 Very interesting inded. Thanks steve

Now if I can just get scripts for the chat window in Skype 3.0 to work
 properly, this would be wonderful.

At the moment I find that from skype 3.0 it is actually easierto use the
 programm without th scripts.

Skype 3.2 Sets New Standard for Sound Quality

Posted by Jim Courtney on March 28, 2007 09:39 AM

When Skype Vice President Stefan Oberg spoke at VON Canada last year his
theme was how Skype's goal was to be Better Than a Phone. To make his
point he mentioned how even the simple task of plugging in a headset
 (often
on the rear of a desktop PC or in a laptop docking station) still
 frustrated
Skype product managers and engineers as an ease of use issue.
Otherwise background noise and echo effects made conversation difficult at
best, if not impossible, when using the basic speakers and microphone
 supplied with a PC.

Today, with the release of Skype 3.2 beta, you no longer need to have that
headset (or handset) to achieve top-notch voice quality in your Skype
 voice
conversations. You can make excellent quality Skype calls using your
 basic
PC speakers and microphone. While not mentioned in the Skype Beta blog
post, if you look at the Release Notes for Skype 3.2 beta 53, you will
 find:

 feature: Skype's own audio codec
 feature: Skype improved conference mixer
feature: Skype Jitter Buffer and concealment
 feature: Skype audio preprocessing components

What this all adds up to is a new standard for voice quality in VoIP
 calls.
Skype has internally developed its own codecs, based, I suspect, on the
Camino Networks technology Skype acquired last April, such that calls
to/from a Skype 3.2 client can be made simply using the microphone and
speakers that come with any laptop or desktop PC.
Echo cancellation and noise cancellation capabilities in these codecs make
your Skype calls sound like a call with headsets or phone handset but
without the hardware. As a result you can have handsfree operation of
 your
Skype calling while not cluttering up your physical desktop with
 additional
hardware. The sole reason for using traditional USB handsets will be
privacy; speaker phones may still have some application in board room
environments. PC Free phones will continue to have their role in getting
Skype available throughout the home or small office.

I first heard about this new capability from a beta tester a couple of
 weeks
ago. He had to make a call from a booth conference room on the floor at
CeBit 2007. While surrounded by four walls, with no ceiling, sound from
 the
conference came in over the top. Yet, using the Skype 3.2 client he
successfully made a business critical call using Skype back to parties in
North America simply using the mic and speakers inherent to his laptop.
This morning I tested out the Skype
3.2 client using simply my laptop (actually my Altec Lansing USB speakers
 to
enhance sound power that could create echoes) and the microphone from my
headset. (Need to call Dell for a service call on my laptop's built-in
microphone.) I placed the mic about midway between the speakers and made
five different calls -- four using Skype at the other end while the fifth
was on a mobile phone via SkypeOut. All four Skype parties found the call
quality superb while the call to the mobile phone had poorer but quite
 acceptable quality
-- probably due to the terminating mobile phone infrastructure. One of the
 called Skype parties found it

Well, I did post the review on Amazon where one can submit a review of the

something to the effect that the mannual provided on the cd rom which came

features, and no step by step instructions. Another bad move, folks!

Sometimes I think we should put up a product review web site and put
 reviews
like this there for all the world to see. That might get the attention of

Thanks for that very useful review, Joy.

First I'll give the pluses. What I consider a plus for this item is the
direct plug and play access without any stinkin' proprietory software to
muck around with. That, to me, is more a must than a plus!
Second plus, although, not necessarily anything real big or important, is
the fact one can take this equipment apart and just use the guts of the
unit, when separated from the battery pack, as a thumb drive.
Third plus and must, is the multiple level directories one can work with,
the way mp3 players should work in mine humpble opinion, not this single
directory junk where the device does it's own numbering system according
 to
when each file was loaded into the player. That's a big fat minus where
 the
Ipod shuffle, or any other device like that is concerned. Fourth plus is,
of course, the space at 2 gigabytes.

