Thanks. I will check this out.

Personally, the best 2.1 setups I have heard in terms of sound quality are
the Logitech Z2300 system which isn't expensive at all, but really kicks
but. The other one is the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 but these are almost twice
the price of the Logitech Z2300. I am specifically referring to sound and
not convenience features like remote controls and additional inputs. A lot
of folks also seem to like the Boston Acoustics systems for sound quality.

   Sunshine,

Are you looking for a speaker system for your pc or for a home
theater setup? Or maybe both? How much are you looking to spend?
Home theater speaker setups can go as high as thousands of dollars.
There are also some very good pc speaker setups that can rival the
sound of some moderate priced home audio setups.

For my pc, I personally have a set of Logitech z5500 speakers. They
   are
   5.1
and sound terrific. They are THX certified and can really punch a

   $235

Hi,

Check out Polk. Mine are not top of the line but I have 5.1 and payed
about 2500 for them. 12 IN. sub; full range mains standing about48
IN.; center about 16 high 22 wide and 19 deep; rears about 18 high, 7
wide and 12 deep.

Sound grate on surround, DVD-a, sa-cd and stereo!

called a ceramic metal matrix diaphragm. I don't think they use paper or
plastic in them! The front is metal, but it has a wood grained cabinet, and
the backs of the speakers have a horn type. They have quite a frequency
range. I should say though that the price was in U.S. dollars. Hope this
helps!

Hi,

You can use gold=ldwave or soundforge, if you have either.

Thank you in advance!

Re: Software for Finding Dupe MP3 Files

2006-09-26 Thread Kevin Doucet
Hi,

Don't know about a program but you can make a temp directory drop to
a command prompt then copy all .mp3s to the temp directory, delete
the original directory and rename the temp one.

At 12:51 PM 9/26/2006 -0500, you wrote:

What about a program to look in a directory to find all the files that
aren't mp3? Of course it happens that if you open an mp3 in some editing
programs, it litters the directory with extra files I'll never need again,
but I want to get these out of there so when I choose the whole directory
with Winamp, it doesn't crash on the unplayable files.

  Hi list,

I am sending this to the list as some may be interested in purchasing
the Tactile VU Meter. It is a device about the size of a pack of
smokes. You can calibrate it to vibrate when the signal fed to it
exceeds a set point, thus alerting, tactually, when a desired level is
  reached.

Mention is made of a schematic one can use to make their own if one
wants. This person is willing to manufacture several if desired. The
price will be determined by the number of units to make. Please read
below and familiarize your self with the email's he and I traded on this
  topic.

I enquired about a product called the Tactile VU Meter.
Below is the series of emails between myself and Robert Armstrong,
who is the person offering to make them.

  To whom it may concern,
I belong to a group of blind musicians and am contacting you to learn
  how individuals

I'm sorry to say that we don't really manufacture the tactile VU
  meter. In four
or five years I think we've only made three or four, and that's
  counting the first
one that I made for my wife. Depending on how many you want, there
  are a couple
  of options
* If you want just one or two, then I'm willing to make them for
  you in my spare
time, but it might take a few months. If you have a friend who can
  build one, or
if you can do it yourself (don't laugh - I know blind people who can
  solder!) then
you're always welcome to assemble your own using the schematic and
  information on
  the web page.
* If you want a bunch, where a bunch is ten, twenty, or more,
  then we can talk
about a special manufacturing run. We could even talk about
  designing a new one
  - frankly, if I was going to do it again I'd do a lot of things
  differently.

Do I have your permission to share this with the emailing list I

Sure, absolutely. The more people who get together to buy one,
  the better deal
  we can get.

  Hi,

  I personally don't know much but what I do know is;

It's about the size of a pack of cigarettes with an on/off switch and
a tiny potentiometer for aligning it to a voltage. It has a stereo
mini plug for input and uses a pager motor to vibrate when a
  threshold has been exceeded.

I will add you to the list and send you the url when I get it.

