Oh, yeah, that makes sense. Heh I had hughesnet for a while, about, a month.
I switched back to dialup. Heh do you have the download limit there? What do
you think about hughesnet? If I streamed with the service I was paying 69
dollars a month for I could listen to music without buffering. I heard from
a friend of mine using hughesnet now that they hit their download limit by
listening to streaming music. rofl must have been high quality stuff.

 Hi,
Maybe it's because I am using Hughes which is a satellite server--maybe
originating in the states--I don't know.
 Vinny
P.s. Try WWW.billsparks.org and try a station like KEX in Portland which
 uses the cc tuner.

Why block. Legal reasons, I suspect.
Or it could be the issue of royalty payments.
Things like this aren't just done to inconvenience folks; they have their
reasons like with most things.
One may not be happy about this, but this is done elsewhere as often
pointed out with some BBC channels.

Re: trying to listen to this station

2008-05-31 Thread Larry Naessens
What you're saying makes sense, Mike. If I lead you to think that i believe
CC was trying to inconvenience anyone or any group of anyones, then I
unintentionally mislead you. I really don't believe that at all, nor do I
pretend to know what's behind their decision to block streaming access
outside the States. But if there were prohibitive costs associated with
streaming U. S. product outside American borders, why wouldn't it affect
other large radio station groups? Take CBS for instance, which has, of late
been invoking many cost cutting moves, while still streaming world wide. Or
how about Citadel? Lots of stations, all streaming worldwide.

Really my comment was just sort of an off the cuff thing which is probably
dangerously close to being off topic. But the point does remain. Of all the
American megga-station groups that stream CC is, to my knowledge, the only
American company that restricts the ability to access. If that is incorrect,
I would be pleased to stand corrected.

Meanwhile, ou clearly like and enjoy aspects of how CC streams. And by all
means, their many streams are available to you, so why not enjoy them. I was
just offering another point of view concerning CC practices. The why that
surrounds those practices is someone else's to sort out. Their reason may
well be perfectly legitimate. Still, as I'm sure you can understand, those
of us who are left out have little reason to applaud them. For us, Clear
Channel stations are silent.

Really? Clear Channel streams work for you within Canada? That would be
great news. I've never known anyone from here in Canada who receives
anything but a Clear Channel page apologizing for the fact that they can
 no
longer stream their product to Canada. Could you offer a link to a station
using the CC Tuner that can be accessed in Canada?

 Thanks.

I can only make some intelligent guesses as to why CC blocks its streams
internationally and other major U.S. players don't.

(1) Their attorneys have advised them to do this. Keep in mind that
different lawyers have different legal opinions. These opinions may also
be a result of a company's past history or aversion for lawsuits.

(2 cc MAY HAVE reached an agreement with certain royalty organizations to
do this in exchange for some concession.

Short of a definitive statement from the company, all we can do is play a
guessing game which really isn't all that productive.

Out of curiosity, have you seen the same blockage with talk, news and
sports stations as with music ones?

so far- which is a good thing. These stations have been music stations.

2008-05-31 Thread Larry Naessens
Yes, the same message pops up on sports, news, and talk stations as well,
which I guess negates my theory that the conflict is music related.

A message pops up which states that they can not serve my Ip address because
it is in Canada. They also offer a form in which you can declair yourself to
be U. S. military or dispute their claim that you live in Canada. They offer
no exceptions for people like me who are U. S. citizens with permanent
residency status in Canada.

As I have seen no outlet for inquiry to CC, I can't ask the question as to
why they're doing what theh're doing. Now, when I encounter a link with CC
Tuner in the address, I just skip it. And fortunately, there are plenty of
less restrictive choices out there.

Here is the audio link for this station:

www.939online.com/cc-common/streaming_new/index.html?refreshed=yes

As it turns out, this one is easy as it is a station that's part of the Clear
Channel extended family of stations.
--

Currently, all these stations, those that stream, append the following suffix
to their main website address:

/cc-common/streaming_new/index.html?refreshed=yes

And I just verified that they indeed are streaming at the time I am writing
this.

Well, as you are Canadian, I can see why you wouldn't be a CC fan given
that they lock you out.
What I do like about Clear Channel are two things:

(1) They have made a concerted effort to get a good number of stations
streaming

(2) They use a consistent url structure so it is easy to confirm whether
or not a given station streams.
More and more companies are adopting this approach which, I view, as a
positive.

2008-05-30 Thread Larry Naessens
You're right Mike, those sound like positives and if I lived where you do, I
would probably view them more in the same light. Still, , as you said, I do
live in Canada, so I've blocked by the company from experiencing those
advantages firsthand. To me, Clear Channel is a company that chooses to shut
non-Americans out when it comes to listening, and for a lot of us, that's
where it begins and ends. But I'm probably not the most positive person to
speak on the subject of commercial radio. These days, whether it comes to
streaming or to listening off line, I find that XM is my choice more often
than not. Right now I'm listening to the Cubs game with a lot more clarity
than I would receive from MLB.com. Unfortunately, today the quality of the
broadcast is much higher than the quality of the game, but you can't win 'em
all.
