  For starters:
  1. Put the download folder back (attached from archive.org from
  beginning of January).

  2. Don't make the first distribution in the list an alpha release of
library that has no stable release for download. (Better candidate
  would be Pd-ext or Vanilla.)

I'd like that too.

I thought also a generally less clustered site would be also friendly.

You have to search to even find the main forum of the program.

 Subject: [PD] Showcasing PD

 Hey Guys

Here's the situation, I've been invited to talk to a group of techies on PD
for half an hour this friday (the 3rd), there's basically two options.
Either I do a basic introduction to Pd, it's benefits and why I like it as a
medium/language. Or the one I'm leaning towards now, A quickly thrown
together example of something you can do in PD.

I'm currently thinking that I could easily put together a plan to code a
simple instrument from a USB controller within half an hour. Thus showing
that a lot can be achieved in a relatively short space of time with some Pd
 knowledge.

Has anyone got any ideas how I might try to impress people with the
 capabilities of PD?

 Cheers

 Andrew

Re: [PD] I'm on unix, I'm much better than windows users! (was Pd-extended 0.42.5 release candidate 6 released!)

2010-09-18 Thread George Ker
Well, let me be more clear. The last thing I wanted to be is offensive.

you advocate to stop maintaining Pd for windows

No I don't. I said clearly: So, my opinion is to just be more consentrated
on Mac/GNU-Linux support. . Because, I think more people participating in
Pd are in a different OS from windows.

By the way, I don't use IE7, I use Opera for 10 years now (which I
configured to acess my accounts and mails from both windows and ubuntu).

I see you more... agreeing with me for how people should treat the Win OS
(and MacOS of course) than you think.

And curiously, at the same time you said GNU-Linux is so great, you moved
out of it to Mac -
where you have to pay double the amount for the hardware, and the
manufacturer even goes to the trouble of making sure every laptop model
has a different electricity
cable, so that you have to spend more money you case you loose it.
...At least I don't call mac users a bunch of preformatted hipsters who
stand for hours in line to be the
first to buy whatever crap Jobs launches on the market.

Is this let the battle begin kind of paragraph?
I allready told that I UNFORTUNATELY moved to Mac because of it's support
for audio producing and left the strictly GNU-linux user side of me.
Everyone has his reasons using the OS he has installed, eventually.

I have a facebook account, which I use to see how other people are doing -
including some of the most advanced pd users present on this list, they post
more on it than I do.

Then you should add me. Nothing against Facebook using, I'm against
Farmville-like invitations.

One of the reasons I chose to run GNU-Linux on my previous setup (besides
the xp partition) are things you can have in it. And yes, PD was one of my
major reasons! I unfortunately had then to buy a Mac because of the
 support
 of audio applications generally.

Ok , most of people using a computer have Windows on their setup and in
countries like Greece ... you have to even use it in your university.
BUT: Do really people care about programs like PD or the
 ideology/democratic
openess behind GNU-Linux when they use windows? Most of us had the first
choice for our system of windows and we MOVED when we saw what we can and
 we
 cannot do in it.

So, my opinion is to just be more consentrated on Mac/GNU-Linux support.
There are not too many people who will really have the interest to learn
 Pd
in depth and then browsing with IE7 their Facebook accounts.

I honestly don't want to make Pd/Win users feel stupid.

No, but you just said something like pd is too valuable for windows, these
guys can't appreciate the beauty of it, and they just want to be fed
whatever the big bo$$ puts in their mouths, and advocate to stop
maintaining Pd for windows. And curiously, at the same time you said
GNU-Linux is so great, you moved out of it to Mac - where you have to pay
double the amount for the hardware, and the manufacturer even goes to the
trouble of making sure every laptop model has a different electricity cable,
so that you have to spend more money you case you loose it. And you're
worried about people not following ideology?

