From what I recall of Neal Ewers' review of the Sony it isn't madly accessible, but usable. Search out Neal's piece on it on BCT. Ray. Bradford Trainham wrote: Hi, Is the Sony machine accessible? RE: R09HR, Zoom H2, or Zoom H4?
Hi Well, there are many buttons on the sony itself, designated to perform definite, and in my case frequently used, functions. The actual menus of the sony isn't very accessible, unless you have a good memory. But even so, the Sony is worth every cent. I own both the Zoom H2 and the Sony PCM D50, and I've now bought a pair of binaural microphones from Core-Sound, which I've used on both recorders. On each level the Sony stands out head and shoulders above the Zoom. -Original Message-HTH Quinten Pendle PENDLE PRO Klerksdorp, South Africa Tel: +27 (0) 83 395 4593 Fax: +27 (0)86 516 0498 Email and Msn: pendle...@isat.co.za Skype: ahakimbo Website: www.pendlepro.com From: Bradford Trainham [mailto:bradford.train...@sbcglobal.net] Sent: Wednesday, January 07, 2009 8:48 AM To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Subject: RE: R09HR, Zoom H2, or Zoom H4? Re: High capacity SD cards with Victor Reader Stream
Hi. Yes, formatting a 16 gig card does indeed take a long time. I haven't the very latestfirmware revision installed but I got no progress indication while it was all happening silently. I'm not sure, but he latest firmware might insist you have the power supply plugged in while formatting a card - a good idea. Some debate as to the highest card the Victor Stream is supposed to handle, but on the Stream Uk list it's been reported that someone is using a 32 gig card without problems so far. I'd add that branded cards such as Sandisc or Integral and Kingston are a good bet if you want reliability. Ray. RE: R09HR, Zoom H2, or Zoom H4?
Hi Brad, The Sony is usable as far as simple operation. You will need someone to help you get the date and time set when you first turn on the machine. Once this is done, you should be able to record and playback with ease. As far as the menus, it is like any non-talking machine, takes quite a lot of memorizing. It has both an input and output volume knob, which is quite nice. I just received mine Saturday, and had my 10 year old help me with setting date and time. He also told me the name of each button and jac. Besides having great recording quality, the moment you plug it in to the USB on the computer, you have access to all of the folders. Any more questions, let me know. I have one and think it's a pretty good machine. My one criticism would be the fact that it has no moveable storage. Re: PTP1 and the Victor Stream query.
Now that I have had my Stream for a while I can comment regarding music playback. I love my Stream, so make no mistake there, best $300 I have spent in a long time and I understand that music playback is not the primary function of the Stream. having said that, I did a side by side comparison between my Stream and an Ipod Mini, playing through the same set of amplified speakers. The Stream was ok, but the Ipod sounded noticeably better, cleaner output, and just a better sound generally speaking. I should add that I also used the same cable on both devices. This did not surprise me however as the Ipod's sole mission in life is to play music, but that was my take. RE: Seeking Opinions on Creative X-FI Cards
Hi John, Those cards will work nicely and sound nice with Logitec Z5500 5.1 speakers. They are the speakers I have. I have used a lot of creative cards with these speakers and as long as the card supports digital i/o, there will be no problems with drivers or anything. Oh and they sound great. I usually tell my creative cards to enable SPDIF pass-through. RE: High capacity SD cards with Victor Reader Stream
Hi, Not sure of the brand of the card I got as it was a birthday present, but I did get the formatting done, copied about 8.5 gigs of music over and am now experimenting with playback, file organization and such. It may not be the best sound in the world, but it's quite nice to have all your mp3 tag info read and portability is nice too. This is a 16-gig card and the formatting took several hours, but it's certainly working now. Re: R09HR, Zoom H2, or Zoom H4?
Does the Sony PCM D50 keep the date and time when you change batteries? Also, can batteries charge in the machine? To bad the PCM D50 doesn't set date and time when connected to the computer or does it? I have Sony Digital Voice Editor software for a Sony voice recorder. It has an option to update the date and time on compatible recorders. Sadly, my voice recorder ICD-P620 doesn't have that feature and looses the time every time I change batteries. That's interesting because a friend of mine said she hasn't ever had to format a card either. I wonder how the proper folder structure gets on those cards if they're never formatted. The licence was maybe $20. I got it a number of years ago and forgot. I can't find any place on the net now where I can refresh or purchase a licence. Don't know what happened to Spacializer. They practically invented 3d from 2 speakers. I found a site All About Spatializer with the story: whttp://jeronimomachado.vilabol.uol.com.br/spatializer.htm Sadly, the links to the product pages don't work. I am almost sure it keeps time and date for some time if you've got to change the batteries, although I've only had to do this once, some time ago. Someone, correct me if I'm wrong.
