Hi everyone,

I'm needing information about a program that I believe is called
LightScribe.

Where do you get it, and can someone describe for me exactly what it
does and how it works? If it does what I think, it is a program that I
need to get. What is the cost?

TIA

RE: portable studio for recording

The Nagra. That's the one I use. It's lovely. Nicely accessible.

Any stereo recordings could be turned mono in your editing software on
your computer is the other point to come back to.I'm sure you wouldn't
be putting it out there unedited or untreated.

Coming to this rather late.

Yes, the Zoom H1 would fit the bill but it should be stressed it won't
actually record in mono; few of the cheap end recorders do.

One that might is the new Olypus LS 5 which, if I'm not mistaken, does
support .mp3 at 64kbs in mono, plenty good enough for not too demanding
voice recordings.

I think one of the smaller Marantz offerings supports genuine mono
recording too.

For a microhone I'd be looking at Rode or Audio Technica, or maybe SE
elctronics.

Think the recorder Damon's refering to is the Nagra Airs M. this has 2,
or is it 4 GB of internal memory but is a high end recorder costing five
to six hundred quid if you're a humble individual buyer.
Still returning to real world priced equipment, converting the two track
recording to single track mono is no hassel in a sound editor.

Hope that's all of some help somewere or other.
Ray

Hi, because I've noticed that when I convert it to mono, the sound of the

Zoom H1 it is then.

Am surprised that the radio station you work with doesn't allow you to borrow
equipment to record with, though.

There's a particular high end solid state recorder I like to use from the
Equipment Centre at the BBC which I find extremely accessible ... Though I've
forgotten it's name totally. It only has built in memory and you need to use an
external mic.

The DM520 units are quite cheap and - assuming I can do line in

Hi,

Is it possible to use the Zoom H1 as a sound device when connected to a

I have received a MP3 file of a lecture where the speaker did
not speak into the microphone. Can anybody think of utilities or
programs I might use to make the sound more audible? Also, are there
utilities I can use to filter out hum and background noise? The audio
files I get are sometimes not in the best shape.

I have Windows Media Player on my system. I use the latest version of
Window-eyes on an XP machine. Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi All,

I am frustrated! All I want to do is locate a website where I can go in
and purchase two or three songs that I'd like to have, but I don't want
to sign up for any music service or anything like that. Is there such a
site.

I've already tried Amazon and they have what I want, but I can't just
download the song I want, they want me to buy the entire album. I only
want to purchase one song. Every site I go to they want you to sign up
for something and I don't want to do that. All I want to do is buy one
song.
Yes, I'm perfectly happy to buy it. I'm not looking for free music. I
just want to locate the song I want.

Suggestions?

RE: requesting Juice tutorial

2010-10-20 Thread Damon Rose
Don't think you need one really.

Control N allows you to add a podcast feed. Just paste it in.

F5 checks all the feeds you've subscribed to and then starts downloading
the podcasts.

F6 very helpfully adjusts the download process so that you only get the
top podcast from every feed when you nexzt hit F5.

If you want to put all the podcasts you've downloaded, onto your mp3
player. Go to My Documents, then click on a new folder you'll see there
called 'My received podcasts' and paste everything onto your mp3 player
or SD card.

Good luck

Which High Quality portable recorder should I get?

2007-06-30 Thread Damon
Hi.

I'm wanting to be able to make high quality recordings for broadcast and the

I believe the way forward these days is to get a solid state recording

enable you to record onto a Flash card. Or something like that.

Can anyone suggest a good model to purchase? And, of course, anything more

What are people on this list using or salivating over right now?

Thanks v much

hi there.

I had exactly this problem until recently. I had 512 meg of RAM and thought
it was enough with jaws too. Seems not for my system.

So here's what I did with help from list members here (thanks to those who

I increased my Virtual Memory from 1 gig to 4 gigs. At the same time, I
installed some new RAM in my machine. I now have 1.256 RAM

Don't know if increasing the virtual memory on its own would have sufficed.
Can I suggest that you try increasing the virtual memory today and see if
you still have the problem. If not then add some RAM.

I really hadn't believed that memory was my issue but it seems I was wrong.

Hope this is useful.