Now for the minuses, which are unfortunately way more than the plusses.
Firstly, there are only four buttons or switches on this device, volume up
and down, scroll switch, and play/power button.
So, right there, you know that the scroll switch is going to be the main
controlling factor on this unit as far as moving from track to track, or
going through menues which I'll get to in a bit.
Secondly, no audio feedback, of course, unless you stay in Music or
 maybe
recorded tracks, and you turn the device on by holding the play/power
button for roughly five seconds, then wait for the unit to boot up, which
can take upwards of 12 seconds, depending upon how much data is stored.
As for the menues -- which are accessed by pressing the scroll switch --
they do not default. So, even if you memorize the menues, you have to
remember where the heck you left off at. So, if you left off at
 Microphone,
there's a possibility that once you manage to turn the device on, you
 might
be continuing the recording. Oh, to select what you want in a menu, you
 press the scroll switch again.
And, of course, there is no audible monitor through the headset when you
record. So, of course, you have to ask a sighted person if the recorder
 is
 going.
Oh, speaking of having a sighted person help, what is with these stupid
symbols rather than actual written text stating where one is in the
 menues?
Furthermore, what is with this bad habit of these devices that stay in a
menu for no more than maybe 5 seconds at the most? For someone trying to
help a blind person out, or for someone with difficulty with focus issues,
that just does not work, people! Heo!
As for recording, the quality is poor. Now, I'm taking into consideration
the fact that the recordings are being done in low bit-rate wave files.
However, the recording volume -- or maybe it's the volume setting used for
recorded tracks -- is very much lacking.

So, here's my final grading of the MuVo V-100 by Creative.
I give it an A for concept, an A for space,, However, for ease of use and
 accessibility, I give it a D minus.
Why a D minus rather than an F for accessibility? Well, as long as you
 stay
in music and as long as you don't accidentally press the scroll switch
before moving it left or right to go from track to track, or for scanning
tracks, then you're okay. Secondly -- for folks who are left handed, one
can go into the settings menu and rotate the display. I guess that can
actually be a help if a blind person is getting help from a sighted person
and it makes it easier for the sighted person to se the screen.
Creative seemed to have had a neat

Well, tate, I haven't really studied it in deatail. It does have several
menus, including an FM radio. But the first thing that does come up is the
mp3 player. It has one of those little displays where you can find play,
stop, backward and forward and I think an enter button, all arranged in that

standard little square you see a lot on displays now. As with all the
cheaper mp3 players, you can't mark where you've left off in a book like you

can with a bookport, but if you just want to get at those wma-drm files and
you don't mind forwarding to find your place, the Ilo is a way to go. It
uses a standard maybe tripple A battery, I think. I haven't messed with it
for awhile, like I said.

The Disney products (the Disnye Mix Stick) is easier to use and cheaper yet,

and you can buy an SD card for it, which you'd probably want to do since it
only comes with 128 meg memory. The Ilo comes with a gig emory. I don't
think it has a place for an SD card, if I remember correctly.

What features do you want it to have? Ultimately, I think one of the best

is Book Port, but then you may not be looking for a multi purpose device
such as Book Port. The great thing about it is that it is totally
accessible, and since it uses flash memory cards up to 4 gigabytes you can

have a lot of music with you, and have more than one card so it is easier
to have a large library of music, books, etc. and play them all on one
 unit.

At half the price of the Book Port is the Olympus WS320M digital recorder
and MP3 player. It plays both MP3 and WMA, records only in WMA. It is
very small, runs on 1 tripple A battery, and can store 1 gigabyte of
files. It has a USB interface that makes copying files to it a very easy
 thing to do.

There are lots of others that one could consider, and I'll just say these
two happen to be my personal favorites because I own and use both of them
 regularly.