I'm a windows user, I don't know if I'm an advanced pd user (or what that
is), but I've been using pd only for several years, have done my
contributions to pd-ext (extra/jmmmp and donations in $), have patches for
people to download if they want to, taken and given Pd workshops, was
present in the Floss session, have worked on documentation, and partly
organise the pd berlin users meeting. So, I don't appreciate when people
judge windows users as idiots which don't know better, because I am one. At
least I don't call mac users a bunch of preformatted hipsters who stand for
hours in line to be the first to buy whatever crap Jobs launches on the
 market.

By the way, I don't use IE7, I use Opera for 10 years now (which I

If you want to advocate segregation go ahead, but be honest about it. After
all you use unix, you have the moral advantage (or you like to say you do).

Hi Hans,
I 'd really like to help because I found it interesting, but it was a really
hard thing for me. I felt like working - not just answering questions.
A lot of questions , were too hard to understand! They were auto-translated
to English - NOT by a human, did they?
( - Even as a passenger car driving beat with a nice strong sound more
joyful.
-Remember, when you one-vehicle noise is noticed last special? And why? )

Additionally , You couldn't find any sensible answer to some of them. For
example , what I'm supposed to answer in:
-What do you think generally about noises or sounds of cars?
-Let us assume that anything is possible! Can you imagine that electric cars
may sound differently than usual internal combustion engines? Why should I
mind?

In most of the survey's parts , I just felt what you were trying to ask.

Re: [PD] Anybody use google wave?

2009-11-30 Thread George Ker
When I got in the Wave, started following a Pure Data Users Google Wave I
found there public.

It really doesn't seem busy although I find it great as an idea.

Just out of curiosity, anybody here use google wave? I feel that this
platform is quite ideal for having real time conversation. So, if many
people on the Pd-list here use google wave, we can have some discussion and
 brainstorming on it :)

Re: [PD] call for translations for new Pd GUI

So, now's a good time to start contributing. Fix up the languages
that are there, or add more languages or even country-specific
versions of a language. Here are the files:
 http://pure-data.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/pure-data/branches/pd-devel/0.41.4/po/

Hello to all,
I'm a PD beginner living in Greece. I saw your call for translations
and was interested
in helping translating the app for the Greek language. I'm now a pd-list
member because of this call. So, I have allready translated
in Poedit and LocFactory Editor (as recommended)
all the template from SourceForge.
I have some problems that your guidance would be appreciated,
because it's my FIRST attempt in something like that.

-The first one is what I should do with PureData language specific
terms.
I recommend for terms like: Object, Atom Box, Symbol, Bang, Slider,
Patch etc that no Greek translation should be done. Yes, of course
I know what an Object means , and Atom Box could easily be
translated, but wouldn't it be a drawback for users? Even
for me, the translator of the app would be confusing if all
tutorials / help patches/ lists were using them... and then
I had to face with terms: Object, Slider, Patch, DSP
etc translated in Greek language in my installed App!
I asked a friend of mine and he wouldn't use the translated
app either! I find it like translating the MIDI acronyms.
Too ugly and scary...
As a conclusion, I left some terms as they are. I want
  your opinion.

-The second problem is that nowhere in Poedit is
mentioned my contribution :| . The only thing shown is
something about last translator in LocFactory Editor.
I don't mind about the licence but wouldn't it be right for
me to impress girls in my college more easily after
my work in translation of the PD app

-The third problem is: when I' m completely finished,
where I should upload the .po file and how?

-The last and more serious problem is that I can't
test my gr.po file. Everything needs to be done with
sudo to run and be installed properly and when I reach
the commands from your guide:
$ ./autogen.sh  .configure  make

there are some errors in the terminal:
rm: src/config*: No such file or directory
rm: src/makefile*: No such file or directory
./autogen.sh: line 13: libtoolize: command not found

I think no problems were in the gettext installation.
I' m on an intel Macbook Pro 2008, with MacOSX Leopard.

Thank you,

George Ker