Hi,

Found ut you have a choice from 4 styles

The Disney Mix Sticks come in one of four styles:
That's So Raven,
Disney Chrome,
Forever Princess
and Tinker Bell.

Personally, I will try to not get either Forever Princess
or Tinker Bell. . Either That's So Raven, and Disney Chrome,
  sounds alright.

just have saved one of my deay! It's really designed for the kiddos, but
who cares? It's not supposed to have a screen at all, has big buttons, and
you can get an SD card to expand memory, since it comes with only 128 meg of
memory. Anyone know anything about this thing? Oh, it's supposed to sell
for $50 or so.

  Greetings to all,
I am using the current version of ITunes with JFW 7.1 including the JAWS
  scripts.
When I open ITunes and insert a CD, the tracks come up ok. I see a label
just below the menu bar wich says import CD, however, clicking this or
even double clicking, doesn't produce any result. I can't see an option
for importing CDs in any of the menus.
Can anyone offer suggestions as to how to get the process to work?
  Thanks,
  Barry.

Re: the quality of a burned cd

2006-07-31 Thread Kevin Doucet
Hi,

digital is not at all like tape dubbing. That way of thinking was
correct for analog but with 0's and 1's if the copy is successful,
you have an exact doop.

At 08:28 AM 7/31/2006 -0500, you wrote:

What I would like to know is. If you copy a cd with Nero or another burning
program that you use. Okay now does it matter what speed you burn at as
long as it burns successfully? Also if you are copying an audio cd do you
loose any sound quality burning the disk at a faster speed then on a slower
burn setting? What I mean is say you make a copy of a friends cod and you
burn it at 16 x and then just for the heck of it you then burn a copy at 24
or 32 x. Now between those two copies well they be a better sounding copy
or doesn't it really matter just as long as the disk burn successfully? The
reason for asking it I am trying to find that best speed for me to burn at
and get the best sounding copies for what I have over hear. I can burn from
8 x up to 48 x on my burner. So thanks to all for the suggestions and all
of the help and I will look forward to reading any responses I get on this.

Re: Handheld Digital Recorder with USB Cable

2006-07-28 Thread Kevin Doucet
Hi,

I have heard of a Sony digital recorder which comes with dragon
nspeech to text software. With this device you record lectures or
most any thing with only one person talking and then the software
converts the speech to text. It does have a USB interface.

I found it at Independent Living Aides.
At 09:26 PM 7/27/2006 -0400, you wrote:

Greetings List,

I am looking for a hand held digital voice recorder with a U S B cable that
will let me transfer my recording to my computer. I want to use this type
of

device to take notes during my computer course training so I may down load
them to my computer and access the notes later to review the lesson.

One problem I am having is finding a device that has large function buttons
on the device as I have large hands and developing neuropathy issues and
need to be able to differentiate the feel or touch in between the buttons.

I know that there cassette recorders out there but find them rather large
and I don't want the hassle of the time limitations of cassettes and the
always flipping of the cassette when it runs out on one side and then have a
gap missing in the recording while ejecting and flipping the cassette over
to the other side and resume recording of the lesson.

I have tried the Olympus W S 100. I found the buttons too small and not
enough differential in the buttons in size and spacing to tell them apart.

Has anyone heard of a device that might fit my needs?

Thanks in advance,

Bob Batchelor

Been on there again this afternoon, downloaded two more meatloaf tracks,
three Billy Joel and three Ciara songs, they were all really quick again

Re: YAMAHA PSR3000 ACCESSIBILITY

I guess I confused myself. Is the numeric keypad on that keyboard?

Is there anyone who has this keyboard and who can give me any tips on how
to get started. And how accessible is it?

I will also perhaps at some stage subscribe to the midimag list and se what
help can be gotten there.

I see that in the newer keyboards, Yamaha has taken away the numeric
keyboard, which is a great pity!

Re: question about replay converter

Hi all!
I just got my copy of replay converter, and I'm having a slight problem. I
set some ogg files to convert to 64 kbps mp3 files. The conversion went off
without a hitch, so I went and listened to one of the files in Winamp.
Noticing that the file didn't sound as clear as it should have, I checked
the file info box, only to find that Replay converter had in fact only
converted my file at 32 KBPS instead of 64, which is what I had specifically
selected. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem? Thanks!

