume settings.

Re: PTP1 and the Victor Stream query.

2009-01-07 Thread Rick Alfaro
Now that I have had my Stream for a while I can comment regarding music
playback.

I love my Stream, so make no mistake there, best $300 I have spent in a
long time and I understand that music playback is not the primary
function of the Stream. having said that, I did a side by side
comparison between my Stream and an Ipod Mini, playing through the same
set of amplified speakers. The Stream was ok, but the Ipod sounded
noticeably better, cleaner output, and just a better sound generally
speaking. I should add that I also used the same cable on both devices.
This did not surprise me however as the Ipod's sole mission in life is
to play music, but that was my take.

I have an idea that perhaps the two units aim at slightly different segments
of the market perhaps? Talthough the xtreme is perhaps better at polaying
music for example, the ptr seems to be much more geared towards making good
quality recordings. So it will perhaps depend on what you would like your
unit to do?

Does anyone know how the new Plextalk PTP1 stacks up against the Victor

There's btjunkie.org, and demonoid.com. Demonoid is only open for

invited, but you only get so many invitations you can use. Also
thepiratebay.org is a good place to look, too. Some sites are a bit teedius
to get through, but once you do its easy enough.

RE: High capacity SD cards with Victor Reader Stream

2009-01-07 Thread Bradford Trainham
Hi,
Not sure of the brand of the card I got as it was a birthday present, but I
did get the formatting done, copied about 8.5 gigs of music over and am now
experimenting with playback, file organization and such.
It may not be the best sound in the world, but it's quite nice to have all
your mp3 tag info read and portability is nice too.
This is a 16-gig card and the formatting took several hours, but it's
certainly working now.

Does the Sony PCM D50 keep the date and time when you change batteries?

To bad the PCM D50 doesn't set date and time when connected to the computer
