My old desktop PC died, where I had photoshop, scanning software, etc.
It was hardly able to keep up with photoshop, and it had a hard time
with the new fangled USB 2.0 card reader that I used to read my 8Gb
SDHC cards, the previous generation reader was ok, but could not read
the SDHC cards.

Should do OK, you'll take something of a speed hit due to the shared
VRAM, but it's probably comparable in performance overall to my system
with its older processor.
This is essentially what I have:
Only native raw or DNG files present color temperature in Kelvin
degrees and color temperature presets similar to the camera's WB
presets. If what you're looking at are TIFF, PSD or JPEG files, none
of that information is available to Lightroom.

Lightroom is a combination of a very good RAW converter (which also
works with JPEGs), and an image organiser. It does non-destructive
editing, but is mostly targeted at whole-image adjustments (exposure,
colour balance, sharpness, noise reduction, etc.,

Lightroom functions a lot like an old light tray of slides.
Library and Develop are my most used modules.
Library creates a directory of images you have imported.
