Re: A version of Skype that works with Win 98 SE?

2005-08-10 Thread Ann
Even the latest version works with Windows 98 all though it isn't officially
supported. But, I believe that the later the version you use, the more
memory you really do need in your system.

Hi list. Is there still a version of Skkype that will work with Win 98
 SE?
I use Win 98 SE and a dial-up modem, and JFW 4.51, and my PC is 333 MHz
 and
64 megs of RAM. I see the current version needs 128 megs of ram, and
Win
2000 or XP; I'm interested in it but don't want to go buy a new PC just
so
 I
can use the current version of Skype. Any info on a version that works
 with
Win 98 SE and 64 megs of RAM, and works with JFW 4.51, would be
 appreciated;
   thanks.

   Sincerely, Peter Russillo

Re: A version of Skype that works with Win 98 SE?

2005-08-08 Thread Bruce Toews

Here's the official word from the Skype knowledge base:

Can I use Skype with Windows 98 or Windows ME?

Because it hasn't been fully tested, we have not yet certified Skype for
use with these operating systems. Skype may work with Windows 98 (Win98)or
ME but
we cannot yet guarantee compatibility. Some WinME/9x video (and possibly
others) drivers tend to use 100% of processor for their needs for
relatively long
periods of time. This can cause the audio quality to degrade
significantly. In addition, WinME/9x does not offer full unicode support,
which means that
some things may not display properly. Skype does not work on WinNT at the
moment. We may support these platforms in the future and will make any
future

announcements on our website.

Yep, if you want skype to work properly, it is time for you to ditch that
dinosaur of an operating system and upgrade to XP.