Re: CPU usage of Sound Forge vs Goldwave

2007-04-07 Thread Damon
Oh and here's something off Yahoo Answers explaining how to increase your
virtual memory. It's very simple, just takes a few keystrokes and costs
nothing.

right click on My Computer and go
down to where it says Properties. You should get an informational screen
with a bunch of tabs. Click on the tab that says Advanced. Where it says
Performance,
click on the Settings button. Click on the Advanced Tab again. Now you
should see a page that has your Virtual Memory, click on the Change button.
Here
you can edit how much virtual memory you want. I generally recommend setting
this to no more than 2 times the amount of actual memory you have. So if you
have for example 512 Megs of RAM, you would put in 1024 which equals 1 Gig
of Virtual Memory. Oh, by the way, this is instructions for Windows XP,

Do you have scripts for Sound Forge installed. I know this is a feature

scripts for this program. Press ins+q and see what scripts are loaded.
 If
Sound Forge scripts are loaded, press ins+h and there should be
 instructions.

Also make sure that screen echo is set to highlighted by toggling through

 Hi.

In sound forge, when I hit spacebar and listen to the audio I've got

the audio so I can't listen to it properly.

I hear my audio in the background with jaws saying zero zero zero 9

I've done an insert-S to turn screen echo to none .. but it still
 continues.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can stop jaws doing this?

I've got jaws 8 and I'm running soundforge 4.5 at the moment tho it also
happens at work with jaws 5, jaws 6 jaws 7 and soundforge 6.

 Appreciated.

Re: cleaning up audio

2007-03-14 Thread Damon
you an clean up sound using Goldwave on your PC. It's free.

You'd have to transfer the audio from your minidisk onto the PC. Then you
copy a tiny bit of the offending background sound to the clipboard before
cleaning it up. Whatever is in the clipboard gets taken out across the
entire recording. So this is good for background fuzz, high pitched whines
or things like that.

Depending on what you've got though, it can take out some of the higher
frequencies. Depends what you're after. Worth having a play with though
because it costs you nothing.

are you using a single channel sound card?
if so that might count for the studdering/ and the break up and stopping
 of
 the recording process.
if you want to try a different aproach, do the following,
 1. do insert f 2 and choos configuration mannager
 2. after you enter on the config do control shift d
 3. do alt s and then down arrow to synthizer and press enter tab over to
the check box that says allow wave files with software speech and make
 sure
it is checked. tab over to ok and press enter
 4. now either do alt f 4 and say yes to save the changes or do control s
 and
that also should save the changes
let us know if this works for you.

thanks for mailing back. Just to clarify, I am using FS scripts not
 snowbarger scripts.

This afternoon, however, I'm discovering that my problem isn't script
related. I've deleted the original FS scripts yet the system problems
 remain.

From time to time the audio stumbles, a Windows Ding sound occurs and
manipulating the file becomes a very very slow process because the
 computer
doesn't seem to be able to deal with it properly. I've had this problem a
few years now ... and just struggled through it with no one really able
 to
tell me what might be going on.

It seems that the audio starts to stutter and be badly handleable
 especially
after I've done some edits. Also, when recording, jumps occur - or rather
the recording appears to stop and start so that when you playback there
 are
2 second jumps in the audio.

I've no idea what's going on. I've got such a lot of editing work to do
 this
weekend I'm tearing my hair out. I had thought the solution might be to
 gget
new scripts from the snowman but it seems now these problems are
 definitely
within my computer and nothing to do with the scripts I've been running.

Once again, this afternoon, the ding appears again and again then jaws
eventually unloads itself after a lot of stuttering in the audio
 playback.
But once jaws is turned off entirely, scripts or no scripts, the
 soundforge
software seems to work pretty well.

So I'm having a clash between jaws and soundforge.

Could this be a memory issue? If anyone has any suggestions I'd
 appreciate
them. Are there some settings I could alter in soundforge regarding
 memory
 perhaps? Or in my system?

Sounforge jaws scripts

2007-02-10 Thread Damon
Hi.

I've been looking online at the Snowman's scripts for SoundForge.

I have jaws 5 on my computer. I'm aware it has some scripts for soundforge
that came from freedom scientific. I'd like to know if they are the same
ones that the snowman made? Did he make them for freedom scientific? Or are
they better?

I have real problems when running those freedom scientific scripts; it makes
soundforge unusable and I end up having to reboot. It's ok for a while, but
then windows error noises kick in and eventually jaws unloads itself.

