SMC coatings improved from the time they were introduced in 1976 or so but will still a multi coating, (and really Super). Supposedly the new HD coatings have more in common with the new nano coatings that Canon, Nikon, et. al. have introduced, otherwise Ricoh wouldn't have changed the SMC