What features do you want it to have? Ultimately, I think one of the best
is Book Port, but then you may not be looking for a multi purpose device
such as Book Port. The great thing about it is that it is totally
accessible, and since it uses flash memory cards up to 4 gigabytes you can
have a lot of music with you, and have more than one card so it is easier to
have a large library of music, books, etc. and play them all on one unit.

At half the price of the Book Port is the Olympus WS320M digital recorder
and MP3 player. It plays both MP3 and WMA, records only in WMA. It is very
small, runs on 1 tripple A battery, and can store 1 gigabyte of files. It
has a USB interface that makes copying files to it a very easy thing to do.

There are lots of others that one could consider, and I'll just say these
two happen to be my personal favorites because I own and use both of them
regularly.

RE: broadcasting question

2006-05-28 Thread Tate Luck
The bullet for FM is multi-channel. When Fm can have two to eight stations
on one frequency and it is free, XM and friends will not be such a great
idea.

The radios are coming down, you will be able to get one for 75 buks in the
next year.

In my opinion fm iboc will do well as receiver prices come down and
multi-channel capability comes to pass. I think you hit the nail on the
head regarding am iboc. In the future things may get better on the am

when the hybrid am iboc will be replaced by full digital. I think the

don't work for CC or NPR, AM IBOC is a real bad deal for AM audio and the
IBOC audio sounds like a bad Windows Media feed, but there has been too
 much

The problem with DAB is that nobody can agree to a Northamerican
 standard.
We all know what happened to AM stereo. The consumer will ultimately
determine whether DAB is going to take off or not. I honestly can't see
people running out to buy new receivers. What you will see is that
 there
will be a move to the FM band with all stations gradually converting
 over
to DAB. There will be no need for announcers on a fulltime bases, as
 song
title, artist, and other information will be displayed on a screen in
 much
the same format as is being used with XM and Sirious. I can see
 commercial
content going this way as well, as many of us see commercials as an
intrusion as apposed to providing a service Talk radio will survive,
 but
 the
future of commercial music stations looks bleak. The shift is towards
downloading of MP3 files, and blog newscasts. With digital broadcasting
 it
will be possible for you to customize the delivery of information
 according
to your needs. If you want to hear the 8:00 AM news at 8:15 that will
 be
possible simply by entering an assigned code on a keypad. You will
 probably
have a choice on who will deliver the news to your receiver. The
possibilities are limitless. Another plus is that you will be able to
 listen
to NPR from coast to coast without missing a beat. You will simply move
 from
one cell to another, and the radio will do that for you automatically.

 Subject: broadcasting question

 hi list,
I'm interested in going into radio broadcasting. I know there are
 people out
there who have done it, so i emailed a local school that teaches a
 course
for broadcasting. here is the reply I received when i asked about a
 blind
 person attending.

Hi Brandon, sorry about the delay in getting back to you.
 Unfortunately this
is not a program that is suitable to the visually impaired. Mainly
 because
the cost of accomodating the expense of required equipment would
 exceed
 over
$500,000.00. Not only the expense, but radio stations and their
 corporate
ownership will never incur such an expense, nor is it feasible to
 create a
studio suitable for this. I understand your disappointment, however,
wanted to be very honest with you regarding the reality of this. I
 truly wish
 you
well in all of your future endeavors and if there is anything you
 require
further information on, please feel free to email or call me. Once
 again,
thank you for your interest in CSMB.

 Regards

 Jacquie Hammond
 President/CSMB

Now what is this 500 thousand dollar cost all about? I would be able
 to, as
far as I know and I did visit a radio studio to use the mixing
 boards,
 and
they use windows software for the playlist editing, so it would be a
simple matter of creating scripts. I'm quite curious to see, has
 anyone got
 any
 clues?
 thanks
 Brandon Hicks

I have been using Sound Forge for years, but the way you guys talk I
 need to try this one.

 Is it multi track?

I have Sound forge 6 and with the Snowman scripts I get the ability
to move through the file with the sound responding as I move. Will it do
 this?

Does it any Daisy Creating ability?