Re: Does DVD Need To Be Converted?

2006-06-01 Thread Kevin Doucet
Hi,

DVD players play DVD discs dependent on a region code. I have heard
some players do not matter which region code a DVD is and I have
heard roomer of software to strip a region code. But, I will not go there.

At 09:31 AM 6/1/2006 -0700, you wrote:

Hi, listers!
I am sorry for not knowing the appropriate terminology to put my question in.
In the days of VCR, when we would get a video-tape from UK or South Africa, we
use to convert it to a different system prior to watching it here in
USA. Similarly,
they had to convert it to their system when they got a video tape
from us before
they could watch it. I don't know what these systems are called, something
like, NTS to Pal or something similar.
My question is, do we still have to do similar conversion if we get
or send dvd
to or from UK or South Africa, before playing this DVD on our DVD-Player?
I could be wrong, but I was thinking that with so much advancement
in video-technology,
the need for conversion is simply eliminated!
I'm very sorry if I sound confusing and vague.
Thanks much!

Hi,

I don't know why the download was corrupted but while in the program
do an ault-v to get to the view menu.
Then tab to downloads and down arrow to BCT. At that point tab again

Hope this helps.

ok, read most of the user guide and I subscribed to blindcooltech.
The program checked the feed and supposidely downloaded the last episod.
The mp3 came corrupted, and besides I wish to download the last 30 or

Re: SoundForge panic please help!

Hi,

Did you do ctrl-z for un do before saving?

At 11:33 AM 3/28/2006 +0100, you wrote:

Hi all, hoping someone can help me out with this rather urgent problem I've
got.

I'm sound editing and need to get my package in later today.

I am editing quite a lot of audio and so have done that trick where you go
into the special menu, done the 'treat as cut list' and 'play as cut list'
things.

After finishing my work I hit the 'convert to new' option and sat back
expecting all the edits to take place and spit out a new perfectly edited
file. But no. It did something weird.

After just a few seconds it opened a new edit window and weirdly instead of
having a finished edited version, what it had actually given me was a long
montage of all the bits that I didn't want, all the bits I had edited out.
It was a 2 minute file of all the edited out bits rather than a 20 minute
finished file with those bits missing.

This has never happened before.

Does anyone know what happened or how I can correct it?

I'm using Soundforge 4.5 and jaws 4.5 also.

Your help much appreciated.

Re: Using DVD's on a Computer

2006-02-28 Thread Kevin Doucet
Hi,

Don't quote me on this but I believe the laser ray for DVD is smaller then the
laser ray for cd. This would allow for smaller burn patterns allowing for more
data storage.

Re: CDR Disks

2006-01-29 Thread Kevin Doucet
Hi,

If this disc is not re writable you will not be able to erase it.

I don't know about Itunes but if you are using some cd writing program like
Nero, you will only be able to add more files later if you do not finalize the
disc.

Hope some of this helps.

At 03:00 PM 1/29/2006 -0500, you wrote:

I am pleased to report that thanks to Kevin and Donna, I can now record/play
disks on my commercial CD player. Thanks so much for your help! Now I just
need to figure out how to deal with these disks.

In iTunes, when trying to add files to a disk that already contains a file
or files, the disk is ejected and I'm told this is not a blank disk. Well,
there is plenty of room for additional files so why can I not add them? I
realize the disk is not rewritable, but shouldn't I be able to add
additional files? Somebody told me that I could reformat the disks, and
would end up with a blank disk. Is that true? If so, how do I go about
formatting these disks? I will look around to find the answer to this, but
thought somebody may already know the answer. The reason I need to know is
that I accidentally put a file on a disk before converting it to WAV. Thus
I can't play that file on my CD player so want to get rid of it.
Additionally, iTunes is insisting that additional files can't be burned
since this disk is not blank. Well, c'mon there is only that one little
file so there is plenty of room. I'm going to try and put additional files
on this disk using Media Player so maybe that will do the trick.