Also. I want to buy the soundforge scripts for soundforge 4.5 for jaws 5
because I have some urgent editing work to do.

How does it work? Will i get them immediately from the snowman in an
automated way? Or will i have to wait a few days?

thanks

Re: Sounforge jaws scripts

2007-02-10 Thread Damon
thanks for mailing back. Just to clarify, I am using FS scripts not
snowbarger scripts.

This afternoon, however, I'm discovering that my problem isn't script
related. I've deleted the original FS scripts yet the system problems
remain.

From time to time the audio stumbles, a Windows Ding sound occurs and
manipulating the file becomes a very very slow process because the computer
doesn't seem to be able to deal with it properly. I've had this problem a
few years now ... and just struggled through it with no one really able to
tell me what might be going on.

It seems that the audio starts to stutter and be badly handleable especially
after I've done some edits. Also, when recording, jumps occur - or rather
the recording appears to stop and start so that when you playback there are
2 second jumps in the audio.

I've no idea what's going on. I've got such a lot of editing work to do this
weekend I'm tearing my hair out. I had thought the solution might be to gget
new scripts from the snowman but it seems now these problems are definitely
within my computer and nothing to do with the scripts I've been running.

Once again, this afternoon, the ding appears again and again then jaws
eventually unloads itself after a lot of stuttering in the audio playback.
But once jaws is turned off entirely, scripts or no scripts, the soundforge
software seems to work pretty well.

So I'm having a clash between jaws and soundforge.

Could this be a memory issue? If anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate
them. Are there some settings I could alter in soundforge regarding memory
perhaps? Or in my system?

...Damon

The FreedonScientific scripts are for SoundForge version 4.5. The
Snowbarger scripts work with all other versions of the program. Make sure
you are using the correct version for the proper SF build. I use the
Snowbarger scripts at home and at the office and they work extremely well.
I'm surprised that you are having difficulty.

SoundForge screws up my JAWS and PC (was: Sounforge jaws scripts

this is part 2 of my earlier plea. If anyone can help me out that'd be much
appreciated.
This afternoon, I'm discovering that my SoundForge problem isn't script
related after all - so ignore my earlier questions about scripts they're
irrelevant. I've deleted the original FS scripts yet the system problems

soundforge time elapsed

2007-01-15 Thread Damon
Hi. Soundforge has a marvellous clock which displays time elapsed. It's at
the bottom right of the screen I was playing around with a few JAWS cursor
thingies when I think I clicked on it, I tink it was on the word sample in a
pull down menu, and the clock has now changed itself to something other than
a clock and is most unhelpful.

How do I get it back to being a clock? I've no idea how long my tracks are
or what point in a file I'm in because of my actions.

am using Soundforge 4.5 with jaws.

Any help appreciated.

um, could this be an April Fool? Seems a bit convenient that 'seizure' gives
jaws a seizure.

Love you all

 Hi,

This message is sent to me privately. Haven't you received this? I don't
know about this. I really have no idea what is it all about. I hope if
 ever
this is true, this post would become a warning.

Watch your in-box for emails from either [EMAIL PROTECTED] or
[EMAIL PROTECTED] This address is sending out messages to email
 lists
that contain misspelled words that cause JAWS and Magic to crash. When a
specific misspelling or typo of the word seizure and have is
 encountered
by the Eloquence or ViaVoice synthesizer, the synthesizer will quit. This
can result in loss of speech and an error dialog.

JAWS and MAGic use Eloquence as the default software synthesizer.
OpenBook uses ViaVoice and is not effected.

To minimize the risk of the misspellings affecting you, a replacement file
is available for download for JAWS.
 List of 5 items
 1. Download the following file and save it in an easily accessible folder
 on
 your hard drive.

 ftp://ftp.freedomscientific.com/users/hj/private/WebFiles/Tools/ELOQMAIN.ZIP

 2. Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the location in which you saved the
.zip file and extract the contents.

 3. Copy the file you just extracted to the following folders:

 a) C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific\Shared\Eloquence\6.1
 b) And to the folder where your product is installed:

 - The default installation folder for JAWS 6.0 and later is C:\Program
 Files\Freedom Scientific\[PRODUCT]\[VERSION]. For example: C:\Program
Files\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\6.20 - Earlier versions of JAWS are by
 default
installed in the root directory of your hard disk in a folder with the
 same
name as the product. For example: C:\JAWS510, and so on.

