Think of the $1 as a marker, a simple place holder for whatever comes
in. The $1 isn't supposed to change but what the message is outputting
will change depending on what comes in.

libraries loaded by default. For this particular issue, you can get the

selector is needed, so Pd knows it is a list. This gets restated a lot