I guess I should go read the info on the web pages, but does it have
 any CD ripping/ burning ability?

 Hi Gang:

Has anyone been able to script JAWS so that one can audibly travel around
 a
GoldWave work space via the cursor keys and the PageUp-PaGeDown keys as
 one
can in SoundForge? This is one of the great weaknesses in GoldWave.

I have tried to use the same scripting process used in Soundforge with
relation to the GoldWave View to End option; however, the GoldWave
 program

itself does not respond well to this scripting technique.

If anyone can shed some light as to how to resolve this problem, I would
appreciate it all over the place.

 Thanks gang.

all the radio stations around here are using cool edit pro still.
anyways, I dont happen to have the scripts on hand, but i just want to

inform you that yes, with jaws scripts the cool edit pro software is
very accessible. you said your doing this in studio, do they have

Hi Kerry. You realise that you can use whatever you want to, if you're
making these ads from home? All you have to do is give the station the
files in the format they want, you don't need to use their software if
there's something you're more familiar with. Wav and MP3 files are all
the same.

cool edit pro is a very nice sound editing software. if they are
still using cool edit pro, then they are a little out of date, and it

 must be normal for
radio stations to not have the most up-to-date software; all the
radio
stations around here are using cool edit pro still. anyways, I dont
 happen
to have the scripts on hand, but i just want to inform you that yes,
with
jaws scripts the cool edit pro software is very accessible. you said
your
doing this in studio, do they have jaws? and what did you say you
were
 going
 to edit?

 Hi Listers,
I was wondering has any one heard of Cool Pro Edit? I am going to
be making adds for a local radio station and that is what he wants

me to use. Does it work with jaws? If not what can I tell him? I

Hi folks,

Forgive my ignorance about these things, but I am still new to the audio
side of things. I've begun ripping my cd's to 320kbps mp3. Now, I want
to be

able to make smaller mp3's from these files, say 192kbps mp3's. I have
winamp pro, Windows Media Player, and real player 10 on my system. Will
any of these programs allow for the conversion? If not, is there a free
program for changing bitrate? And again, if there isn't a free
alternative, what is the best and of course, most accessible program.

Thanks,
Scott

Links? I'm not sure because my two unpopular/untraditional programs here
came from my friends. I have an idea about where can you get them but, I
will still make sure about that. One named switch. It's a small file and
its main feature is to convert WMA to mp3/wav or otherwise. But, if the
file is already in mp3 format, you can just rip it again and set that
bitrate thing to your chois. The other one is the CDX. I'm not sure if
you have an idea on this. But, unfortunately, the files should come from
the CD.

This is a sponsored message. Such messages are sent very occasionally.
Please feel free to delete.

Since I stopped doing main Menu, a lot of people have urged me to
produce downloadable tutorials. So in my weekends and evenings, I've
been putting my first together.

One of the first issues I had to confront was how to secure the content.
I investigated a number of options, and eventually came to the
conclusion that all of them will disadvantage the people I want to help
most, those who struggle with computers. So I've come up with a concept
I am calling trustware. It's simple, the only thing stopping you from
sharing the tutorial with your friends, is trust. It takes a lot of
research, time and energy to put these tutorials together. I've tried to
keep the price low in order to keep the price within everyone's reach.
So if you like the tutorial, and you'd like to see more produced, please
support this effort by not passing it on, and by encouraging others to
buy. If I'm being naive and I only sell one or two copies, then
obviously this will be the only one I produce. So now the details of
this first tutorial.

Jonathan Mosen's Get going with Google is a comprehensive two hour audio
tutorial unlocking the secrets of the world's most powerful search
engine.

Have you ever wondered how to search for something on Google while
excluding certain common results? Did you know Google can be used as a
dictionary, a calculator and a means of converting everything from
currency to weight? Did you know Google can show you who is linking to
your blog or other web site?
Did you know Google has a thesaurus to help you get the most out of
searching? Jonathan Mosen's Get Going with Google unlocks the full
potential of Google, with the access technology user in mind.

