It doesn't matter any more. I have the
card and the camera has already taken
some incredibly good micrographs. But I
can say for sure that the *ist D I have
here -- serial number 5501200 -- will
not allow changes via the menu unless
there's a card in the slot.

I think the camera should work without a card. Well, at least allow you
to change settings and control it from the computer with the remote
assistant software. Your *ist-D may have a problem. For example, I've
never been able to get the OK button on my *ist-D to fire the flash, (I

When I don't have a card in the camera, the LCD screen constantlyreads No Card
in Camera. However, this does not prevent me fromchanging settings. I can
readily access the menu, change the F stopsetting in my custom menu, and then
hit the menu button again (twice)to exit the menu. This changes
PS I forgot to mention that I did upgrade the firmware of the istD
when I got it (2 years ago). Are they shipping the new istD cameras
with upgraded firmware now or do you still have to upgrade by
yourself? I really don't think the firmware could be causing this

I think you missed part of the thread. He had a card on order, and none
in it, his new-to-him camera! He didn't want to

Then just stick a 64 meg card in the slot. You can get one for peanuts. When I
use my camera with Remote Assistant, I have a card in the slot. It doesn't get
used; the camera writes to the computer hard drive, but all of the software is
happy.

Resetting menus in the istDS without a card inserted seems to work. I just
reset several menu items, turned the camera off and on, and the settings
held.

***L, then TIF and RAW.