I wonder how accessible the H10 series of players is.

Oh right! I completely forgot that li'l step! You press CTRL/Enter.
Then you can use your mouse cursor to monitor the status by looking at
the scrolling window at the bottom of the screen. Unfortunately, if
this is the first time you're writing MP3 tags in the Version 2
format, JAWS reads each file as it's being processed. If the tags
already exist, it doesn't do this for some strange reason.
Window-Eyes, on the other hand, doesn't speak at all until the job's
done. If you get a dialog at the end with errors and warnings, you
have lots of options as to whether to save it, dismiss it, copy it to
the Windows clipboard for later viewing, etc. You can tab through it
and look at the two lists of possible errors and warnings, then just
throw it away. Of course, if there are lots and lots of them, you may
wish to save the window which, as I said, you can in several different
ways.

Glad you liked the help and found it useful.

Surely. I assume we're talking about MP3 Tag Studio here, yes? If
so, read on.

First thing to do is put all your files on which you want to work in a
directory (single, hierarchy, it doesn't matter).

Second, when you installed MP3 Tag Studio, you should have checked the
box that says integrate into the command menu structure or shell or
whatever it's called. That way you will find an option on the File
menu in Windows Explorer for MP3 tag Studio. If so, go into that menu
and use the first item, Edit this directory in MP3 Tag Studio.

If you didn't do this, then you'll just run MP3 Tag Studio by pressing
the Windows key, P for Programs, then M until you hit MP3 Tag Studio
submenu or pulldown. Go into the submenu and find MP3 Tag Studio and
press enter to start it. Once inside, you must then browse to the
folder where your files are in the usual manner by pressing the Browse
button and navigating to the folder ihn question. Note that, to open a
folder, you have to position your mouse cursor on the foldername and
double-click it.

Third, now that we're inside MP3 Tag Studio with the proper folder
selected, it's time to set up a couple important things.

. Make sure the Use advanced options checkbox is checked.

. If your files are in several directories under the directory you're
in, make sure the recurse or use subdirectories checkbox is
checked.

. There's an additional checkbox to process both ID3 V1 and V2 tags.
If checked, both format tags are written and V2 is used to extract
data for file renames.

Fourth, about in the middle of the screen, three or four tabs down
from the top is a horizontal list of buttons you have to click with
the mouse or mouse function in your screenreader. One of them is
called Rename files from tags, one is called Tag files from
filenames. It is important to understand that these two options are
the opposites of each other. One will rename your files based on the
tags, one will tag them based on the names. The names must all be in a
certain format, which you specify about two or three lines down. The
screen says Field separator sequence, and right across from it on
the right side of the screen is an edit field. Click anywhere in the
edit field to bring the focus directly to it.

The output format is a series of tokens--special keywords enclosed in
less-than and greater-than signs, which tell MP3TS the format in which
you want the filename built or the format the filename is in to
extract tag information. Keywords are:

Tracknr -- Track number
Title -- track title
Artist -- Track recording or performance artist
Album -- Album name
Year -- Year the album was produced.
Genre -- Just about anything you want to put in as long as it's only
one word.
Comment -- any additional information to be provided
Trash -- Characters to be omitted when processing.
\ -- The backslash between directories in a path.

For instance, an output format specification for tagging MP3 files
from filenames could look like this:

Artist\Album\Tracknr - Title.mp3

This tells MP3TS when it finds a file to look back up the directory
structure two levels and get the artist field name from that
directory, then the album field from the name of the next directory
down, then the two-digit track number from the string of characters up
to the space dash space, then the title from the remaining set of
characters up to but not including, of course, the .mp3 part of the
filename.

Note you can also make this string by right-clicking on it and
choosing parts of it from the drop-down menu.

Note that you could theoretically use the same output format
specification to rename some files with good tags and put them in a
directory structure just like the one I just described--artist, then
album, then tracks within that album.

