Clint, the new ani cursor patch was what broke the Realtek software. There really wasn't much of a choice but to install it. I posted a url for the hotfix for security update last night but it never came through to the list. I must have used some proscribed word. The hotfix installs a new

Yes, that update was a disaster, and I can't thank Ben Moore enough for his help. Now, the big question. Clint is right about the potential for serious problems with Microsoft hardware updates, but on the other hand, the patches do close security holes. That leads to the following questions to

Hello, Graham, Ben Moore posted a different link for the patch for the patch. I used his link, and it fixed the problem. Is there any way of knowing whether this Microsoft hotfix is the same? I assume that there is no reason to use this link as well as the other one. If it ain't broke (any

IMO, auto updates should never be on. I want CONTROL over my PC's, and I do NOT need M$ hand-holding and letting THEM decide what I need (which is everything according to them). The majority of patches are not even needed if you use a firewall, or if the affected Service is turned off.

They are the same thing, David. MS only installs critical updates automatically, never hardware/driver updates. But I still have my updates set to tell me when updates are available. I never let MS install anything automatically. Ben Moore -Original Message- From: [EMAIL

If it's been a long time since you installed the OS, then a reformat would speed things up. Diagnostic programs frequently report erroneous info. -Clint God Bless Clint Hamilton, Owner http://www.OrpheusComputing.com http://www.ComputersCustomBuilt.com

How you defrag the hard drive affects speed as well. By defragmenting the Master File Table or MFT a computer can recover much of it's original speed. PerfectDisk http://www.raxco.com/products/perfectdisk2k/ has a 30 day free trial and can defrag the MFT and the paging file (swap space).

I keep Windows update turned on,and allow auto updates because it's safer that way. There's no doubt that MS screws up once in a while, and that hardware updates should be carefully examined, but I've found that most users would never update their systems at all otherwise. For most people,