Whether you use a screen reader, a portable device or a stand-alone
accessible browsing solution, Jonathan Mosen's Get Going with Google
puts you in control of the billions of pages on the world wide web.
References are made to JAWS and Window-eyes commands throughout the
tutorial, but instructions are also given so that it's easy to translate
them into whatever product you use.

Talking you step by step through every keystroke, you'll find just how
easy it is to become a Google master. Get exactly the search results you
want with Jonathan Mosen's Get Going with Google.

Spending two hours mastering Google will save you time and frustration
as you take control of getting exactly the results you want.

This well researched guide to unlocking Google's secrets normally sells
for $14.95. But as an introductory offer, Jonathan Mosen's Get Going
with Google can be yours for only $9.95. Pay with any major credit card
through pay Pal, and instantly download and listen to your copy of Get
Going with Google in
MP3 format, suitable for playback on your PC or any portable device.

You've been searching for the keys to unlock Google's full potential,
and now the search is over!

You can read about Get Going with Google and listen to a sample at

Mine was off as well, but enabling it still results in the odd sounds
popping up in certain songs. It doesn't occur on all discs, and even
on
 the
cds where it does happen, it only seems to happen on certain tracks,
but I
still can't seem to get rid of it. I may have to try burning to an mp3

RE: god, I hope this isn't true

2006-03-10 Thread Tate Luck
I agree that serious has better programming. Why do you think that
Sirius's system blows? I have XM and serious. The audio on the serious
boxes I think sounds better. The truth is that neather of them sounds
great.

 Hi TJ
From what I hear, XM plans to start 4 more channels which will be
commercial-free music ones to off-set the ones that do. That way
we'll still have the same number of commercial-free ones as we did
before.
I don't know when these channels will launch or the formats they'll
have, but that's the information that's out there floating around on
the
 net.

This really isn't that big of a deal you know. If there are going
to
be spots, and it looks like there are, it'll probably only be 2 or
3
minutes an hour tops, and that's definitely better than the amount
you get on commercial radio. These channels are expendable really,
because they're run by clear channel. if the commercials bother
you
that much, simply find other xm channels to listen to that don't
  run commercials.

Hello, go to
www.ACBRadio.org
then to on demand, then to main menu, and search for my name down the big
page. Find where it says NTrack, and click on the show date. Use the B key
to skip to my segment.
Thanks a lot.

RE: music scheduler

2006-03-05 Thread Tate Luck
Bob,

I use Power Gold at work. If I use the mouse keys inJFW I can make logs with
out many problems.

This might cost to much for some people. Because I am programming three FM
stations I need more robust software.

I hope this helps.

Subject: music schedula

What type of music schedulers are blind and visually impaired people using
these days apart from studio play list? What type of accessible play list is
ACB radio using for their announcers? Obviously they are using an accessible
recording software package as well. Perhaps someone on the list just might
have the answer. I know a number of commercial broadcasters that are using
off the shelf music schedulers. Music schedulers don't have to be very
complicated as long as they can play music, commercials and jingles
systematically in rotation. Has anyone tried virtual DJ? If so, is it
accessible?.

RE: That new multi-track program reaper???

2006-03-05 Thread Tate Luck
Matthew,

I got it to read the keyboard short cuts, by going in too the help and going
in to the keyboard short cuts and holding down the control+down arrow. It
red the keys pretty well.

I could not find out how to arm a track for recording.

Win did you revue N-Track? Is there a English web sight?
 Thanks

Hello, I couldn't get the keyboard shortcuts area to display after I pulled
down the help menu. I didn't know where to start with Reaper. Try N-Track,
from
www.NTrack.com
I've worked with the developer, Flavio, through e-mail to make the program
more accessible. I also did a review for the program on Main Menu.
Unfortunately, with all of the things I'm working on now, I don't get to use
the software much, but hopefully that will help you get done what you need
to get done.
Thanks a lot.
