Re: Bit rate and sampling rate

2008-12-25 Thread Jerry Richer
You can think of bit rate while the audio is playing back. It's the
rate at which the bits are being processed, like 128 KBPS or 128 thousand
bits per second.
A CD quality wave file plays back at the bit rate of: 1378.125 KBPS.
Sampleing rate is the rate at which a audio file is sampled while
making a digital recording of it..

This is ludicrous, I know. However, please help me to keep
these straight because I know when and how to change them, I
just cannot remember which is which. Which is the bit rate,
and which is the sampling rate?

 Thanks.

OOPS! The frequency is measured in kilohertz, NOT kilohertz per second. 1
hurtz = 1 cps.

Don,

Imagine a sound wave front coming directly at you, like an ocean wave. In
order to construct a digital representation of this analog phenomenon,
through time, you need to do two things: you must divide the wave front up
into discrete lanes (as it were), along its width; and you must measure the
state of each of these lanes, over and over again.

The number of 'lanes'/bits into which you divide the wave front at any given
second is the band width/bit rate, measured in kilobits per second. The
number of times you sample/measure the state of each lane, in a given
second, is the sample rate/frequency, measured in kilohertz per second.

Blessed Be, Namaste,