 4. If you are prompted to overwrite the existing file when you copy the
dictionary file into the program folder, choose Yes.

 5. After adding this file, restart JAWS.
 list end

Freedom Scientific may update this patch as new information is discovered.
To insure that you always have the latest update, visit this
 page:

 http://www.freedomsci.com/fs_support/BulletinView.cfm?QC=911

You should also know that the original sender of these messages is saying
that this patch is a hoax, so ignore any emails making this claim.

Remember that only Eloquence is effected. If you use another voice, like
 the
ATT Natural Voices for example, you will not lose speech when
 encountering
these messages. Windows XP comes with some voices, called Sappi. These
voices aren't as clear as Eloquence, but bad speech is better than no
speech. Here's how you can use a Sappi synthesizer with JAWS.

With JAWS running and your email open, hit the keystrokes
insert+control+s. This will bring up a list of synthesizers installed on
 your computer. If eloquence
is your default synthesizer, it will come up first. Arrow down and you'll
hear options for no speech and Sappi. Other voices may be listed if
 you
 have them on your system.

Choose the voice you'd like to use and press enter. The chosen voice
 should
begin speaking. You can now use it to remove the effected email messages.
Note that some email lists were attacked by several hundred messages.

Follow these steps to remove the effected emails in eudora:

 List of 3 items
 1. After finding one of the Eloquence crashing emails, route your JAWS
 cursor to PC.

 2. Use insert right arrow till you come to any word in the subject line.

 3. Press alt+left mouse click and hit the delete key.
 list end

If there are over fifty messages scheduled to be deleted, you'll get a
message asking if you really want to delete these messages. Say yes and
 they
 are gone!

Outlook Express has a feature which will allow you to delete by subject,
 thread, sender and so on.

SoundForge panic please help!

2006-03-28 Thread Damon
Hi all, hoping someone can help me out with this rather urgent problem I've
got.

I'm sound editing and need to get my package in later today.

I am editing quite a lot of audio and so have done that trick where you go
into the special menu, done the 'treat as cut list' and 'play as cut list'
things.

After finishing my work I hit the 'convert to new' option and sat back
expecting all the edits to take place and spit out a new perfectly edited
file. But no. It did something weird.

After just a few seconds it opened a new edit window and weirdly instead of
having a finished edited version, what it had actually given me was a long
montage of all the bits that I didn't want, all the bits I had edited out.
It was a 2 minute file of all the edited out bits rather than a 20 minute
finished file with those bits missing.

This has never happened before.

Does anyone know what happened or how I can correct it?

I'm using Soundforge 4.5 and jaws 4.5 also.

Your help much appreciated.

Re: an accessible IPodder

2005-11-22 Thread Damon
Hi, isn't there an MP3 player that also has a speech program available to run
with it? I think it's called Rockbox or something? Does it work well? Rockbox,
I thinkk, works with another brand of MP3 player? Any thoughts on this
appreciated. That said, I'm getting on pretty well with the iPod shuffle.

.Hi Randy,
.hehehe, I think you actually mean an iPod, not an iPodder.
. iPodder is the now former name of one of the most popular
.podcast receiving programs out there.
.what you're thinking of is an mp3 player, not a device to download
.podcasts, I would guess?
.If it really is an iPod you're thinking of, the only one I can even
.moderately recommend to you is the iPod shuffle, and even then it's so
.limited in what it can do that I can't really recommend it much.
.So if you're looking for a good mp3 player, and you don't want to spend a
.ton of cash, try out some of the creative Muvo, spelled m u v o models. The
.problem with these mp3 players is they're really cool, but once people find
.out about them, the companies are coming up with new models, and someone
.has to take a chance on them and hope that they're accessible. The very
.best thing you can do is actually go to a store like Best buy, Circuit City
.or another place that actually sells the things, and have a look at them
.yourself, and see if you're even able to operate it, and ask questions
.about how to transfer songs to the player. most of them are USB based, so
.that sholdn't be a problem.
.But in general, i would really stay away from he Apple products.

Sonar: how do I turn the metronome off?

2005-06-16 Thread Damon

Hi,

as the subject line says really, how do I turn the tick tick ticking of the
metronome off?

I'm assuming that it doesn't actually get onto the recording of the
individual tracks?