Fifth and finally, about the Trash keyword, this is useful where you
want MP3TS to ignore strings. For instance, in albums that span
discs, I break them up into their individual discs into directories
with names like Disc 1, Disc 2, etc. When I want to tag these files, I
use the Trash keyword to tell MP3TS to ignore this and drop down to
the next lower level to find the next thing, like this:

Artist\Album\Trash\Tracknr Title.mp3

would work if I had, say, a directory of albums by Cream, an album of
theirs called Wheels of Fire which is a two-disc album, and a
directory (Disc1, Disc 2) for each of the two discs, then the song
files in each directory.

If you'd like to hear an audio tutorial on this program, Don DJC
Coco did one for Main Menu a few years ago. Go to the ACB Radio
archives and give

Re: Digital Audio Transmission

2005-12-29 Thread Kevin Doucet
Hi,

The CD3O has a version which connects to a digital A/V receiver digitally. If
you have a wireless router on your music computer the transmission is sent to
the device connected to your receiver digitally also.

There's a lot of talk--always has been--on this list about
transmitting audio via FM and other RF spectra from one's PC to one's
home entertainment system. They all rely on analog signals, prone to
coloration by the intermediate equipment, or noise introduced by
interference. One methodology I discovered several years ago uses
Windows Media Player on XP and a handheld remote to voice-navigate a
database of scanned MP3 files. The sound is pretty good except for
the fact that there are no plug-ins for Windows Media Player like
Audiostocker or the Tomass Limiter (a.k.a. Sound Solutions) for
Winamp. Neither is there any crossfading dapability with the
aforementioned WMP product. This leaves you with a very wimpy-sounding
audio channel you really can't control (as much as you can with WMP,
anyway) with no dynamics processing or crossfading ability whatsoever.

Other than physically running cable around one's home, does anyone
know of something that will pick up either a stream or output from a
sound card and digitally transmit it to another location, preserving
audio quality? A device I purchased several years ago, capable of
receiving Internet radio, I thought would be the be-all and end-all
apliance. Unfortunately, development of the software for it has come
to an abrupt halt. The device, called a KISS (I forget what it stands
for) has the ability to do what I want, but there's no documentation
on how to make it work, how to set up a web page for the thing to go
to and read, and, of course, there's no speech with it at all. I
bought this thing well over three years ago, and I can't imagine
there's not something around these days that'll do what I want. Any
thoughts?

Re: Nero and problem burning audio cd

Hi,

You might try reducing the burn speed.

I am having a problem burning mp3s to an audio cd using Nero 6 Ultra

compilation, but my problem is noticeable on the first track It Came
upon A Midnight Clear where the end has a hiccup, where the world
gold sounds like go..old, without the dot of course g. I have
removed the silence between tracks, as well as check the item in the
cda settings tab, and still no improvement. I was making this thing
for my dear wife for Christmas, so I was kind of disappointed with
the results. This is my first time to make an audio cd with Nero. I
usually burn data cds.

BTW, the file doesn't have the problem. I even tried the cd on
another player, namely my Victor Reader Classic, thinking that Winamp
might be responsible for the problem. Also tried recording at 16X.
I'm totally out of ideas.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

help recording mp3s as audio cd

2005-12-19 Thread Kevin Doucet
Hi list,

I have some mp3s I want to burn to cd as an audio disc. When I copy them to a
blank cd then tell the windows cd writing wizard to make an audio cd, I am
directed to windows media player. I do not know how to use this program.
My question is does any one have an alternative method for burning mp3s to cd
as an audio cd?

Thanks.

Re: Wav Hammer in SF

2005-12-11 Thread Kevin Doucet
Hi,

That is probably a gate which you can use to set a threshold and any sound
under that level is just blocked allowing silence.
At 06:15 PM 12/11/2005 -0600, you wrote:

With sports on the radio, compression makes it so you hear more of the
announcer and less of the crowd, since stadiums are quite noisy. The crowd
will gradually increase in level while the announcer pauses a few seconds
but is pushed back down when he speaks again. In music, it tends to add more
punch to it so it sounds like the band is hitting their instruments harder
or playing louder without the distortion of simply turning the volume up.
What I hate is when the background hiss starts to keep rhythm to the music
when compressed and get loud right at the end. I wonder what radio does that
keeps that from happening as even CD's have noise in them.

 On Sat, 10 Dec 2005 19:56:32 +1100, you wrote:

Well, I haven't used it, but I understand it compresses the sound in some
way, something like normalizing.

Normalizing and compressing are two different functions and bear
absolutely no relationship betwixt and between. Compression is the
art, and I do mean art, of making soft parts loud and loud partrs soft
so you don't have to keep reaching for the volume knob. Normalization
is simply maximizing the amplitude, or volume, of a waveform such that
its loudest point is never any louder than a pre-determined value
(usually 0dB, some folks push it to +3dB). No other aspect of the
waveform is changed, it's just moved up in whole so that its peaks
brush up against that arbitrary value of loudness.

Uses for normalization: Recordings made too low in volume. Should be
normalized to at least 90% of full wave height, leaving a little room
for harmonic distortion which could produce voltage levels that would
or could overdrive a sound-reproducing device, such as the final
output stage of an amplifier, or even a speaker itself, but not
register on an oscilloscope as being louder than the specified
normalized value (see above). When normalizing a waveform, it's
always a good idea to leave some what's called head-room for just this
 case and these conditions/circumstances.

Uses for compression: Imagine hearing a recording of a meeting where
the main speaker was clear as a bell, but the audience who may have
asked questions were down in the sonic mud. Compression would
temporarily raise the volume level so the soft parts, the far-away
audience members, can be heard when they speak. Then, when the main
speaker starts up again, the volume level is pushed back down so the
main speaker doesn't overdrive the recording or playback equipment.
Understand that normalization will not help in this case because
normalization brings every sound up in volume by the same amount,
while compression changes the volume level on the fly, as much or as
little as needed, depending on the characteristics of the waveform.

 Hope this helps.

As yet, I haven't been able to study the manual but I'm told that the
recorder features a html interface similar to those found on say the
Linksys Wireless Gateways or Hp fax devices, this interface allows
the user to edit chapter titles, playlists of recorded material and
I'm told, set menus and functions of the recorder itself and its this
last point that I'm personally very excited about for if it is indeed
true, then it means that the unit will be accessible and we can
bypass the displayed menus on the TV screen etc, not to mention
getting the full functionality that connecting a video recorder to a
comptuer can provide.

Hi,

The sound board option can be used for recording any sounds played on your
sound card, which would enclude internet streeming or playing source
material on your computer.

Joanne,
As i understand it, the software option applies regardless of whether the

is for recording from an external source such as a stereo. If this is what
you want to do others can advise you of optimal settings, but assuming you
have already learned to record online streams, you should be able to record
from a bookmarked stream in Winamp or whatever without any additional
tweaking. hth.

Re: iPodder downloading question

2005-10-07 Thread Kevin Doucet
Hi,

Some times only a limited few shows are available for automatic download,
which would cause the results you are having. However, if you go to the
program URL many times you can download directly shows which you can't get
with an aggregator.

Hope this helps.

Hi Listers,

I've been using the iPodder Podcast catcher for a week now, and have
what should be an easy question for you. Maybe I should say, this
really should be easy to figure out, but here goes.

I am trying to download beyond the 14 Podcasts listed from the KFI
Tech Guy, but I can't seem to get beyond the 14 Podcasts listed. I
know that there are programs as far back as January, but when I try
the catchup option, I don't get anywhere. Maybe I just don't have a
very solid understanding of the concept or something g. Anyway, any
help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Larry

Hi Bryan. You might want to go to JFWLite. I think you'll be able to find
it there, as well as other interesting programs. Hope this helps.

 Hi folks,
I wonder where the snowman's home page has gone?
Do you know if the jaws scripts for the audio program Sound Forge 8 is
stille available, and where they can be found?
The page you find on google is not reachable.

 Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Total recorder should do it. You need to play the annalog sound generated
from a midi file then record it in a .wav file.

Hope this helps.
